cdb6b0fdb0 Add PQfullProtocolVersion() to surface the precise protocol version.
The existing function PQprotocolVersion() does not include the minor
version of the protocol.  In preparation for pending work that will
bump that number for the first time, add a new function to provide it
to clients that may care, using the (major * 10000 + minor)
convention already used by PQserverVersion().

2e62fa62d6 Avoid core dump after getpwuid_r failure.
Looking up a nonexistent user ID would lead to a null pointer
dereference.  That's unlikely to happen here, but perhaps
not impossible.

fadff3fc94 Prevent mis-encoding of "trailing junk after numeric literal" errors.
Since commit 2549f0661, we reject an identifier immediately following
a numeric literal (without separating whitespace), because that risks
ambiguity with hex/octal/binary integers.  However, that patch used
token patterns like "{integer}{ident_start}", which is problematic
because {ident_start} matches only a single byte.  If the first
character after the integer is a multibyte character, this ends up
with flex reporting an error message that includes a partial multibyte
character.  That can cause assorted bad-encoding problems downstream,
both in the report to the client and in the postmaster log file.

To fix, use {identifier} not {ident_start} in the "junk" token
patterns, so that they will match complete multibyte characters.
This seems generally better user experience quite aside from the
encoding problem: for "123abc" the error message will now say that
the error appeared at or near "123abc" instead of "123a".

While at it, add some commentary about why these patterns exist
and how they work.

5735521ac2 Check availability of module injection_points in TAP tests
This fixes defects with installcheck for TAP tests that expect the
module injection_points to exist in an installation, but the contents of
src/test/modules are not installed by default with installcheck.  This
would cause, for example, failures under installcheck-world for a build
with injection points enabled, when the contents of src/test/modules/
are not installed.

The availability of the module can be done with a scan of
pg_available_extension.  This has been introduced in 2cdcae9da6, and
it is refactored here as a new routine in Cluster.pm.

Tests are changed in different ways depending on what they need:
- The libpq TAP test sets up a node even without injection points, so it
is enough to check that CREATE EXTENSION can be used.  There is no need
for the variable enable_injection_points.
- In test_misc, 006_signal_autovacuum requires a runtime check.
- 041_checkpoint_at_promote in recovery tests and 005_timeouts in
test_misc are updated to use the routine introduced in Cluster.pm.
- test_slru's 001_multixact, injection_points's 001_stats and
modules/gin/ do not require a check as these modules disable
installcheck entirely.

a70e01d430 Remove support for OpenSSL older than 1.1.0
OpenSSL 1.0.2 has been EOL from the upstream OpenSSL project for
some time, and is no longer the default OpenSSL version with any
vendor which package PostgreSQL. By retiring support for OpenSSL
1.0.2 we can remove a lot of no longer required complexity for
managing state within libcrypto which is now handled by OpenSSL.

4d5111b3f1 More use of getpwuid_r() directly
Remove src/port/user.c, call getpwuid_r() directly.  This reduces some
complexity and allows better control of the error behavior.  For
example, the old code would in some circumstances silently truncate
the result string, or produce error message strings that the caller
wouldn't use.

src/port/user.c used to be called src/port/thread.c and contained
various portability complications to support thread-safety.  These are
all obsolete, and all but the user-lookup functions have already been
removed.  This patch completes this by also removing the user-lookup
functions.

Also convert src/backend/libpq/auth.c to use getpwuid_r() for
thread-safety.

Originally, I tried to be overly correct by using
sysconf(_SC_GETPW_R_SIZE_MAX) to get the buffer size for getpwuid_r(),
but that doesn't work on FreeBSD.  All the OS where I could find the
source code internally use 1024 as the suggested buffer size, so I
just ended up hardcoding that.  The previous code used BUFSIZ, which
is an unrelated constant from stdio.h, so its use seemed
inappropriate.

ff59d5d2cf Provide feature-test macros for libpq features added in v17.
As per the policy established in commit 6991e774e, invent macros
that can be tested at compile time to detect presence of new libpq
features.  This should make calling code more readable and less
error-prone than checking the libpq version would be (especially
since we don't expose that at compile time; the server version is
an unreliable substitute).

a2bbc58f74 thread-safety: gmtime_r(), localtime_r()
Use gmtime_r() and localtime_r() instead of gmtime() and localtime(),
for thread-safety.

There are a few affected calls in libpq and ecpg's libpgtypes, which
are probably effectively bugs, because those libraries already claim
to be thread-safe.

There is one affected call in the backend.  Most of the backend
otherwise uses the custom functions pg_gmtime() and pg_localtime(),
which are implemented differently.

While we're here, change the call in the backend to gmtime*() instead
of localtime*(), since for that use time zone behavior is irrelevant,
and this side-steps any questions about when time zones are
initialized by localtime_r() vs localtime().

Portability: gmtime_r() and localtime_r() are in POSIX but are not
available on Windows.  Windows has functions gmtime_s() and
localtime_s() that can fulfill the same purpose, so we add some small
wrappers around them.  (Note that these *_s() functions are also
different from the *_s() functions in the bounds-checking extension of
C11.  We are not using those here.)

On MinGW, you can get the POSIX-style *_r() functions by defining
_POSIX_C_SOURCE appropriately before including <time.h>.  This leads
to a conflict at least in plpython because apparently _POSIX_C_SOURCE
gets defined in some header there, and then our replacement
definitions conflict with the system definitions.  To avoid that sort
of thing, we now always define _POSIX_C_SOURCE on MinGW and use the
POSIX-style functions here.

libpq: Trace all messages received from the server
Not all messages that libpq received from the server would be sent
through our message tracing logic.  This commit tries to fix that by
introducing a new function pqParseDone which make it harder to forget
about doing so.

The messages that we now newly send through our tracing logic are:

- CopyData (received by COPY TO STDOUT)
- Authentication requests
- NegotiateProtocolVersion
- Some ErrorResponse messages during connection startup
- ReadyForQuery when received after a FunctionCall message

e882bcae03 libpq: Fix minor TOCTOU violation
libpq checks the permissions of the password file before opening it.
The way this is done in two separate operations, a static analyzer
would flag as a time-of-check-time-of-use violation.  In practice, you
can't do anything with that, but it still seems better style to fix
it.

To fix it, open the file first and then check the permissions on the
opened file handle.

9e9a2b7031 Remove dependence on -fwrapv semantics in a few places.
This commit attempts to update a few places, such as the money,
numeric, and timestamp types, to no longer rely on signed integer
wrapping for correctness.  This is intended to move us closer
towards removing -fwrapv, which may enable some compiler
optimizations.  However, there is presently no plan to actually
remove that compiler option in the near future.

Besides using some of the existing overflow-aware routines in
int.h, this commit introduces and makes use of some new ones.
Specifically, it adds functions that accept a signed integer and
return its absolute value as an unsigned integer with the same
width (e.g., pg_abs_s64()).  It also adds functions that accept an
unsigned integer, store the result of negating that integer in a
signed integer with the same width, and return whether the negation
overflowed (e.g., pg_neg_u64_overflow()).

Finally, this commit adds a couple of tests for timestamps near
POSTGRES_EPOCH_JDATE.

97add39c03 Clean up indentation and whitespace inconsistencies in ecpg.
ecpg's lexer and parser files aren't normally processed by
pgindent, and unsurprisingly there's a lot of code in there
that doesn't really match project style.  I spent some time
running pgindent over the fragments of these files that are
C code, and this is the result.  This is in the same spirit
as commit 30ed71e42, though apparently Peter used a different
method for that one, since it didn't find these problems.

libpq: Trace responses to SSLRequest and GSSENCRequest
Since these are single bytes instead of v2 or v3 messages they need
custom tracing logic.  These "messages" don't even have official names
in the protocol specification, so I (Jelte) called them SSLResponse and
GSSENCResponse here.

f5a1311fcc Fix inappropriate uses of atol()
Some code using atol() would not work correctly if sizeof(long)==4:

- src/bin/pg_basebackup/pg_basebackup.c: Would miscount size of a
  tablespace over 2 TB.

- src/bin/pg_basebackup/streamutil.c: Would truncate a timeline ID
  beyond INT32_MAX.

- src/bin/pg_rewind/libpq_source.c: Would miscount size of files
  larger than 2 GB (but this currently cannot happen).

Replace these with atoll().

In one case, the use of atol() did not result in incorrect behavior
but seems inconsistent with related code:

- src/interfaces/ecpg/ecpglib/execute.c: Gratuitous, since it
  processes a value from pg_type.typlen, which is int16.

Replace this with atoi().

libpq: Trace StartupMessage/SSLRequest/GSSENCRequest correctly
libpq tracing via PQtrace would uselessly print the wrong thing for
these types of messages.  With this commit, their type and contents
would be correctly listed.  (This can be verified with PQconnectStart(),
but we don't use that in libpq_pipeline, so I (Álvaro) haven't bothered
to add any tests.)

libpq: Add suppress argument to pqTraceOutputNchar
In future commits we're going to trace authentication related messages.
Some of these messages contain challenge bytes as part of a
challenge-response flow.  Since these bytes are different for every
connection, we want to normalize them when the PQTRACE_REGRESS_MODE
trace flag is set.  This commit modifies pqTraceOutputNchar to take a
suppress argument, which makes it possible to do so.

5388216f6a Revert ECPG's use of pnstrdup()
Commit 0b9466fce added a dependency on fe_memutils' pnstrdup() inside
informix.c.  This adds an exit() path in a library, which we don't
want.  (Unlike libpq, the ecpg libraries don't have an automated check
for that, but it makes sense to keep them to a similar standard.)  The
ecpg code can already handle failure results from the *strdup() call
by itself.

6618891256 Add -Wmissing-variable-declarations to the standard compilation flags
This warning flag detects global variables not declared in header
files.  This is similar to what -Wmissing-prototypes does for
functions.  (More correctly, it is similar to what
-Wmissing-declarations does for functions, but -Wmissing-prototypes is
a superset of that in C.)

This flag is new in GCC 14.  Clang has supported it for a while.

Several recent commits have cleaned up warnings triggered by this, so
it should now be clean.

9fb855fe1a Include bison header files into implementation files
Before Bison 3.4, the generated parser implementation files run afoul
of -Wmissing-variable-declarations (in spite of commit ab61c40bfa)
because declarations for yylval and possibly yylloc are missing.  The
generated header files contain an extern declaration, but the
implementation files don't include the header files.  Since Bison 3.4,
the generated implementation files automatically include the generated
header files, so then it works.

To make this work with older Bison versions as well, include the
generated header file from the .y file.

(With older Bison versions, the generated implementation file contains
effectively a copy of the header file pasted in, so including the
header file is redundant.  But we know this works anyway because the
core grammar uses this arrangement already.)

1e666fd7c6 libpq: Use strerror_r instead of strerror
Commit 453c468737 introduced a use of strerror() into libpq, but that
is not thread-safe.  Fix by using strerror_r() instead.

In passing, update some of the code comments added by 453c468737, as
we have learned more about the reason for the change in OpenSSL that
started this.

20e0e7da9b Add test for early backend startup errors
The new test tests the libpq fallback behavior on an early error,
which was fixed in the previous commit.

This adds an IS_INJECTION_POINT_ATTACHED() macro, to allow writing
injected test code alongside the normal source code. In principle, the
new test could've been implemented by an extra test module with a
callback that sets the FrontendProtocol global variable, but I think
it's more clear to have the test code right where the injection point
is, because it has pretty intimate knowledge of the surrounding
context it runs in.

c95d2159c1 Fix fallback behavior when server sends an ERROR early at startup
With sslmode=prefer, the desired behavior is to completely fail the
connection attempt, *not* fall back to a plaintext connection, if the
server responds to the SSLRequest with an error ('E') response instead
of rejecting SSL with an 'N' response. This was broken in commit
05fd30c0e7.

ab61c40bfa Add extern declarations for Bison global variables
This adds extern declarations for some global variables produced by
Bison that are not already declared in its generated header file.
This is a workaround to be able to add -Wmissing-variable-declarations
to the global set of warning options in the near future.

Another longer-term solution would be to convert these grammars to
"pure" parsers in Bison, to avoid global variables altogether.  Note
that the core grammar is already pure, so this patch did not need to
touch it.

d35cd06199 Fix overflow in parsing of positional parameter
Replace atol with pg_strtoint32_safe in the backend parser and with
strtoint in ECPG to reject overflows when parsing the number of a
positional parameter.  With atol from glibc, parameters $2147483648 and
$4294967297 turn into $-2147483648 and $1, respectively.

When an OOM occurred, this function was incorrectly setting a status of
CONNECTION_BAD on the passed in PGconn instead of on the newly created
PGcancelConn.

105024a472 Improve the granularity of PQsocketPoll's timeout parameter.
Commit f5e4dedfa exposed libpq's internal function PQsocketPoll
without a lot of thought about whether that was an API we really
wanted to chisel in stone.  The main problem with it is the use of
time_t to specify the timeout.  While we do want an absolute time
so that a loop around PQsocketPoll doesn't have problems with
timeout slippage, time_t has only 1-second resolution.  That's
already problematic for libpq's own internal usage --- for example,
pqConnectDBComplete has long had a kluge to treat "connect_timeout=1"
as 2 seconds so that it doesn't accidentally round to nearly zero.
And it's even less likely to be satisfactory for external callers.
Hence, let's change this while we still can.

The best idea seems to be to use an int64 count of microseconds since
the epoch --- basically the same thing as the backend's TimestampTz,
but let's use the standard Unix epoch (1970-01-01) since that's more
likely for clients to be easy to calculate.  Millisecond resolution
would be plenty for foreseeable uses, but maybe the day will come that
we're glad we used microseconds.

Also, since time(2) isn't especially helpful for computing timeouts
defined this way, introduce a new function PQgetCurrentTimeUSec
to get the current time in this form.

Remove the hack in pqConnectDBComplete, so that "connect_timeout=1"
now means what you'd expect.

We can also remove the "#include <time.h>" that f5e4dedfa added to
libpq-fe.h, since there's no longer a need for time_t in that header.
It seems better for v17 not to enlarge libpq-fe.h's include footprint
from what it's historically been, anyway.

I also failed to resist the temptation to do some wordsmithing
on PQsocketPoll's documentation.

a0fe90efef libpq: Add missing gettext markers
Follow-up to 87d2801d4b: That commit restored some lost error
messages, but they ended up in a place where xgettext wouldn't find
them.  Rather than elevating ENCRYPTION_NEGOTIATION_FAILED() to a
gettext trigger, it's easiest for now to put in some explicit
libpq_gettext() calls in the couple of call sites.

d112ea4681 libpq: Remove a gettext marker
This one error message is just a workaround for a missing OpenSSL
error string.  But OpenSSL does not have gettext support, so we don't
need to provide it in our workaround either.  That way, the
user-facing behavior is consistent whether the user has a fixed
OpenSSL or not.

cd2624fd97 Fix PL/pgSQL's handling of integer ranges containing underscores.
Commit faff8f8e47 allowed integer literals to contain underscores, but
failed to update the lexer's "numericfail" rule. As a result, a
decimal integer literal containing underscores would fail to parse, if
used in an integer range with no whitespace after the first number,
such as "1_001..1_003" in a PL/pgSQL FOR loop.

Fix and backpatch to v16, where support for underscores in integer
literals was added.

0162a9bde2 Remove race conditions between ECPGdebug() and ecpg_log().
Coverity complains that ECPGdebug is accessing debugstream without
holding debug_mutex, which is a fair complaint: we should take
debug_mutex while changing the settings ecpg_log looks at.

In some branches it also complains about unlocked use of simple_debug.
I think it's intentional and safe to have a quick unlocked check of
simple_debug at the start of ecpg_log, since that early exit will
always be taken in non-debug cases.  But we should recheck
simple_debug after acquiring the mutex.  In the worst case, calling
ECPGdebug concurrently with ecpg_log in another thread could result
in a null-pointer dereference due to debugstream transiently being
NULL while simple_debug isn't 0.

This is largely hypothetical, since it's unlikely anybody uses
ECPGdebug() at all in the field, and our own regression tests
don't seem to be hitting the theoretical race conditions either.
Still, if we're going to the trouble of having mutexes here, we ought
to be using them in a way that's actually safe not just almost safe.
Hence, back-patch to all supported branches.

17974ec259 Revise GUC names quoting in messages again
After further review, we want to move in the direction of always
quoting GUC names in error messages, rather than the previous (PG16)
wildly mixed practice or the intermittent (mid-PG17) idea of doing
this depending on how possibly confusing the GUC name is.

This commit applies appropriate quotes to (almost?) all mentions of
GUC names in error messages.  It partially supersedes a243569bf6 and
8d9978a717, which had moved things a bit in the opposite direction
but which then were abandoned in a partial state.

fb5718f35f Remove option to fall back from direct to postgres SSL negotiation
There were three problems with the sslnegotiation options:

1. The sslmode=prefer and sslnegotiation=requiredirect combination was
somewhat dangerous, as you might unintentionally fall back to
plaintext authentication when connecting to a pre-v17 server.

2. There was an asymmetry between 'postgres' and 'direct'
options. 'postgres' meant "try only traditional negotiation", while
'direct' meant "try direct first, and fall back to traditional
negotiation if it fails". That was apparent only if you knew that the
'requiredirect' mode also exists.

3. The "require" word in 'requiredirect' suggests that it's somehow
more strict or more secure, similar to sslmode. However, I don't
consider direct SSL connections to be a security feature.

To address these problems:

- Only allow sslnegotiation='direct' if sslmode='require' or
stronger. And for the record, Jacob and Robert felt that we should do
that (or have sslnegotiation='direct' imply sslmode='require') anyway,
regardless of the first issue.

- Remove the 'direct' mode that falls back to traditional negotiation,
and rename what was called 'requiredirect' to 'direct' instead. In
other words, there is no "try both methods" option anymore, 'postgres'
now means the traditional negotiation and 'direct' means a direct SSL
connection.

98b4f53d15 Re-forbid underscore in positional parameters
Underscores were added to numeric literals in faff8f8e47.  This change
also affected the positional parameters (e.g., $1) rule, which uses
the same production for its digits.  But this did not actually work,
because the digits for parameters are processed using atol(), which
does not handle underscores and ignores whatever it cannot parse.

The underscores notation is probably not useful for positional
parameters, so for simplicity revert that rule to its old form that
only accepts digits 0-9.

da256a4a7f Pre-beta mechanical code beautification.
Run pgindent, pgperltidy, and reformat-dat-files.

The pgindent part of this is pretty small, consisting mainly of
fixing up self-inflicted formatting damage from patches that
hadn't bothered to add their new typedefs to typedefs.list.
In order to keep it from making anything worse, I manually added
a dozen or so typedefs that appeared in the existing typedefs.list
but not in the buildfarm's list.  Perhaps we should formalize that,
or better find a way to get those typedefs into the automatic list.

pgperltidy is as opinionated as always, and reformat-dat-files too.

42510c031b Rename libpq trace internal functions
libpq's pqTraceOutputMessage() used to look like this:

Commit f4b54e1ed9 introduced macros for protocol characters, so now
it looks like this:

    case PqMsg_ReadyForQuery:
        pqTraceOutputZ(conn->Pfdebug, message, &logCursor);
        break;

But this introduced a disconnect between the symbol in the switch case
and the function name to be called, so this made the manageability of
this file a bit worse.

This patch changes the function names to match, so now it looks like
this:

    case PqMsg_ReadyForQuery:
        pqTraceOutput_ReadyForQuery(conn->Pfdebug, message, &logCursor);
        break;

(This also improves the readability of the file in general, since some
function names like "pqTraceOutputt" were a little hard to read
accurately.)

Some protocol characters have different meanings to and from the
server.  The old code structure had a common function for both, for
example, pqTraceOutputD().  The new structure splits this up into
separate ones to match the protocol message name, like
pqTraceOutput_Describe() and pqTraceOutput_DataRow().

17a834a04d Reject SSL connection if ALPN is used but there's no common protocol
If the client supports ALPN but tries to use some other protocol, like
HTTPS, reject the connection in the server. That is surely a confusion
of some sort. Furthermore, the ALPN RFC 7301 says:

> In the event that the server supports no protocols that the client
> advertises, then the server SHALL respond with a fatal
> "no_application_protocol" alert.

This commit makes the server follow that advice.

In the client, specifically check for the OpenSSL error code for the
"no_application_protocol" alert. Otherwise you got a cryptic "SSL
error: SSL error code 167773280" error if you tried to connect to a
non-PostgreSQL server that rejects the connection with
"no_application_protocol". ERR_reason_error_string() returns NULL for
that code, which frankly seems like an OpenSSL bug to me, but we can
easily print a better message ourselves.

87d2801d4b libpq: Fix error messages when server rejects SSL or GSS
These messages were lost in commit 05fd30c0e7. Put them back.

This makes one change in the error message behavior compared to v16,
in the case that the server responds to GSSRequest with an error
instead of rejecting it with 'N'. Previously, libpq would hide the
error that the server sent, assuming that you got the error because
the server is an old pre-v12 version that doesn't understand the
GSSRequest message. A v11 server sends a "FATAL: unsupported frontend
protocol 1234.5680: server supports 2.0 to 3.0" error if you try to
connect to it with GSS. That was a reasonable assumption when the
feature was introduced, but v12 was released a long time ago and I
don't think it's the most probable cause anymore. The attached patch
changes things so that libpq prints the error message that the server
sent in that case, making the "server responds with error to
GSSRequest" case behave the same as the "server responds with error to
SSLRequest" case.

7e61e4cc7c Make two-phase tests of ECPG and main suite more concurrent-proof
The ECPG and main 2PC tests have been using rather-generic names for the
prepared transactions they generate.  This commit switches the 2PC
transactions to use more complex GIDs, reducing the risk of naming
conflicts.

The main 2PC tests also include scans of pg_prepared_xacts that do not
apply filters on the GID of the prepared transactions, making it
possible to fail the test when any 2PC transaction runs concurrently.
The CI has been able to see such failures with an installcheck
running the ECPG and the main regression test suites in parallel.  The
queries on pg_prepared_xacts gain quals to only look after the GIDs
generated locally.

The race is very hard to reproduce, so no backbatch is done for now.

The paragraph in the docs and the comment applied to
sslnegotiaton=direct, but not sslnegotiation=requiredirect. In
'requiredirect' mode, negotiated SSL is never used. Move the paragraph
in the docs under the description of 'direct' mode, and rephrase it.

Also the comment's reference to reusing a plaintext connection was
bogus. Authentication failure in plaintext mode only happens after
sending the startup packet, so the connection cannot be reused.

c3fa85b249 Remove obsolete symbol from ecpg_config.h.in
HAVE_LONG_LONG_INT was not added to ecpg_config.h.in by the meson
build system, but rather than add it there, we decided to remove it
from the makefile build system, to make both consistent that way.

There is no documentation or examples that suggest that the presence
of this symbol was publicly advertised, and of course the feature is
required by C99 (but we don't necessarily require C99 for ecpg user
code).  ecpg core code and ecpg tests use the symbol
HAVE_LONG_LONG_INT_64 instead, which is still there.

6f0cef9353 Fix assorted bugs in ecpg's macro mechanism.
The code associated with EXEC SQL DEFINE was unreadable and full of
bugs, notably:

* It'd attempt to free a non-malloced string if the ecpg program
tries to redefine a macro that was defined on the command line.

* Possible memory stomp if user writes "-D=foo".

* Undef'ing or redefining a macro defined on the command line would
change the state visible to the next file, when multiple files are
specified on the command line.  (While possibly that could have been
an intentional choice, the code clearly intends to revert to the
original macro state; it's just failing to consider this interaction.)

* Missing "break" in defining a new macro meant that redefinition
of an existing name would cause an extra entry to be added to the
definition list.  While not immediately harmful, a subsequent undef
would result in the prior entry becoming visible again.

* The interactions with input buffering are subtle and were entirely
undocumented.

It's not that surprising that we hadn't noticed these bugs,
because there was no test coverage at all of either the -D
command line switch or multiple input files.  This patch adds
such coverage (in a rather hacky way I guess).

In addition to the code bugs, the user documentation was confused
about whether the -D switch defines a C macro or an ecpg one, and
it failed to mention that you can write "-Dsymbol=value".

These problems are old, so back-patch to all supported branches.

d21d61b96f Put back initialization of 'sslmode', to silence Coverity
Coverity pointed out that the function checks for conn->sslmode !=
NULL, which implies that it might be NULL, but later we access it
without a NULL-check anyway. It doesn't know that it is in fact always
initialized earlier, in conninfo_add_defaults(), and hence the
NULL-check is not necessary. However, there is a lot of distance
between conninfo_add_defaults() and pqConnectOptions2(), so it's not
surprising that it doesn't see that. Put back the initialization code,
as it existed before commit 05fd30c0e7, to silence the warning.

In the long run, I'd like to refactor the libpq options handling and
initalization code. It seems silly to strdup() and copy strings, for
things like sslmode that have a limited set of possible values; it
should be an enum. But that's for another day.

4cc1c76fe9 Document PG_TEST_EXTRA=libpq_encryption and also check 'kerberos'
In the libpq encryption negotiation tests, don't run the GSSAPI tests
unless PG_TEST_EXTRA='kerberos' is also set. That makes it possible to
still run most of the tests when GSSAPI support is compiled in, but
there's no MIT Kerberos installation.

bb766cde63 JSON_TABLE: Add support for NESTED paths and columns
A NESTED path allows to extract data from nested levels of JSON
objects given by the parent path expression, which are projected as
columns specified using a nested COLUMNS clause, just like the parent
COLUMNS clause.  Rows comprised from a NESTED columns are "joined"
to the row comprised from the parent columns.  If a particular NESTED
path evaluates to 0 rows, then the nested COLUMNS will emit NULLs,
making it an OUTER join.

NESTED columns themselves may include NESTED paths to allow
extracting data from arbitrary nesting levels, which are likewise
joined against the rows at the parent level.

Multiple NESTED paths at a given level are called "sibling" paths
and their rows are combined by UNIONing them, that is, after being
joined against the parent row as described above.

91044ae4ba Send ALPN in TLS handshake, require it in direct SSL connections
libpq now always tries to send ALPN. With the traditional negotiated
SSL connections, the server accepts the ALPN, and refuses the
connection if it's not what we expect, but connecting without ALPN is
still OK. With the new direct SSL connections, ALPN is mandatory.

NOTE: This uses "TBD-pgsql" as the protocol ID. We must register a

d39a49c1e4 Support TLS handshake directly without SSLRequest negotiation
By skipping SSLRequest, you can eliminate one round-trip when
establishing a TLS connection. It is also more friendly to generic TLS
proxies that don't understand the PostgreSQL protocol.

This is disabled by default in libpq, because the direct TLS handshake
will fail with old server versions. It can be enabled with the
sslnegotation=direct option. It will still fall back to the negotiated
TLS handshake if the server rejects the direct attempt, either because
it is an older version or the server doesn't support TLS at all, but
the fallback can be disabled with the sslnegotiation=requiredirect
option.

20f9b61cc1 With gssencmode='require', check credential cache before connecting
Previously, libpq would establish the TCP connection, and then
immediately disconnect if the credentials were not available.  The
same thing happened if you tried to use a Unix domain socket with
gssencmode=require. Check those conditions before establishing the TCP
connection.

This is a very minor issue, but my motivation to do this now is that
I'm about to add more detail to the tests for encryption negotiation.
This makes the case of gssencmode=require but no credentials
configured fail at the same stage as with gssencmode=require and
GSSAPI support not compiled at all. That avoids having to deal with
variations in expected output depending on build options.

4643a2b265 Support retrieval of results in chunks with libpq.
This patch generalizes libpq's existing single-row mode to allow
individual partial-result PGresults to contain up to N rows, rather
than always one row.  This reduces malloc overhead compared to plain
single-row mode, and it is very useful for psql's FETCH_COUNT feature,
since otherwise we'd have to add code (and cycles) to either merge
single-row PGresults into a bigger one or teach psql's
results-printing logic to accept arrays of PGresults.

To avoid API breakage, PQsetSingleRowMode() remains the same, and we
add a new function PQsetChunkedRowsMode() to invoke the more general
case.  Also, PGresults obtained the old way continue to carry the
PGRES_SINGLE_TUPLE status code, while if PQsetChunkedRowsMode() is
used then their status code is PGRES_TUPLES_CHUNK.  The underlying
logic is the same either way, though.

096a761d68 Fix ecpg's mechanism for detecting unsupported cases in the grammar.
ecpg wants to emit a warning if it parses a SQL construct that the
backend can parse but will immediately throw a FEATURE_NOT_SUPPORTED
error for.  The way it was testing for this was to see if the string
ERRCODE_FEATURE_NOT_SUPPORTED appeared anywhere in the gram.y code.
This is, of course, not nearly good enough, as there are plenty of
rules in gram.y that throw that error only conditionally.  There was
a hack dating to 2008 to suppress the warning in one rule that
doesn't even exist anymore, but nothing for other cases we've created
since then.  End result was that you could get "unsupported feature
will be passed to server" warnings while compiling perfectly good SQL
code in ecpg.  Somehow we'd not heard complaints about this, but
it was exposed by the recent addition of an ecpg test for a SQL/JSON
construct.

To fix, suppress the warning if the rule contains any "if" statement.
Manual comparison of gram.y with the generated preproc.y file shows
that the warning is now emitted only in rules where it's sensible.

This problem has existed for a long time, so back-patch to all
supported branches.

de3600452b Add basic JSON_TABLE() functionality
JSON_TABLE() allows JSON data to be converted into a relational view
and thus used, for example, in a FROM clause, like other tabular
data.  Data to show in the view is selected from a source JSON object
using a JSON path expression to get a sequence of JSON objects that's
called a "row pattern", which becomes the source to compute the
SQL/JSON values that populate the view's output columns.  Column
values themselves are computed using JSON path expressions applied to
each of the JSON objects comprising the "row pattern", for which the
SQL/JSON query functions added in 6185c9737c are used.

To implement JSON_TABLE() as a table function, this augments the
TableFunc and TableFuncScanState nodes that are currently used to
support XMLTABLE() with some JSON_TABLE()-specific fields.

Note that the JSON_TABLE() spec includes NESTED COLUMNS and PLAN
clauses, which are required to provide more flexibility to extract
data out of nested JSON objects, but they are not implemented here
to keep this commit of manageable size.

3622c80846 Avoid "unused variable" warning on non-USE_SSL_ENGINE platforms.
If we are building with openssl but USE_SSL_ENGINE didn't get set,
initialize_SSL's variable "pkey" is declared but used nowhere.
Apparently this combination hasn't been exercised in the buildfarm
before now, because I've not seen this warning before, even though
the code has been like this a long time.  Move the declaration
to silence the warning (and remove its useless initialization).

adcdb2c8dd Explicitly require password for SCRAM exchange
This refactors the SASL init flow to set password_needed on the two
SCRAM exchanges currently supported. The code already required this
but was set up in such a way that all SASL exchanges required using
a password, a restriction which may not hold for all exchanges (the
example at hand being the proposed OAuthbearer exchange).

This was extracted from a larger patchset to introduce OAuthBearer
authentication and authorization.

24178e235e Refactor SASL exchange to return tri-state status
The SASL exchange callback returned state in to output variables:
done and success.  This refactors that logic by introducing a new
return variable of type SASLStatus which makes the code easier to
read and understand, and prepares for future SASL exchanges which
operate asynchronously.

6185c9737c Add SQL/JSON query functions
This introduces the following SQL/JSON functions for querying JSON
data using jsonpath expressions:

JSON_EXISTS(), which can be used to apply a jsonpath expression to a
JSON value to check if it yields any values.

JSON_QUERY(), which can be used to to apply a jsonpath expression to
a JSON value to get a JSON object, an array, or a string.  There are
various options to control whether multi-value result uses array
wrappers and whether the singleton scalar strings are quoted or not.

JSON_VALUE(), which can be used to apply a jsonpath expression to a
JSON value to return a single scalar value, producing an error if it
multiple values are matched.

Both JSON_VALUE() and JSON_QUERY() functions have options for
handling EMPTY and ERROR conditions, which can be used to specify
the behavior when no values are matched and when an error occurs
during jsonpath evaluation, respectively.

libpq: Add encrypted and non-blocking query cancellation routines
The existing PQcancel API uses blocking IO, which makes PQcancel
impossible to use in an event loop based codebase without blocking the
event loop until the call returns.  It also doesn't encrypt the
connection over which the cancel request is sent, even when the original
connection required encryption.

This commit adds a PQcancelConn struct and assorted functions, which
provide a better mechanism of sending cancel requests; in particular all
the encryption used in the original connection are also used in the
cancel connection.  The main entry points are:

- PQcancelCreate creates the PQcancelConn based on the original
  connection (but does not establish an actual connection).
- PQcancelStart can be used to initiate non-blocking cancel requests,
  using encryption if the original connection did so, which must be
  pumped using
- PQcancelPoll.
- PQcancelReset puts a PQcancelConn back in state so that it can be
  reused to send a new cancel request to the same connection.
- PQcancelBlocking is a simpler-to-use blocking API that still uses
  encryption.

Additional functions are
 - PQcancelStatus, mimicks PQstatus;
 - PQcancelSocket, mimicks PQcancelSocket;
 - PQcancelErrorMessage, mimicks PQerrorMessage;
 - PQcancelFinish, mimicks PQfinish.

2c8118ee5d Use printf's %m format instead of strerror(errno) in more places
Most callers of strerror() are removed from the backend code.  The
remaining callers require special handling with a saved errno from a
previous system call.  The frontend code still needs strerror() where
error states need to be handled outside of fprintf.

Note that pg_regress is not changed to use %m as the TAP output may
clobber errno, since those functions call fprintf() and friends before
evaluating the format string.

Support for %m in src/port/snprintf.c has been added in d6c55de1f9,
hence all the stable branches currently supported include it.

Add missing connection statuses to docs
The list of connection statuses that PQstatus might return during an
asynchronous connection attempt was outdated:

1. CONNECTION_SETENV is never returned anymore and is only part of the
   enum for backwards compatibility, so remove it from the docs.
2. CONNECTION_CHECK_STANDBY and CONNECTION_GSS_STARTUP were not listed,
   so add them.

CONNECTION_NEEDED and CONNECTION_CHECK_TARGET are not listed in the docs
on purpose, since these are internal states that can never be observed
by a caller of PQstatus.

453c468737 Cope with a deficiency in OpenSSL 3.x's error reporting.
In OpenSSL 3.0.0 and later, ERR_reason_error_string randomly refuses
to provide a string for error codes representing system errno values
(e.g., "No such file or directory").  There is a poorly-documented way
to extract the errno from the SSL error code in this case, so do that
and apply strerror, rather than falling back to reporting the error
code's numeric value as we were previously doing.

Problem reported by David Zhang, although this is not his proposed
patch; it's instead based on a suggestion from Heikki Linnakangas.
Back-patch to all supported branches, since any of them are likely
to be used with recent OpenSSL.

0b16bb8776 Remove AIX support
There isn't a lot of user demand for AIX support, we have a bunch of
hacks to work around AIX-specific compiler bugs and idiosyncrasies,
and no one has stepped up to the plate to properly maintain it.
Remove support for AIX to get rid of that maintenance overhead. It's
still supported for stable versions.

The acute issue that triggered this decision was that after commit
8af2565248, the AIX buildfarm members have been hitting this
assertion:

    TRAP: failed Assert("(uintptr_t) buffer == TYPEALIGN(PG_IO_ALIGN_SIZE, buffer)"), File: "md.c", Line: 472, PID: 2949728

Apperently the "pg_attribute_aligned(a)" attribute doesn't work on AIX
for values larger than PG_IO_ALIGN_SIZE, for a static const variable.
That could be worked around, but we decided to just drop the AIX support
instead.

e77a1c58e3 ecpg: Fix zero-termination of string generated by intoasc()
intoasc(), a wrapper for PGTYPESinterval_to_asc that converts an
interval to its textual representation, used a plain memcpy() when
copying its result.  This could miss a zero-termination in the result
string, leading to an incorrect result.

The routines in informix.c do not provide the length of their result
buffer, which would allow a replacement of strcpy() to safer strlcpy()
calls, but this requires an ABI breakage and that cannot happen in
back-branches.

pgtypes_alloc() can return NULL when failing an allocation, which is
something that PGTYPEStimestamp_defmt_asc() has forgotten about when
translating a timestamp for 'D', 'r', 'R' and 'T' as these require a
temporary allocation.

This is unlikely going to be a problem in practice, so no backpatch is
done.

a584d03ced Avoid concurrent calls to bindtextdomain().
We previously supposed that it was okay for different threads to
call bindtextdomain() concurrently (cf. commit 1f655fdc3).
It now emerges that there's at least one gettext implementation
in which that triggers an abort() crash, so let's stop doing that.
Add mutexes guarding libpq's and ecpglib's calls, which are the
only ones that need worry about multithreaded callers.

Note: in libpq, we could perhaps have piggybacked on
default_threadlock() to avoid defining a new mutex variable.
I judge that not terribly safe though, since libpq_gettext could
be called from code that is holding the default mutex.  If that
were the first such call in the process, it'd fail.  An extra
mutex is cheap insurance against unforeseen interactions.

Per bug #18312 from Christian Maurer.  Back-patch to all
supported versions.

0028b55bc8 Clean up Windows-specific mutex code in libpq and ecpglib.
Fix pthread-win32.h and pthread-win32.c to provide a more complete
emulation of POSIX pthread mutexes: define PTHREAD_MUTEX_INITIALIZER
and make sure that pthread_mutex_lock() can operate on a mutex
object that's been initialized that way.  Then we don't need the
duplicative platform-specific logic in default_threadlock() and
pgtls_init(), which we'd otherwise need yet a third copy of for
an upcoming bug fix.

Also, since default_threadlock() supposes that pthread_mutex_lock()
cannot fail, try to ensure that that's actually true, by getting
rid of the malloc call that was formerly involved in initializing
an emulated mutex.  We can define an extra state for the spinlock
field instead.

Also, replace the similar code in ecpglib/misc.c with this version.
While ecpglib's version at least had a POSIX-compliant API, it
also had the potential of failing during mutex init (but here,
because of CreateMutex failure rather than malloc failure).  Since
all of misc.c's callers ignore failures, it seems like a wise idea
to avoid failures here too.

A further improvement in this area could be to unify libpq's and
ecpglib's implementations into a src/port/pthread-win32.c file.
But that doesn't seem like a bug fix, so I'll desist for now.

In preparation for the aforementioned bug fix, back-patch to all
supported branches.

936f569887 Exclude Threadsanitizer instrumentation in exit check
When building libpq there is a check to ensure that we're not
linking against code that calls exit(). This check is using a
heuristic grep with exclusions for known false positives. The
Threadsanitizer library instrumentation for function exits is
named such that it triggers the check, so add an exclusion.

This fix is only applied to the Makefile since the meson build
files don't yet have this check.  Adding the check to meson is
outside the scope of this patch though.

libpq: Move cancellation related functions to fe-cancel.c
In follow up commits we'll add more functions related to query
cancellations.  This groups those all together instead of mixing them
with the other functions in fe-connect.c.

The formerly static parse_int_param() function had to be exported to
other libpq users, so it's been renamed pqParseIntParam() and moved to a
more reasonable place within fe-connect.c (rather than randomly between
various keepalive-related routines).

Don't test already-referenced pointer for nullness
Commit b8ba7344e9 added in PQgetResult a derefence to a pointer
returned by pqPrepareAsyncResult(), before some other code that was
already testing that pointer for nullness.  But since commit
618c16707a (in Postgres 15), pqPrepareAsyncResult() doesn't ever
return NULL (a statically-allocated result is returned if OOM).  So in
branches 15 and up, we can remove the redundant pointer check with no
harm done.

However, in branch 14, pqPrepareAsyncResult() can indeed return NULL if
it runs out of memory.  Fix things there by adding a null pointer check
before dereferencing the pointer.  This should hint Coverity that the
preexisting check is not redundant but necessary.

Backpatch to 14, like b8ba7344e9.

4794c2d317 libpq: Add PQsendPipelineSync()
This new function is equivalent to PQpipelineSync(), except that it does
not flush anything to the server except if the size threshold of the
output buffer is reached; the user must subsequently call PQflush()
instead.

Its purpose is to reduce the system call overhead of pipeline mode, by
giving to applications more control over the timing of the flushes when
manipulating commands in pipeline mode.

a7be2a6c26 Add new function, PQchangePassword(), to libpq
Essentially this moves the non-interactive part of psql's "\password"
command into an exported client function. The password is not sent to the
server in cleartext because it is "encrypted" (in the case of scram and md5
it is actually hashed, but we have called these encrypted passwords for a
long time now) on the client side. This is good because it ensures the
cleartext password is never known by the server, and therefore won't end up
in logs, pg_stat displays, etc.

In other words, it exists for the same reason as PQencryptPasswordConn(), but
is more convenient as it both builds and runs the "ALTER USER" command for
you. PQchangePassword() uses PQencryptPasswordConn() to do the password
encryption. PQencryptPasswordConn() is passed a NULL for the algorithm
argument, hence encryption is done according to the server's
password_encryption setting.

Also modify the psql client to use the new function. That provides a builtin
test case. Ultimately drivers built on top of libpq should expose this
function and its use should be generally encouraged over doing ALTER USER
directly for password changes.

c538592959 Make all Perl warnings fatal
There are a lot of Perl scripts in the tree, mostly code generation
and TAP tests.  Occasionally, these scripts produce warnings.  These
are probably always mistakes on the developer side (true positives).
Typical examples are warnings from genbki.pl or related when you make
a mess in the catalog files during development, or warnings from tests
when they massage a config file that looks different on different
hosts, or mistakes during merges (e.g., duplicate subroutine
definitions), or just mistakes that weren't noticed because there is a
lot of output in a verbose build.

This changes all warnings into fatal errors, by replacing

    use warnings;

by

    use warnings FATAL => 'all';

in all Perl files.

1301c80b21 Remove MSVC scripts
This commit removes all the scripts located in src/tools/msvc/ to build
PostgreSQL with Visual Studio on Windows, meson becoming the recommended
way to achieve that.  The scripts held some information that is still
relevant with meson, information kept and moved to better locations.
Comments that referred directly to the scripts are removed.

All the documentation still relevant that was in install-windows.sgml
has been moved to installation.sgml under a new subsection for Visual.
All the content specific to the scripts is removed.  Some adjustments
for the documentation are planned in a follow-up set of changes.

0a5c46a7a4 Be more wary about OpenSSL not setting errno on error.
OpenSSL will sometimes return SSL_ERROR_SYSCALL without having set
errno; this is apparently a reflection of recv(2)'s habit of not
setting errno when reporting EOF.  Ensure that we treat such cases
the same as read EOF.  Previously, we'd frequently report them like
"could not accept SSL connection: Success" which is confusing, or
worse report them with an unrelated errno left over from some
previous syscall.

To fix, ensure that errno is zeroed immediately before the call,
and report its value only when it's not zero afterwards; otherwise
report EOF.

For consistency, I've applied the same coding pattern in libpq's
pqsecure_raw_read().  Bare recv(2) shouldn't really return -1 without
setting errno, but in case it does we might as well cope.

Fix handling of errors in libpq pipelines
The logic to keep the libpq command queue in sync with queries that have
been processed had a bug when errors were returned for reasons other
than problems in queries -- for example, when a connection is lost.  We
incorrectly consumed an element from the command queue every time, but
this is wrong and can lead to the queue becoming empty ahead of time,
leading to later malfunction: PQgetResult would return nothing,
potentially causing the calling application to enter a busy loop.

Fix by making the SYNC queue element a barrier that can only be consumed
when a SYNC message is received.

Backpatch to 14.

c82207a548 Use BIO_{get,set}_app_data instead of BIO_{get,set}_data.
We should have done it this way all along, but we accidentally got
away with using the wrong BIO field up until OpenSSL 3.2.  There,
the library's BIO routines that we rely on use the "data" field
for their own purposes, and our conflicting use causes assorted
weird behaviors up to and including core dumps when SSL connections
are attempted.  Switch to using the approved field for the purpose,
i.e. app_data.

While at it, remove our configure probes for BIO_get_data as well
as the fallback implementation.  BIO_{get,set}_app_data have been
there since long before any OpenSSL version that we still support,
even in the back branches.

Also, update src/test/ssl/t/001_ssltests.pl to allow for a minor
change in an error message spelling that evidently came in with 3.2.

01eca6a913 Fix race condition with BIO methods initialization in libpq with threads
The libpq code in charge of creating per-connection SSL objects was
prone to a race condition when loading the custom BIO methods needed by
my_SSL_set_fd().  As BIO methods are stored as a static variable, the
initialization of a connection could fail because it could be possible
to have one thread refer to my_bio_methods while it is being manipulated
by a second concurrent thread.

This error has been introduced by 8bb14cdd33, that has removed
ssl_config_mutex around the call of my_SSL_set_fd(), that itself sets
the custom BIO methods used in libpq.  Like previously, the BIO method
initialization is now protected by the existing ssl_config_mutex, itself
initialized earlier for WIN32.

While on it, document that my_bio_methods is protected by
ssl_config_mutex, as this can be easy to miss.

d053a879bb Fix timing-dependent failure in GSSAPI data transmission.
When using GSSAPI encryption in non-blocking mode, libpq sometimes
failed with "GSSAPI caller failed to retransmit all data needing
to be retried".  The cause is that pqPutMsgEnd rounds its transmit
request down to an even multiple of 8K, and sometimes that can lead
to not requesting a write of data that was requested to be written
(but reported as not written) earlier.  That can upset pg_GSS_write's
logic for dealing with not-yet-written data, since it's possible
the data in question had already been incorporated into an encrypted
packet that we weren't able to send during the previous call.

We could fix this with a one-or-two-line hack to disable pqPutMsgEnd's
round-down behavior, but that seems like making the caller work around
a behavior that pg_GSS_write shouldn't expose in this way.  Instead,
adjust pg_GSS_write to never report a partial write: it either
reports a complete write, or reflects the failure of the lower-level
pqsecure_raw_write call.  The requirement still exists for the caller
to present at least as much data as on the previous call, but with
the caller-visible write start point not moving there is no temptation
for it to present less.  We lose some ability to reclaim buffer space
early, but I doubt that that will make much difference in practice.

This also gets rid of a rather dubious assumption that "any
interesting failure condition (from pqsecure_raw_write) will recur
on the next try".  We've not seen failure reports traceable to that,
but I've never trusted it particularly and am glad to remove it.

Make the same adjustments to the equivalent backend routine
be_gssapi_write().  It is probable that there's no bug on the backend
side, since we don't have a notion of nonblock mode there; but we
should keep the logic the same to ease future maintenance.

Call pqPipelineFlush from PQsendFlushRequest
When PQsendFlushRequest() was added by commit 69cf1d5429, we argued
against adding a PQflush() call in it[1].  This is still the right
decision: if the user wants a flush to occur, they can just call that.
However, we failed to realize that the message bytes could still be
given to the kernel for transmitting when this can be made without
blocking.  That's what pqPipelineFlush() does, and it is done for every
single other message type sent by libpq, so do that.

(When the socket is in blocking mode this may indeed block, but that's
what all the other libpq message-sending routines do, too.)

721856ff24 Remove distprep
A PostgreSQL release tarball contains a number of prebuilt files, in
particular files produced by bison, flex, perl, and well as html and
man documentation.  We have done this consistent with established
practice at the time to not require these tools for building from a
tarball.  Some of these tools were hard to get, or get the right
version of, from time to time, and shipping the prebuilt output was a
convenience to users.

Now this has at least two problems:

One, we have to make the build system(s) work in two modes: Building
from a git checkout and building from a tarball.  This is pretty
complicated, but it works so far for autoconf/make.  It does not
currently work for meson; you can currently only build with meson from
a git checkout.  Making meson builds work from a tarball seems very
difficult or impossible.  One particular problem is that since meson
requires a separate build directory, we cannot make the build update
files like gram.h in the source tree.  So if you were to build from a
tarball and update gram.y, you will have a gram.h in the source tree
and one in the build tree, but the way things work is that the
compiler will always use the one in the source tree.  So you cannot,
for example, make any gram.y changes when building from a tarball.
This seems impossible to fix in a non-horrible way.

Second, there is increased interest nowadays in precisely tracking the
origin of software.  We can reasonably track contributions into the
git tree, and users can reasonably track the path from a tarball to
packages and downloads and installs.  But what happens between the git
tree and the tarball is obscure and in some cases non-reproducible.

The solution for both of these issues is to get rid of the step that
adds prebuilt files to the tarball.  The tarball now only contains
what is in the git tree (*).  Getting the additional build
dependencies is no longer a problem nowadays, and the complications to
keep these dual build modes working are significant.  And of course we
want to get the meson build system working universally.

This commit removes the make distprep target altogether.  The make
dist target continues to do its job, it just doesn't call distprep
anymore.

(*) - The tarball also contains the INSTALL file that is built at make
dist time, but not by distprep.  This is unchanged for now.

The make maintainer-clean target, whose job it is to remove the
prebuilt files in addition to what make distclean does, is now just an
alias to make distprep.  (In practice, it is probably obsolete given
that git clean is available.)

The following programs are now hard build requirements in configure
(they were already required by meson.build):

- bison
- flex
- perl

611806cd72 Add trailing commas to enum definitions
Since C99, there can be a trailing comma after the last value in an
enum definition.  A lot of new code has been introducing this style on
the fly.  Some new patches are now taking an inconsistent approach to
this.  Some add the last comma on the fly if they add a new last
value, some are trying to preserve the existing style in each place,
some are even dropping the last comma if there was one.  We could
nudge this all in a consistent direction if we just add the trailing
commas everywhere once.

I omitted a few places where there was a fixed "last" value that will
always stay last.  I also skipped the header files of libpq and ecpg,
in case people want to use those with older compilers.  There were
also a small number of cases where the enum type wasn't used anywhere
(but the enum values were), which ended up confusing pgindent a bit,
so I left those alone.

66d6086cbc Speed up pg_regress server readiness testing.
Instead of connecting to the server with psql to check if it is ready
for running tests, this changes pg_regress to use PQPing which avoids
performing system() calls which are expensive on some platforms, like
Windows. The frequency of tests is also increased in order to connect
to the server faster.

This patch is part of a larger effort to make testing consume fewer
resources in order to be able to fit more tests into the available
CI system constraints.

03734a7fed Add more SQL/JSON constructor functions
This Patch introduces three SQL standard JSON functions:

JSON()
JSON_SCALAR()
JSON_SERIALIZE()

JSON() produces json values from text, bytea, json or jsonb values,
and has facilitites for handling duplicate keys.

JSON_SCALAR() produces a json value from any scalar sql value,
including json and jsonb.

JSON_SERIALIZE() produces text or bytea from input which containis
or represents json or jsonb;

For the most part these functions don't add any significant new
capabilities, but they will be of use to users wanting standard
compliant JSON handling.

Catversion bumped as this changes ruleutils.c.

8fab4b3480 Include <limits.h> in fe-auth.c, to get CHAR_BIT reliably.
fe-auth.c references CHAR_BIT since commit 3a465cc67, but it
did not #include <limits.h>, which per POSIX is where that
symbol is defined.  This escaped notice so far because
(a) on most platforms, <sys/param.h> pulls in <limits.h>,
(b) even if yours doesn't, OpenSSL pulls it in, so compiling
with --with-openssl masks the omission.

68a4b58eca Remove --disable-thread-safety and related code.
All supported computers have either POSIX or Windows threads, and we no
longer have any automated testing of --disable-thread-safety.  We define
a vestigial ENABLE_THREAD_SAFETY macro to 1 in ecpg_config.h in case it
is useful, but we no longer test it anywhere in PostgreSQL code, and
associated dead code paths are removed.

The Meson and perl-based Windows build scripts never had an equivalent
build option.

89333db963 Rename port/thread.c to port/user.c.
Historically this module dealt with thread-safety of system interfaces,
but now all that's left is wrapper code for user name and home directory
lookup.  Arguably the Windows variants of this logic could be moved in
here too, to justify its presence under port.  For now, just tidy up
some obsolete references to multi-threading, and give the file a
meaningful name.

ae6d06f096 Handle \v as a whitespace character in parsers
This commit comes as a continuation of the discussion that has led to
d522b05, as \v was handled inconsistently when parsing array values or
anything going through the parsers, and changing a parser behavior in
stable branches is a scary thing to do.  The parsing of array values now
uses the more central scanner_isspace() and array_isspace() is removed.

As pointing out by Peter Eisentraut, fix a confusing reference to
horizontal space in the parsers with the term "horiz_space".  \f was
included in this set since 3cfdd8f from 2000, but it is not horizontal.
"horiz_space" is renamed to "non_newline_space", to refer to all
whitespace characters except newlines.

The changes impact the parsers for the backend, psql, seg, cube, ecpg
and replication commands.  Note that JSON should not escape \v, as per
RFC 7159, so these are not touched.

28b5726561 libpq: Add support for Close on portals and statements
The following routines are added to libpq:
PGresult *PQclosePrepared(PGconn *conn, const char *stmt);
PGresult *PQclosePortal(PGconn *conn, const char *portal);
int PQsendClosePrepared(PGconn *conn, const char *stmt);
int PQsendClosePortal(PGconn *conn, const char *portal);

The "send" routines are non-blocking versions of the two others.

Close messages are part of the protocol but they did not have a libpq
implementation.  And, having these routines is for instance useful with
connection poolers as these can detect more easily Close messages
than DEALLOCATE queries.

The implementation takes advantage of what the Describe routines rely on
for portals and statements.  Some regression tests are added in
libpq_pipeline, for the four new routines, by closing portals and
statements created already by the tests.

8e278b6576 Remove support for OpenSSL 1.0.1
Here are some notes about this change:
- As X509_get_signature_nid() should always exist (OpenSSL and
LibreSSL), hence HAVE_X509_GET_SIGNATURE_NID is now gone.
- OPENSSL_API_COMPAT is bumped to 0x10002000L.
- One comment related to 1.0.1e introduced by 74242c2 is removed.

Upstream OpenSSL still provides long-term support for 1.0.2 in a closed
fashion, so removing it is out of scope for a few years, at least.

a1cd982098 meson: Add dependencies to perl modules to various script invocations
Eventually it is likely worth trying to deal with this in a more expansive
way, by generating dependency files generated within the scripts. But it's not
entirely obvious how to do that in perl and is work more suitable for 17
anyway.

1f9f6aa491 Spell the values of libpq's gssdelegation parameter as "0" and "1".
That's how other boolean options are handled, so do likewise.
The previous coding with "enable" and "disable" was seemingly
modeled on gssencmode, but that's a three-way flag.

While at it, add PGGSSDELEGATION to the set of environment
variables cleared by pg_regress and Utils.pm.

0245f8db36 Pre-beta mechanical code beautification.
Run pgindent, pgperltidy, and reformat-dat-files.

This set of diffs is a bit larger than typical.  We've updated to
pg_bsd_indent 2.1.2, which properly indents variable declarations that
have multi-line initialization expressions (the continuation lines are
now indented one tab stop).  We've also updated to perltidy version
20230309 and changed some of its settings, which reduces its desire to
add whitespace to lines to make assignments etc. line up.  Going
forward, that should make for fewer random-seeming changes to existing
code.

69537f5d17 Remove duplicate lines of code
Commit 6df7a9698b accidentally included two identical prototypes for
default_multirange_selectivi() and commit 086cf1458c added a break;
statement where one was already present, thus duplicating it.  While
there is no bug caused by this, fix by removing the duplicated lines
as they provide no value.

Backpatch the fix for duplicate prototypes to v14 and the duplicate
break statement fix to all supported branches to avoid backpatching
hazards due to the removal.

60ce452729 Make libpq error messages consistent for translation
The errormessage for an incorrect require_auth method wasn't using the
common "invalid %s value" errormessage which lessens the burden on our
translators.  Fix by changing to that format to make use of existing
translations and to make error messages consistent in wording.

0b5d1fb36a Fix errormessage for missing system CA in OpenSSL 3.1
The error message for a missing or invalid system CA when using
sslrootcert=system differs based on the OpenSSL version used.

In OpenSSL 1.0.1-3.0 it is reported as SSL Error, with varying
degrees of helpfulness in the error message. With OpenSSL 3.1 it
is reported as an SSL SYSCALL error with "Undefined error" as
the error message. This fix pulls out the particular error in
OpenSSL 3.1 as a certificate verify error in order to help the
user better figure out what happened, and to keep the ssl test
working. While there is no evidence that extracing the errors
will clobber errno, this adds a guard against that regardless
to also make the consistent with how we handle OpenSSL errors
elsewhere. It also memorizes the output from OpenSSL 3.0 in
the test in cases where the system CA isn't responding.

f180290847 ecpg: Fix handling of strings in ORACLE compat code with SQLDA
When compiled with -C ORACLE, ecpg_get_data() had a one-off issue where
it would incorrectly store the null terminator byte to str[-1] when
varcharsize is 0, which is something that can happen when using SQLDA.
This would eat 1 byte from the previous field stored, corrupting the
results generated.

All the callers of ecpg_get_data() estimate and allocate enough storage
for the data received, and the fix of this commit relies on this
assumption.  Note that this maps to the case where no padding or
truncation is required.

This issue has been introduced by 3b7ab43 with the Oracle compatibility
option, so backpatch down to v11.

6633cfb216 De-Revert "Add support for Kerberos credential delegation"
This reverts commit 3d03b24c3 (Revert Add support for Kerberos
credential delegation) which was committed on the grounds of concern
about portability, but on further review and discussion, it's clear that
we are better off explicitly requiring MIT Kerberos as that appears to
be the only GSSAPI library currently that's under proper maintenance
and ongoing development.  The API used for storing credentials was added
to MIT Kerberos over a decade ago while for the other libraries which
appear to be mainly based on Heimdal, which exists explicitly to be a
re-implementation of MIT Kerberos, the API never made it to a released
version (even though it was added to the Heimdal git repo over 5 years
ago..).

This post-feature-freeze change was approved by the RMT.

3d4fa227bc Add support for Kerberos credential delegation
Support GSSAPI/Kerberos credentials being delegated to the server by a
client.  With this, a user authenticating to PostgreSQL using Kerberos
(GSSAPI) credentials can choose to delegate their credentials to the
PostgreSQL server (which can choose to accept them, or not), allowing
the server to then use those delegated credentials to connect to
another service, such as with postgres_fdw or dblink or theoretically
any other service which is able to be authenticated using Kerberos.

Both postgres_fdw and dblink are changed to allow non-superuser
password-less connections but only when GSSAPI credentials have been
delegated to the server by the client and GSSAPI is used to
authenticate to the remote system.

8eda731465 Allow to use system CA pool for certificate verification
This adds a new option to libpq's sslrootcert, "system", which will load
the system trusted CA roots for certificate verification. This is a more
convenient way to achieve this than pointing to the system CA roots
manually since the location can differ by installation and be locally
adjusted by env vars in OpenSSL.

When sslrootcert is set to system, sslmode is forced to be verify-full
as weaker modes aren't providing much security for public CAs.

Changing the location of the system roots by setting environment vars is
not supported by LibreSSL so the tests will use a heuristic to determine
if the system being tested is LibreSSL or OpenSSL.

The workaround in .cirrus.yml is required to handle a strange interaction
between homebrew and the openssl@3 formula; hopefully this can be removed
in the near future.

The original patch was written by Thomas Habets, which was later revived
by Jacob Champion.

Code review for recent SQL/JSON commits
- At the last minute and for no particularly good reason, I changed the
  WITHOUT token to be marked especially for lookahead, from the one in
  WITHOUT TIME to the one in WITHOUT UNIQUE.  Study of upcoming patches
  (where a new WITHOUT ARRAY WRAPPER clause is added) showed me that the
  former was better, so put it back the way the original patch had it.

- update exprTypmod() for JsonConstructorExpr to return the typmod of
  the RETURNING clause, as a comment there suggested.  Perhaps it's
  possible for this to make a difference with datetime types, but I
  didn't try to build a test case.

- The nodeFuncs.c support code for new nodes was calling walker()
  directly instead of the WALK() macro as introduced by commit 1c27d16e6e.
  Modernize that.  Also add exprLocation() support for a couple of nodes
  that missed it.  Lastly, reorder the code more sensibly.

The WITHOUT_LA -> WITHOUT change means that stored rules containing
either WITHOUT TIME ZONE or WITHOUT UNIQUE KEYS would change
representation.  Therefore, bump catversion.

SQL/JSON: support the IS JSON predicate
This patch introduces the SQL standard IS JSON predicate. It operates
on text and bytea values representing JSON, as well as on the json and
jsonb types. Each test has IS and IS NOT variants and supports a WITH
UNIQUE KEYS flag. The tests are:

IS JSON [VALUE]
IS JSON ARRAY
IS JSON OBJECT
IS JSON SCALAR

These should be self-explanatory.

The WITH UNIQUE KEYS flag makes these return false when duplicate keys
exist in any object within the value, not necessarily directly contained
in the outermost object.

2fe7a6df94 Fix pointer cast for seed calculation on 32-bit systems
The fallback seed for when pg_strong_random cannot generate a high
quality seed mixes in the address of the conn object, but the cast
failed to take the word size into consideration. Fix by casting to
a uintptr_t instead. The seed calculation was added in 7f5b19817e.

The code as it stood generated the following warning on mamba and
lapwing in the buildfarm:

7f5b19817e Support connection load balancing in libpq
This adds support for load balancing connections with libpq using a
connection parameter: load_balance_hosts=<string>. When setting the
param to random, hosts and addresses will be connected to in random
order. This then results in load balancing across these addresses and
hosts when multiple clients or frequent connection setups are used.

The randomization employed performs two levels of shuffling:

  1. The given hosts are randomly shuffled, before resolving them
     one-by-one.
  2. Once a host its addresses get resolved, the returned addresses
     are shuffled, before trying to connect to them one-by-one.

44d85ba5a3 Copy and store addrinfo in libpq-owned private memory
This refactors libpq to copy addrinfos returned by getaddrinfo to
memory owned by libpq such that future improvements can alter for
example the order of entries.

As a nice side effect of this refactor the mechanism for iteration
over addresses in PQconnectPoll is now identical to its iteration
over hosts.

Most of the functionality was already present in PostgreSQL-specific
functions, but these include some new functionality such as the ability
to skip or include NULL values, and to allow duplicate keys or throw

b577743000 Make SCRAM iteration count configurable
Replace the hardcoded value with a GUC such that the iteration
count can be raised in order to increase protection against
brute-force attacks.  The hardcoded value for SCRAM iteration
count was defined to be 4096, which is taken from RFC 7677, so
set the default for the GUC to 4096 to match.  In RFC 7677 the
recommendation is at least 15000 iterations but 4096 is listed
as a SHOULD requirement given that it's estimated to yield a
0.5s processing time on a mobile handset of the time of RFC
writing (late 2015).

Raising the iteration count of SCRAM will make stored passwords
more resilient to brute-force attacks at a higher computational
cost during connection establishment.  Lowering the count will
reduce computational overhead during connections at the tradeoff
of reducing strength against brute-force attacks.

There are however platforms where even a modest iteration count
yields a too high computational overhead, with weaker password
encryption schemes chosen as a result.  In these situations,
SCRAM with a very low iteration count still gives benefits over
weaker schemes like md5, so we allow the iteration count to be
set to one at the low end.

The new GUC is intentionally generically named such that it can
be made to support future SCRAM standards should they emerge.
At that point the value can be made into key:value pairs with
an undefined key as a default which will be backwards compatible
with this.

36f40ce2dc libpq: Add sslcertmode option to control client certificates
The sslcertmode option controls whether the server is allowed and/or
required to request a certificate from the client.  There are three
modes:
- "allow" is the default and follows the current behavior, where a
configured client certificate is sent if the server requests one
(via one of its default locations or sslcert).  With the current
implementation, will happen whenever TLS is negotiated.
- "disable" causes the client to refuse to send a client certificate
even if sslcert is configured or if a client certificate is available in
one of its default locations.
- "require" causes the client to fail if a client certificate is never
sent and the server opens a connection anyway.  This doesn't add any
additional security, since there is no guarantee that the server is
validating the certificate correctly, but it may helpful to troubleshoot
more complicated TLS setups.

sslcertmode=require requires SSL_CTX_set_cert_cb(), available since
OpenSSL 1.0.2.  Note that LibreSSL does not include it.

Using a connection parameter different than require_auth has come up as
the simplest design because certificate authentication does not rely
directly on any of the AUTH_REQ_* codes, and one may want to require a
certificate to be sent in combination of a given authentication method,
like SCRAM-SHA-256.

TAP tests are added in src/test/ssl/, some of them relying on sslinfo to
check if a certificate has been set.  These are compatible across all
the versions of OpenSSL supported on HEAD (currently down to 1.0.1).

bfc9497ece libpq: Use modern socket flags, if available.
Since commit 7627b91cd5, libpq has used FD_CLOEXEC so that sockets
wouldn't be leaked to subprograms.  With enough bad luck, a
multi-threaded program might fork in between the socket() and fcntl()
calls.  We can close that tiny gap by using SOCK_CLOEXEC instead of a
separate call.  While here, we might as well do the same for
SOCK_NONBLOCK, to save another syscall.

These flags are expected to appear in the next revision of the POSIX
standard, specifically to address this problem.  Our Unixoid targets
except macOS and AIX have had them for a long time, and macOS would
hopefully use guarded availability to roll them out, so it seems enough
to use a simple ifdef test for availability until we hear otherwise.
Windows doesn't have them, but has non-inheritable sockets by default.

98ae2c84a4 libpq: Remove code for SCM credential authentication
Support for SCM credential authentication has been removed in the
backend in 9.1, and libpq has kept some code to handle it for
compatibility.

Commit be4585b, that did the cleanup of the backend code, has done
so because the code was not really portable originally.  And, as there
are likely little chances that this is used these days, this removes the
remaining code from libpq.  An error will now be raised by libpq if
attempting to connect to a server that returns AUTH_REQ_SCM_CREDS,
instead.

References to SCM credential authentication are removed from the
protocol documentation.  This removes some meson and configure checks.

4ef1be5a0b pkg-config Requires.private entries should be comma-separated
In the .pc (pkg-config) files generated by the make and meson builds,
the Requires.private entries use different delimiters.  The make build
uses spaces, the meson build uses commas. The pkg-config documentation
says that it should be comma-separated, but apparently about half the
.pc in the wild use just spaces.  The pkg-config source code
acknowledges that both commas and spaces work.

This changes the make build to use commas, for consistency.

3a465cc678 libpq: Add support for require_auth to control authorized auth methods
The new connection parameter require_auth allows a libpq client to
define a list of comma-separated acceptable authentication types for use
with the server.  There is no negotiation: if the server does not
present one of the allowed authentication requests, the connection
attempt done by the client fails.

The following keywords can be defined in the list:
- password, for AUTH_REQ_PASSWORD.
- md5, for AUTH_REQ_MD5.
- gss, for AUTH_REQ_GSS[_CONT].
- sspi, for AUTH_REQ_SSPI and AUTH_REQ_GSS_CONT.
- scram-sha-256, for AUTH_REQ_SASL[_CONT|_FIN].
- creds, for AUTH_REQ_SCM_CREDS (perhaps this should be removed entirely
now).
- none, to control unauthenticated connections.

All the methods that can be defined in the list can be negated, like
"!password", in which case the server must NOT use the listed
authentication type.  The special method "none" allows/disallows the use
of unauthenticated connections (but it does not govern transport-level
authentication via TLS or GSSAPI).

Internally, the patch logic is tied to check_expected_areq(), that was
used for channel_binding, ensuring that an incoming request is
compatible with conn->require_auth.  It also introduces a new flag,
conn->client_finished_auth, which is set by various authentication
routines when the client side of the handshake is finished.  This
signals to check_expected_areq() that an AUTH_REQ_OK from the server is
expected, and allows the client to complain if the server bypasses
authentication entirely, with for example the reception of a too-early
AUTH_REQ_OK message.

Regression tests are added in authentication TAP tests for all the
keywords supported (except "creds", because it is around only for
compatibility reasons).  A new TAP script has been added for SSPI, as
there was no script dedicated to it yet.  It relies on SSPI being the
default authentication method on Windows, as set by pg_regress.

e0a09d4e35 Fix inconsistent error handling for GSS encryption in PQconnectPoll()
The error cases for TLS and GSS encryption were inconsistent.  After TLS
fails, the connection is marked as dead and follow-up calls of
PQconnectPoll() would return immediately, but GSS encryption was not
doing that, so the connection would still have been allowed to enter the
GSS handling code.  This was handled incorrectly when gssencmode was set
to "require".  "prefer" was working correctly, and this could not happen
under "disable" as GSS encryption would not be attempted.

This commit makes the error handling of GSS encryption on par with TLS
portion, fixing the case of gssencmode=require.

6a3002715e meson: Make auto the default of the ssl option
The 'ssl' option is of type 'combo', but we add a choice 'auto' that
simulates the behavior of a feature option.  This way, openssl is used
automatically by default if present, but we retain the ability to
potentially select another ssl library.

5e044471a1 Check for unbounded authentication exchanges in libpq.
A couple of code paths in CONNECTION_AWAITING_RESPONSE will eagerly read
bytes off a connection that should be closed. Don't let a misbehaving
server chew up client resources here; a v2 error can't be infinitely
long, and a v3 error should be bounded by its original message length.

For the existing error_return cases, I added some additional error
messages for symmetry with the new ones, and cleaned up some message
rot.

9244c11afe Fix handling of SCRAM-SHA-256's channel binding with RSA-PSS certificates
OpenSSL 1.1.1 and newer versions have added support for RSA-PSS
certificates, which requires the use of a specific routine in OpenSSL to
determine which hash function to use when compiling it when using
channel binding in SCRAM-SHA-256.  X509_get_signature_nid(), that is the
original routine the channel binding code has relied on, is not able to
determine which hash algorithm to use for such certificates.  However,
X509_get_signature_info(), new to OpenSSL 1.1.1, is able to do it.  This
commit switches the channel binding logic to rely on
X509_get_signature_info() over X509_get_signature_nid(), which would be
the choice when building with 1.1.1 or newer.

The error could have been triggered on the client or the server, hence
libpq and the backend need to have their related code paths patched.
Note that attempting to load an RSA-PSS certificate with OpenSSL 1.1.0
or older leads to a failure due to an unsupported algorithm.

The discovery of relying on X509_get_signature_info() comes from Jacob,
the tests have been written by Heikki (with few tweaks from me), while I
have bundled the whole together while adding the bits needed for MSVC
and meson.

This issue exists since channel binding exists, so backpatch all the way
down.  Some tests are added in 15~, triggered if compiling with OpenSSL
1.1.1 or newer, where the certificate and key files can easily be
generated for RSA-PSS.

71c37797d7 Properly NULL-terminate GSS receive buffer on error packet reception
pqsecure_open_gss() includes a code path handling error messages with
v2-style protocol messages coming from the server.  The client-side
buffer holding the error message does not force a NULL-termination, with
the data of the server getting copied to the errorMessage of the
connection.  Hence, it would be possible for a server to send an
unterminated string and copy arbitrary bytes in the buffer receiving the
error message in the client, opening the door to a crash or even data
exposure.

As at this stage of the authentication process the exchange has not been
completed yet, this could be abused by an attacker without Kerberos
credentials.  Clients that have a valid kerberos cache are vulnerable as
libpq opportunistically requests for it except if gssencmode is
disabled.

This allows underscores to be used in integer and numeric literals,
and their corresponding type input functions, for visual grouping.
For example:

A single underscore is allowed between any 2 digits, or immediately
after the base prefix indicator of non-decimal integers, per SQL:202x
draft.

b3bb7d12af Remove hardcoded dependency to cryptohash type in the internals of SCRAM
SCRAM_KEY_LEN was a variable used in the internal routines of SCRAM to
size a set of fixed-sized arrays used in the SHA and HMAC computations
during the SASL exchange or when building a SCRAM password.  This had a
hard dependency on SHA-256, reducing the flexibility of SCRAM when it
comes to the addition of more hash methods.  A second issue was that
SHA-256 is assumed as the cryptohash method to use all the time.

This commit renames SCRAM_KEY_LEN to a more generic SCRAM_KEY_MAX_LEN,
which is used as the size of the buffers used by the internal routines
of SCRAM.  This is aimed at tracking centrally the maximum size
necessary for all the hash methods supported by SCRAM.  A global
variable has the advantage of keeping the code in its simplest form,
reducing the need of more alloc/free logic for all the buffers used in
the hash calculations.

A second change is that the key length (SHA digest length) and hash
types are now tracked by the state data in the backend and the frontend,
the common portions being extended to handle these as arguments by the
internal routines of SCRAM.  There are a few RFC proposals floating
around to extend the SCRAM protocol, including some to use stronger
cryptohash algorithms, so this lifts some of the existing restrictions
in the code.

The code in charge of parsing and building SCRAM secrets is extended to
rely on the key length and on the cryptohash type used for the exchange,
assuming currently that only SHA-256 is supported for the moment.  Note
that the mock authentication simply enforces SHA-256.

df8b8968d4 Order getopt arguments
Order the letters in the arguments of getopt() and getopt_long(), as
well as in the subsequent switch statements.  In most cases, I used
alphabetical with lower case first.  In a few cases, existing
different orders (e.g., upper case first) was kept to reduce the diff

d74a366aa2 Fix comment in fe-auth-scram.c
The frontend-side routine in charge of building a SCRAM verifier
mentioned that the restrictions applying to SASLprep on the password
with the encoding are described at the top of fe-auth-scram.c, but this
information is in auth-scram.c.

This is wrong since 8f8b9be, so backpatch all the way down as this is an
important documentation bit.

dce92e59b1 libpq: Correct processing of startup response messages
After sending a startup message, libpq expects either an error
response ('E') or an authentication request ('R').  Before processing
the message, it ensures it has read enough bytes to correspond to the
length specified in the message.  However, when processing the 'R'
message, if an EOF status is returned it loops back waiting for more
input, even though we already checked that we have enough input.  In
this particular case, this is probably not reachable anyway, because
other code ensures we have enough bytes for an authentication request
message, but the code is wrong and misleading.  In the more general
case, processing a faulty message could result in an EOF status, which
would then result in an infinite loop waiting for the end of a message
that will never come.  The correction is to make this an error.

0873b2d354 libpq error message refactoring
libpq now contains a mix of error message strings that end with
newlines and don't end with newlines, due to some newer code paths
with new ways of passing errors around.  This leads to confusion and
mistakes both during development and translation.

This adds new functions libpq_append_error() and
libpq_append_conn_error() that encapsulate common code paths for
producing error message strings.  Notably, these functions append the
newline, so that the string appearing in the code does not end with a
newline.  This makes (almost) all error message strings in libpq
uniform in this regard (and also consistent with how we handle it
outside of libpq code).  (There are a few exceptions that are
difficult to fit into this scheme, but they are only a few.)

libpq: Reset singlerow flag correctly in pipeline mode
When a query whose results were requested in single-row mode is the last
in the queue by the time those results are being read, the single-row
flag was not being reset, because we were returning early from
pqPipelineProcessQueue.  Move that stanza up so that the flag is always
reset at the end of sending that query's results.

Add a test for the situation.

e5555657ba meson: Add support for building with precompiled headers
This substantially speeds up building for windows, due to the vast amount of
headers included via windows.h. A cross build from linux targetting mingw goes
from

994.11user 136.43system 0:31.58elapsed 3579%CPU
to
422.41user 89.05system 0:14.35elapsed 3562%CPU

The wins on windows are similar-ish (but I don't have a system at hand just
now for actual numbers). Targetting other operating systems the wins are far
smaller (tested linux, macOS, FreeBSD).

For now precompiled headers are disabled by default, it's not clear how well
they work on all platforms. E.g. on FreeBSD gcc doesn't seem to have working
support, but clang does.

When doing a full build precompiled headers are only beneficial for targets
with multiple .c files, as meson builds a separate precompiled header for each
target (so that different compilation options take effect). This commit
therefore only changes target with at least two .c files to use precompiled
headers.

Because this commit adds b_pch=false to the default_options new build
directories will have precompiled headers disabled by default, however
existing build directories will continue use the default value of b_pch, which
is true.

Note that using precompiled headers with ccache requires setting
CCACHE_SLOPPINESS=pch_defines,time_macros to get hits.
