140d4ebcb4 Tsearch2 functionality migrates to core. The bulk of this work is by
Oleg Bartunov and Teodor Sigaev, but I did a lot of editorializing,
so anything that's broken is probably my fault.

Documentation is nonexistent as yet, but let's land the patch so we can
get some portability testing done.

115e5dd597 Remove ancient hack to work around a peculiarity of libcurses on HPUX.
Since we now use libtermcap in preference to libcurses, no need for hack
anymore.

71d21577de Add '-Wl,' prefix to linker switches consistently. Remove shlib_symbolic
macros, which aren't used anywhere and haven't been for some time.

0b5c72d9ba On some HPUX versions/hardware, it seems we need to include libgcc.a in
the regression test shared libraries.

8e57975219 Clean up rpath handling for HPUX --- we can't use the cc-style rpath
switch syntax when calling ld directly.

a9ddd649df Modify the platform-specific makefiles so that macro 'rpath' is defined
in terms of macro 'rpathdir', as I proposed a few weeks ago. In itself
this commit shouldn't change the behavior at all, but it opens the door
to using special rpaths for the PL shared libraries, as seems to be
needed for plperl in particular.

346900e83b Fix shared library linking operations to work properly on all (or at
least more) combinations of HP-UX hardware, compiler, and linker.

9f47c4cc5c AFAICT, none of our shared libraries are anywhere near big enough to
need -fPIC on HPPA. Reduce to -fpic.

b1a38a4380 Install the SQL command man pages into a section appropriate for each
system. Some systems did not understand the 'l' section, and in general
it wasn't entirely appropriate.

On SCO OpenServer, the man pages won't be installed at all until someone
figures out their man system.

5b4045d5d6 Hadn't built on a PARISC 1.1 box in a long time ... but when I did,
it turned out that the libpq makefile chokes on '-L /lib/pa1.1'.
Need to remove the space so filter rule works.

c7a794998a Separate CFLAGS_SL and CXXFLAGS_SL, to allow building with C and C++
compilers from different providers. (Especially important since the
C++ compiler that goes with your favourite C compiler might not work.)

6707ede813 Make use of system-specific linker option to embed shared library search
path into executables and shared libraries (-rpath or -R for most). Can be
disabled with --disable-rpath, since some binary packaging standards do not
like this option.

f8ff1ee5aa Move DLSUFFIX, AROPT, and CFLAGS_SL settings from template to
Makefile.port, since they are of no use to configure and much of the
library magic happens in Makefile.port anyway.

Use __alpha, not __alpha__, since the former is universally available.
Remove -DNOFIXADE from the compile command line and put it in the port
include file.

06cd0f1a32 Substituted new configure test for types of accept()
Interfaced a lot of the custom tests to the config.cache, in the process
made them separate macros and grouped them out into files. Made naming
adjustments.

Removed a couple of useless/unused configure tests.

Disabled C++ by default. C++ is no more special than Perl, Python, and Tcl.
And it breaks equally often. :(

b10a719777 Use autoconf to determine whether system has POSIX signals,
instead of relying on port's os.h to tell us. (Needed for HPUX
where system major version is not enough info.)
configure unsets USE_TK if X libraries not found.
doc/Makefile uses gzcat or zcat as found by autoconf.

09a5dabc30 Remove port specific Makefile 'targets' (ie. shared libraries) from
Makefile.global and move them to seperate 'include' makefiles

Over time, should become even more port specific:

ie. Makefile.BSD44_derived should be broken down into netbsd/freebsd
specific ports
