95a6dbf12b Do a direct probe during postmaster startup to determine the maximum 
number of openable files and the number already opened.  This eliminates
depending on sysconf(_SC_OPEN_MAX), and allows much saner behavior on
platforms where open-file slots are used up by semaphores.

someone asked me about the FK deadlock fix, mentioned in the 7.3.3
release notes as 3rd change:

Actually, that fix was available with 7.4, not 7.3. Don't know if we can
retroactively change the release-notes though.

10b84be9b3 Make PQescapeBytea and byteaout consistent with each other, and 
octal escape all octets outside the range 0x20 to 0x7e. This fixes
the problem pointed out by Sergey Yatskevich here:

fc2e2ef64e Fix datetime input parsing to accept YYYY-MONTHNAME-DD and related syntaxes, 
which had been unintentionally broken by recent changes to tighten up the
DateStyle rules for all-numeric date input.  Add documentation and
regression tests for this, too.

5ccf7033bf Fix misstatement about the required value of SEMVMX. Given our current 
usage of PGSemaMagic, the minimum required value is actually 537, but
say 1000 just to use a round number.  255 is *not* good enough.

8545482947 When a superuser does GRANT or REVOKE on an object he doesn't own, 
process the command as though it were issued by the object owner.
This prevents creating weird scenarios in which the same privileges
may appear to flow from different sources, and ensures that a superuser
can in fact revoke all privileges if he wants to.  In particular this
means that the regression tests work when run by a superuser other than
the original bootstrap userid.  Per report from Larry Rosenman.

ede9b68e03 Use Tcl ByteArray objects to avoid unwanted character set translation 
in libpgtcl's lo_read/lo_write commands.  Also, deal correctly with

cdbf9b328e Move docs about index cost estimation functions and writing a procedural 
language handler to the 'Internals' area, per my proposal of yesterday.
Clean up the trigger documentation a bit.  Push SPI chapter to the end
of its part, and reorder the Internals chapters into what seems a more
sensible order (at the moment anyway).

0a4048646b Document all the system views created by initdb (several of these were 
never documented anywhere, sigh).  Centralize the detailed documentation
of system views into catalogs.sgml, and provide cross-references.
