d3fdfdcd1c Skip .DS_Store files in server side utils
The macOS Finder application creates .DS_Store files in directories
when opened,  which creates problems for serverside utilities which
expect all files to be PostgreSQL specific files.  Skip these files
when encountered in pg_checksums, pg_rewind and pg_basebackup.

This was extracted from a larger patchset for skipping hidden files
and system files, where the concencus was to just skip these. Since
this is equally likely to happen in every version, backpatch to all
supported versions.

942cc240f9 Rethink handling of [Prevent|Is]InTransactionBlock in pipeline mode.
Commits f92944137 et al. made IsInTransactionBlock() set the
XACT_FLAGS_NEEDIMMEDIATECOMMIT flag before returning "false",
on the grounds that that kept its API promises equivalent to those of
PreventInTransactionBlock().  This turns out to be a bad idea though,
because it allows an ANALYZE in a pipelined series of commands to
cause an immediate commit, which is unexpected.

Furthermore, if we return "false" then we have another issue,
which is that ANALYZE will decide it's allowed to do internal
commit-and-start-transaction sequences, thus possibly unexpectedly
committing the effects of previous commands in the pipeline.

To fix the latter situation, invent another transaction state flag
XACT_FLAGS_PIPELINING, which explicitly records the fact that we
have executed some extended-protocol command and not yet seen a
commit for it.  Then, require that flag to not be set before allowing
InTransactionBlock() to return "false".

Having done that, we can remove its setting of NEEDIMMEDIATECOMMIT
without fear of causing problems.  This means that the API guarantees
of IsInTransactionBlock now diverge from PreventInTransactionBlock,
which is mildly annoying, but it seems OK given the very limited usage
of IsInTransactionBlock.  (In any case, a caller preferring the old
behavior could always set NEEDIMMEDIATECOMMIT for itself.)

For consistency also require XACT_FLAGS_PIPELINING to not be set
in PreventInTransactionBlock.  This too is meant to prevent commands
such as CREATE DATABASE from silently committing previous commands
in a pipeline.

6c193c2ace Force immediate commit after CREATE DATABASE etc in extended protocol.
We have a few commands that "can't run in a transaction block",
meaning that if they complete their processing but then we fail
to COMMIT, we'll be left with inconsistent on-disk state.
However, the existing defenses for this are only watertight for
simple query protocol.  In extended protocol, we didn't commit
until receiving a Sync message.  Since the client is allowed to
issue another command instead of Sync, we're in trouble if that
command fails or is an explicit ROLLBACK.  In any case, sitting
in an inconsistent state while waiting for a client message
that might not come seems pretty risky.

This case wasn't reachable via libpq before we introduced pipeline
mode, but it's always been an intended aspect of extended query
protocol, and likely there are other clients that could reach it
before.

To fix, set a flag in PreventInTransactionBlock that tells
exec_execute_message to force an immediate commit.  This seems
to be the approach that does least damage to existing working
cases while still preventing the undesirable outcomes.

While here, add some documentation to protocol.sgml that explicitly
says how to use pipelining.  That's latent in the existing docs if
you know what to look for, but it's better to spell it out; and it
provides a place to document this new behavior.

Per bug #17434 from Yugo Nagata.  It's been wrong for ages,
so back-patch to all supported branches.

78f058411b Doc: improve protocol spec for logical replication Type messages.
protocol.sgml documented the layout for Type messages, but completely
dropped the ball otherwise, failing to explain what they are, when
they are sent, or what they're good for.  While at it, do a little
copy-editing on the description of Relation messages.

In passing, adjust the comment for apply_handle_type() to make it
clearer that we choose not to do anything when receiving a Type
message, not that we think it has no use whatsoever.

844b316920 libpq: reject extraneous data after SSL or GSS encryption handshake.
libpq collects up to a bufferload of data whenever it reads data from
the socket.  When SSL or GSS encryption is requested during startup,
any additional data received with the server's yes-or-no reply
remained in the buffer, and would be treated as already-decrypted data
once the encryption handshake completed.  Thus, a man-in-the-middle
with the ability to inject data into the TCP connection could stuff
some cleartext data into the start of a supposedly encryption-protected
database session.

This could probably be abused to inject faked responses to the
client's first few queries, although other details of libpq's behavior
make that harder than it sounds.  A different line of attack is to
exfiltrate the client's password, or other sensitive data that might
be sent early in the session.  That has been shown to be possible with
a server vulnerable to CVE-2021-23214.

To fix, throw a protocol-violation error if the internal buffer
is not empty after the encryption handshake.

c1c88bf03e Fix assorted issues in backend's GSSAPI encryption support.
Unrecoverable errors detected by GSSAPI encryption can't just be
reported with elog(ERROR) or elog(FATAL), because attempting to
send the error report to the client is likely to lead to infinite
recursion or loss of protocol sync.  Instead make this code do what
the SSL encryption code has long done, which is to just report any
such failure to the server log (with elevel COMMERROR), then pretend
we've lost the connection by returning errno = ECONNRESET.

Along the way, fix confusion about whether message translation is done
by pg_GSS_error() or its callers (the latter should do it), and make
the backend version of that function work more like the frontend
version.

Avoid allocating the port->gss struct until it's needed; we surely
don't need to allocate it in the postmaster.

Improve logging of "connection authorized" messages with GSS enabled.
(As part of this, I back-patched the code changes from dc11f31a1.)

Make BackendStatusShmemSize() account for the GSS-related space that
will be allocated by CreateSharedBackendStatus().  This omission
could possibly cause out-of-shared-memory problems with very high
max_connections settings.

Remove arbitrary, pointless restriction that only GSS authentication
can be used on a GSS-encrypted connection.

Improve documentation; notably, document the fact that libpq now
prefers GSS encryption over SSL encryption if both are possible.

Per report from Mikael Gustavsson.  Back-patch to v12 where
this code was introduced.

33acc6bc87 Misc documentation fixes.
- Misc grammar and punctuation fixes.

- Stylistic cleanup: use spaces between function arguments and JSON fields
  in examples. For example "foo(a,b)" -> "foo(a, b)". Add semicolon after
  last END in a few PL/pgSQL examples that were missing them.

- Make sentence that talked about "..." and ".." operators more clear,
  by avoiding to end the sentence with "..". That makes it look the same
  as "..."

- Fix syntax description for HAVING: HAVING conditions cannot be repeated

72e43fc313 Restore replication protocol's duplicate command tags
I removed the duplicate command tags for START_REPLICATION inadvertently
in commit 07082b08cc, but the replication protocol requires them.  The
fact that the replication protocol was broken was not noticed because
all our test cases use an optimized code path that exits early, failing
to verify that the behavior is correct for non-optimized cases.  Put
them back.

Also document this protocol quirk.

Add a test case that shows the failure.  It might still succeed even
without the patch when run on a fast enough server, but it suffices to
show the bug in enough cases that it would be noticed in buildfarm.

a2ac73e7be Code review for backup manifest.
This commit prevents pg_basebackup from receiving backup_manifest file
when --no-manifest is specified. Previously, when pg_basebackup was
writing a tarfile to stdout, it tried to receive backup_manifest file even
when --no-manifest was specified, and reported an error.

Also remove unused -m option from pg_basebackup.

Also fix typo in BASE_BACKUP command documentation.

0d8c9c1210 Generate backup manifests for base backups, and validate them.
A manifest is a JSON document which includes (1) the file name, size,
last modification time, and an optional checksum for each file backed
up, (2) timelines and LSNs for whatever WAL will need to be replayed
to make the backup consistent, and (3) a checksum for the manifest
itself. By default, we use CRC-32C when checksumming data files,
because we are trying to detect corruption and user error, not foil an
adversary. However, pg_basebackup and the server-side BASE_BACKUP
command now have options to select a different algorithm, so users
wanting a cryptographic hash function can select SHA-224, SHA-256,
SHA-384, or SHA-512. Users not wanting file checksums at all can
disable them, or disable generating of the backup manifest altogether.
Using a cryptographic hash function in place of CRC-32C consumes
significantly more CPU cycles, which may slow down backups in some
cases.

A new tool called pg_validatebackup can validate a backup against the
manifest. If no checksums are present, it can still check that the
right files exist and that they have the expected sizes. If checksums
are present, it can also verify that each file has the expected
checksum. Additionally, it calls pg_waldump to verify that the
expected WAL files are present and parseable. Only plain format
backups can be validated directly, but tar format backups can be
validated after extracting them.

e65497df8f Report progress of streaming base backup.
This commit adds pg_stat_progress_basebackup view that reports
the progress while an application like pg_basebackup is taking
a base backup. This uses the progress reporting infrastructure
added by c16dc1aca5, adding support for streaming base backup.

ac86237603 Fix more typos and inconsistencies in documentation
This fixes a couple of grammar mistakes, typos and inconsistencies in
the documentation.  Particularly, the configuration parsing allows only
"kB" to mean kilobyte but there were references in the docs to "KB".
Some instances of the latter are still in the code comments.  Some
parameter values were mentioned with "Minus-one", and using directly
"-1" with proper markups is more helpful to the reader.

Some of these have been pointed out by Justin, and some others are
things I bumped into.

eb882a1b71 GSSAPI: Improve documentation and tests
The GSSAPI encryption patch neglected to update the protocol
documentation to describe how to set up a GSSAPI encrypted connection
from a client to the server, so fix that by adding the appropriate
documentation to protocol.sgml.

The tests added for encryption support were overly long and couldn't be
run in parallel due to race conditions; this was largely because each
test was setting up its own KDC to perform the tests.  Instead, merge
the authentication tests and the encryption tests into the original
test, where we only create one KDC to run the tests with.  Also, have
the tests check what the server's opinion is of the connection and if it
was GSS authenticated or encrypted using the pg_stat_gssapi view.

In passing, fix the libpq label for GSSENC-Mode to be consistent with
the "PGGSSENCMODE" environment variable.

Missing protocol documentation pointed out by Michael Paquier.
Issues with the tests pointed out by Tom Lane and Peter Eisentraut.

Refactored tests and added documentation by me.

fc22b6623b Generated columns
This is an SQL-standard feature that allows creating columns that are
computed from expressions rather than assigned, similar to a view or
materialized view but on a column basis.

This implements one kind of generated column: stored (computed on
write).  Another kind, virtual (computed on read), is planned for the
future, and some room is left for it.

578b229718 Remove WITH OIDS support, change oid catalog column visibility.
Previously tables declared WITH OIDS, including a significant fraction
of the catalog tables, stored the oid column not as a normal column,
but as part of the tuple header.

This special column was not shown by default, which was somewhat odd,
as it's often (consider e.g. pg_class.oid) one of the more important
parts of a row.  Neither pg_dump nor COPY included the contents of the
oid column by default.

The fact that the oid column was not an ordinary column necessitated a
significant amount of special case code to support oid columns. That
already was painful for the existing, but upcoming work aiming to make
table storage pluggable, would have required expanding and duplicating
that "specialness" significantly.

WITH OIDS has been deprecated since 2005 (commit ff02d0a05280e0).
Remove it.

Removing includes:
- CREATE TABLE and ALTER TABLE syntax for declaring the table to be
  WITH OIDS has been removed (WITH (oids[ = true]) will error out)
- pg_dump does not support dumping tables declared WITH OIDS and will
  issue a warning when dumping one (and ignore the oid column).
- restoring an pg_dump archive with pg_restore will warn when
  restoring a table with oid contents (and ignore the oid column)
- COPY will refuse to load binary dump that includes oids.
- pg_upgrade will error out when encountering tables declared WITH
  OIDS, they have to be altered to remove the oid column first.
- Functionality to access the oid of the last inserted row (like
  plpgsql's RESULT_OID, spi's SPI_lastoid, ...) has been removed.

The syntax for declaring a table WITHOUT OIDS (or WITH (oids = false)
for CREATE TABLE) is still supported. While that requires a bit of
support code, it seems unnecessary to break applications / dumps that
do not use oids, and are explicit about not using them.

The biggest user of WITH OID columns was postgres' catalog. This
commit changes all 'magic' oid columns to be columns that are normally
declared and stored. To reduce unnecessary query breakage all the
newly added columns are still named 'oid', even if a table's column
naming scheme would indicate 'reloid' or such.  This obviously
requires adapting a lot code, mostly replacing oid access via
HeapTupleGetOid() with access to the underlying Form_pg_*->oid column.

The bootstrap process now assigns oids for all oid columns in
genbki.pl that do not have an explicit value (starting at the largest
oid previously used), only oids assigned later by oids will be above
FirstBootstrapObjectId. As the oid column now is a normal column the
special bootstrap syntax for oids has been removed.

Oids are not automatically assigned during insertion anymore, all
backend code explicitly assigns oids with GetNewOidWithIndex(). For
the rare case that insertions into the catalog via SQL are called for
the new pg_nextoid() function can be used (which only works on catalog
tables).

The fact that oid columns on system tables are now normal columns
means that they will be included in the set of columns expanded
by * (i.e. SELECT * FROM pg_class will now include the table's oid,
previously it did not). It'd not technically be hard to hide oid
column by default, but that'd mean confusing behavior would either
have to be carried forward forever, or it'd cause breakage down the
line.

While it's not unlikely that further adjustments are needed, the
scope/invasiveness of the patch makes it worthwhile to get merge this
now. It's painful to maintain externally, too complicated to commit
after the code code freeze, and a dependency of a number of other
patches.

77291139c7 Remove support for tls-unique channel binding.
There are some problems with the tls-unique channel binding type. It's not
supported by all SSL libraries, and strictly speaking it's not defined for
TLS 1.3 at all, even though at least in OpenSSL, the functions used for it
still seem to work with TLS 1.3 connections. And since we had no
mechanism to negotiate what channel binding type to use, there would be
awkward interoperability issues if a server only supported some channel
binding types. tls-server-end-point seems feasible to support with any SSL
library, so let's just stick to that.

This removes the scram_channel_binding libpq option altogether, since there
is now only one supported channel binding type.

This also removes all the channel binding tests from the SSL test suite.
They were really just testing the scram_channel_binding option, which
is now gone. Channel binding is used if both client and server support it,
so it is used in the existing tests. It would be good to have some tests
specifically for channel binding, to make sure it really is used, and the
different combinations of a client and a server that support or doesn't
support it. The current set of settings we have make it hard to write such
tests, but I did test those things manually, by disabling
HAVE_BE_TLS_GET_CERTIFICATE_HASH and/or
HAVE_PGTLS_GET_PEER_CERTIFICATE_HASH.

I also removed the SCRAM_CHANNEL_BINDING_TLS_END_POINT constant. This is a
matter of taste, but IMO it's more readable to just use the
"tls-server-end-point" string.

Refactor the checks on whether the SSL library supports the functions
needed for tls-server-end-point channel binding. Now the server won't
advertise, and the client won't choose, the SCRAM-SHA-256-PLUS variant, if
compiled with an OpenSSL version too old to support it.

In the passing, add some sanity checks to check that the chosen SASL
mechanism, SCRAM-SHA-256 or SCRAM-SHA-256-PLUS, matches whether the SCRAM
exchange used channel binding or not. For example, if the client selects
the non-channel-binding variant SCRAM-SHA-256, but in the SCRAM message
uses channel binding anyway. It's harmless from a security point of view,
I believe, and I'm not sure if there are some other conditions that would
cause the connection to fail, but it seems better to be strict about these
things and check explicitly.

039eb6e92f Logical replication support for TRUNCATE
Update the built-in logical replication system to make use of the
previously added logical decoding for TRUNCATE support.  Add the
required truncate callback to pgoutput and a new logical replication
protocol message.

Publications get a new attribute to determine whether to replicate
truncate actions.  When updating a publication via pg_dump from an older
version, this is not set, thus preserving the previous behavior.

4eb77d50c2 Validate page level checksums in base backups
When base backups are run over the replication protocol (for example
using pg_basebackup), verify the checksums of all data blocks if
checksums are enabled. If checksum failures are encountered, log them
as warnings but don't abort the backup.

This becomes the default behaviour in pg_basebackup (provided checksums
are enabled on the server), so add a switch (-k) to disable the checks
if necessary.

3c49c6facb Convert documentation to DocBook XML
Since some preparation work had already been done, the only source
changes left were changing empty-element tags like <xref linkend="foo">
to <xref linkend="foo"/>, and changing the DOCTYPE.

The source files are still named *.sgml, but they are actually XML files
now.  Renaming could be considered later.

In the build system, the intermediate step to convert from SGML to XML
is removed.  Everything is build straight from the source files again.
The OpenSP (or the old SP) package is no longer needed.

The documentation toolchain instructions are updated and are much
simpler now.

ae65f6066d Provide for forward compatibility with future minor protocol versions.
Previously, any attempt to request a 3.x protocol version other than
3.0 would lead to a hard connection failure, which made the minor
protocol version really no different from the major protocol version
and precluded gentle protocol version breaks.  Instead, when the
client requests a 3.x protocol version where x is greater than 0, send
the new NegotiateProtocolVersion message to convey that we support
only 3.0.  This makes it possible to introduce new minor protocol
versions without requiring a connection retry when the server is
older.

In addition, if the startup packet includes name/value pairs where
the name starts with "_pq_.", assume that those are protocol options,
not GUCs.  Include those we don't support (i.e. all of them, at
present) in the NegotiateProtocolVersion message so that the client
knows they were not understood.  This makes it possible for the
client to request previously-unsupported features without bumping
the protocol version at all; the client can tell from the server's
response whether the option was understood.

It will take some time before servers that support these new
facilities become common in the wild; to speed things up and make
things easier for a future 3.1 protocol version, back-patch to all
supported releases.

9288d62bb4 Support channel binding 'tls-unique' in SCRAM
This is the basic feature set using OpenSSL to support the feature.  In
order to allow the frontend and the backend to fetch the sent and
expected TLS Finished messages, a PG-like API is added to be able to
make the interface pluggable for other SSL implementations.

This commit also adds a infrastructure to facilitate the addition of
future channel binding types as well as libpq parameters to control the
SASL mechanism names and channel binding names.  Those will be added by
upcoming commits.

Some tests are added to the SSL test suite to test SCRAM authentication
with channel binding.

be7161566d Add a WAIT option to DROP_REPLICATION_SLOT
Commit 9915de6c1c changed the default behavior of
DROP_REPLICATION_SLOT so that it would wait until any session holding
the slot active would release it, instead of raising an error.  But
users are already depending on the original behavior, so revert to it by
default and add a WAIT option to invoke the new behavior.
