ad8877cb51 Add missing source files to nls.mk
Files in common/ and fe_utils/ that contain translatable strings need
to be listed in the nls.mk files of the programs that use them. (Not
great, but that's the way it works for now.) This usually requires
some manual analysis which is done about once during each major
release beta period. This time, I wrote a hackish script that figures
some of this out more automatically, so this update is a bit larger as
it also includes some files that were missed in the past.

Some of the nls.mk files used different indentation or line breaks
than the majority, which makes editing these files unnecessarily
confusing.

2a71ad64cb Break up long GETTEXT_FILES lists
One file per line seems best. We already did this in some cases.
This adopts the same format everywhere (except in some cases where the
list reasonably fits on one line).

54ba2f0623 Revert "Use wildcards instead of manually-maintained file lists in */nls.mk."
This reverts commit 617d691412.
While I still think the basic idea is attractive, we need to sort
out what happens with built .c files, and there also seem to be
VPATH issues.

617d691412 Use wildcards instead of manually-maintained file lists in */nls.mk.
The backend already used a mechanically-generated list of *.c files,
but everywhere else we had a manually-written-out list of files in
which to seek translatable messages. Commit b0a55e432 contains the
latest in a long line of failures to update those lists. Rather than
manually fix its oversight, let's change to using "$(wildcard *.c)"
in all these nls.mk files.

Many of these files also have manual references to some *.c files
in other directories, most often src/common/. Perhaps we should try
to improve that situation too; but it's a bit less clear how, so for
now just fix the local file references.

88dad06b47 NLS: Put list of available languages into LINGUAS files
This moves the list of available languages from nls.mk into a separate
file called po/LINGUAS. Advantages:

- It keeps the parts notionally managed by programmers (nls.mk)
separate from the parts notionally managed by translators (LINGUAS).

- It's the standard practice recommended by the Gettext manual
  nowadays.

- The Meson build system also supports this layout (and of course
doesn't know anything about our custom nls.mk), so this would enable
sharing the list of languages between the two build systems.

(The MSVC build system currently finds all po files by globbing, so it
is not affected by this change.)

9a374b77fb Improve frontend error logging style.
Get rid of the separate "FATAL" log level, as it was applied
so inconsistently as to be meaningless. This mostly involves
s/pg_log_fatal/pg_log_error/g.

Create a macro pg_fatal() to handle the common use-case of
pg_log_error() immediately followed by exit(1). Various
modules had already invented either this or equivalent macros;
standardize on pg_fatal() and apply it where possible.

Invent the ability to add "detail" and "hint" messages to a
frontend message, much as we have long had in the backend.

Except where rewording was needed to convert existing coding
to detail/hint style, I have (mostly) resisted the temptation
to change existing message wording.

Patch by me. Design and patch reviewed at various stages by
Robert Haas, Kyotaro Horiguchi, Peter Eisentraut and
Daniel Gustafsson.

cc8d415117 Unified logging system for command-line programs
This unifies the various ad hoc logging (message printing, error
printing) systems used throughout the command-line programs.

Features:

- Program name is automatically prefixed.

- Message string does not end with newline. This removes a common
  source of inconsistencies and omissions.

- Additionally, a final newline is automatically stripped, simplifying
use of PQerrorMessage() etc., another common source of mistakes.

- I converted error message strings to use %m where possible.

- As a result of the above several points, more translatable message
strings can be shared between different components and between
frontends and backend, without gratuitous punctuation or whitespace
  differences.

- There is support for setting a "log level". This is not meant to be
user-facing, but can be used internally to implement debug or
  verbose modes.

- Lazy argument evaluation, so no significant overhead if logging at
  some level is disabled.

- Some color in the messages, similar to gcc and clang. Set
PG_COLOR=auto to try it out. Some colors are predefined, but can be
  customized by setting PG_COLORS.

- Common files (common/, fe_utils/, etc.) can handle logging much more
simply by just using one API without worrying too much about the
context of the calling program, requiring callbacks, or having to
  pass "progname" around everywhere.

- Some programs called setvbuf() to make sure that stderr is
unbuffered, even on Windows. But not all programs did that. This
  is now done centrally.

Soft goals:

- Reduces vertical space use and visual complexity of error reporting
  in the source code.

- Encourages more deliberate classification of messages. For example,
in some cases it wasn't clear without analyzing the surrounding code
whether a message was meant as an error or just an info.

- Concepts and terms are vaguely aligned with popular logging
frameworks such as log4j and Python logging.

This is all just about printing stuff out. Nothing affects program
flow (e.g., fatal exits). The uses are just too varied to do that.
Some existing code had wrappers that do some kind of print-and-exit,
and I adapted those.

I tried to keep the output mostly the same, but there is a lot of
historical baggage to unwind and special cases to consider, and I
might not always have succeeded. One significant change is that
pg_rewind used to write all error messages to stdout. That is now
changed to stderr.

f39418e9b3 Switch dependency order of libpgcommon and libpgport
Continuing 63f32f3416, libpgcommon should
depend on libpgport, but not vice versa. But wait_result_to_str() in
wait_error.c depends on pstrdup() in libpgcommon. So move exec.c and
wait_error.c from libpgport to libpgcommon. Also switch the link order
in the place that's actually used by the failing ecpg builds.

The function declarations have been left in port.h for now. That should
perhaps be separated sometime.

8396447cdb Create libpgcommon, and move pg_malloc et al to it
libpgcommon is a new static library to allow sharing code among the
various frontend programs and backend; this lets us eliminate duplicate
implementations of common routines. We avoid libpgport, because that's
intended as a place for porting issues; per discussion, it seems better
to keep them separate.

The first use case, and the only implemented by this patch, is pg_malloc
and friends, which many frontend programs were already using.

At the same time, we can use this to provide palloc emulation functions
for the frontend; this way, some palloc-using files in the backend can
also be used by the frontend cleanly. To do this, we change palloc() in
the backend to be a function instead of a macro on top of
MemoryContextAlloc(). This was previously believed to cause loss of
performance, but this implementation has been tweaked by Tom and Andres
so that on modern compilers it provides a slight improvement over the
previous one.

This lets us clean up some places that were already with
localized hacks.

Most of the pg_malloc/palloc changes in this patch were authored by
Andres Freund. Zoltán Böszörményi also independently provided a form of
that. libpgcommon infrastructure was authored by Álvaro.

9d23a70d51 pg_dump: get rid of die_horribly
The old code was using exit_horribly or die_horribly other depending on
whether it had an ArchiveHandle on which to close the connection or not;
but there were places that were passing a NULL ArchiveHandle to
die_horribly, and other places that used exit_horribly while having an
AH available. So there wasn't all that much consistency.

Improve the situation by keeping only one of the routines, and instead
of having to pass the AH down from the caller, arrange for it to be
present for an on_exit_nicely callback to operate on.
