a2a475b011 Replace get_equal_strategy_number_for_am() by get_equal_strategy_number()
get_equal_strategy_number_for_am() gets the equal strategy number for
an AM.  This currently only supports btree and hash.  In the more
general case, this also depends on the operator class (see for example
GistTranslateStratnum()).  To support that, replace this function with
get_equal_strategy_number() that takes an opclass and derives it from
there.  (This function already existed before as a static function, so
the signature is kept for simplicity.)

This patch is only a refactoring, it doesn't add support for other
index AMs such as gist.  This will be done separately.

321c287351 Improve internal logical replication error for missing equality strategy
This "shouldn't happen", except right now it can with a temporal gist
index (to be fixed soon), because of missing gist support in
get_equal_strategy_number().  But right now, the error is not caught
right away, but instead you get the subsequent error about a "missing
operator 0".  This makes the error more accurate.

3eea7a0c97 Simplify executor's determination of whether to use parallelism.
Our parallel-mode code only works when we are executing a query
in full, so ExecutePlan must disable parallel mode when it is
asked to do partial execution.  The previous logic for this
involved passing down a flag (variously named execute_once or
run_once) from callers of ExecutorRun or PortalRun.  This is
overcomplicated, and unsurprisingly some of the callers didn't
get it right, since it requires keeping state that not all of
them have handy; not to mention that the requirements for it were
undocumented.  That led to assertion failures in some corner
cases.  The only state we really need for this is the existing
QueryDesc.already_executed flag, so let's just put all the
responsibility in ExecutePlan.  (It could have been done in
ExecutorRun too, leading to a slightly shorter patch -- but if
there's ever more than one caller of ExecutePlan, it seems better
to have this logic in the subroutine than the callers.)

This makes those ExecutorRun/PortalRun parameters unnecessary.
In master it seems okay to just remove them, returning the
API for those functions to what it was before parallelism.
Such an API break is clearly not okay in stable branches,
but for them we can just leave the parameters in place after
documenting that they do nothing.

Per report from Yugo Nagata, who also reviewed and tested
this patch.  Back-patch to all supported branches.

5668a857de Fix right-semi-joins in HashJoin rescans
When resetting a HashJoin node for rescans, if it is a single-batch
join and there are no parameter changes for the inner subnode, we can
just reuse the existing hash table without rebuilding it.  However,
for join types that depend on the inner-tuple match flags in the hash
table, we need to reset these match flags to avoid incorrect results.
This applies to right, right-anti, right-semi, and full joins.

When I introduced "Right Semi Join" plan shapes in aa86129e1, I failed
to reset the match flags in the hash table for right-semi joins in
rescans.  This oversight has been shown to produce incorrect results.
This patch fixes it.

1fe5a347e3 Fix possible crash during WindowAgg evaluation
When short-circuiting WindowAgg node evaluation on the top-level
WindowAgg node using quals on monotonic window functions, because the
WindowAgg run condition can mean there's no need to evaluate subsequent
window function results in the same partition once the run condition
becomes false, it was possible that the executor would use stale results
from the previous invocation of the window function in some cases.

A fix for this was partially done by a5832722, but that commit only
fixed the issue for non-top-level WindowAgg nodes.  I mistakenly thought
that the top-level WindowAgg didn't have this issue, but Jayesh's example
case clearly shows that's incorrect.  At the time, I also thought that
this only affected 32-bit systems as all window functions which then
supported run conditions returned BIGINT, however, that's wrong as
ExecProject is still called and that could cause evaluation of any other
window function belonging to the same WindowAgg node, one of which may
return a byref type.

The only queries affected by this are WindowAggs with a "Run Condition"
which contains at least one window function with a byref result type,
such as lead() or lag() on a byref column.  The window clause must also
contain a PARTITION BY clause (without a PARTITION BY, execution of the
WindowAgg stops immediately when the run condition becomes false and
there's no risk of using the stale results).

87ce27de69 Ensure stored generated columns must be published when required.
Ensure stored generated columns that are part of REPLICA IDENTITY must be
published explicitly for UPDATE and DELETE operations to be published. We
can publish generated columns by listing them in the column list or by
enabling the publish_generated_columns option.

This commit changes the behavior of the test added in commit adedf54e65 by
giving an ERROR for the UPDATE operation in such cases. There is no way to
trigger the bug reported in commit adedf54e65 but we didn't remove the
corresponding code change because it is still relevant when replicating
changes from a publisher with version less than 18.

We decided not to backpatch this behavior change to avoid the risk of
breaking existing output plugins that may be sending generated columns by
default although we are not aware of any such plugin. Also, we didn't see
any reports related to this on STABLE branches which is another reason not
to backpatch this change.

Quite a large number of buildfarm members didn't like this commit and
it's not yet clear why.  Reverting this before too many animals turn
red.

d28dff3f6c Introduce CompactAttribute array in TupleDesc
The new compact_attrs array stores a few select fields from
FormData_pg_attribute in a more compact way, using only 16 bytes per
column instead of the 104 bytes that FormData_pg_attribute uses.  Using
CompactAttribute allows performance-critical operations such as tuple
deformation to be performed without looking at the FormData_pg_attribute
element in TupleDesc which means fewer cacheline accesses.  With this
change, NAMEDATALEN could be increased with a much smaller negative impact
on performance.

For some workloads, tuple deformation can be the most CPU intensive part
of processing the query.  Some testing with 16 columns on a table
where the first column is variable length showed around a 10% increase in
transactions per second for an OLAP type query performing aggregation on
the 16th column.  However, in certain cases, the increases were much
higher, up to ~25% on one AMD Zen4 machine.

This also makes pg_attribute.attcacheoff redundant.  A follow-on commit
will remove it, thus shrinking the FormData_pg_attribute struct by 4
bytes.

5b8728cd7f Fix NULLIF()'s handling of read-write expanded objects.
If passed a read-write expanded object pointer, the EEOP_NULLIF
code would hand that same pointer to the equality function
and then (unless equality was reported) also return the same
pointer as its value.  This is no good, because a function that
receives a read-write expanded object pointer is fully entitled
to scribble on or even delete the object, thus corrupting the
NULLIF output.  (This problem is likely unobservable with the
equality functions provided in core Postgres, but it's easy to
demonstrate with one coded in plpgsql.)

To fix, make sure the pointer passed to the equality function
is read-only.  We can still return the original read-write
pointer as the NULLIF result, allowing optimization of later
operations.

Per bug #18722 from Alexander Lakhin.  This has been wrong
since we invented expanded objects, so back-patch to all
supported branches.

cd7ab57532 Ensure cached plans are correctly marked as dependent on role.
If a CTE, subquery, sublink, security invoker view, or coercion
projection references a table with row-level security policies, we
neglected to mark the plan as potentially dependent on which role
is executing it.  This could lead to later executions in the same
session returning or hiding rows that should have been hidden or
returned instead.

e7a9496de9 Add two attributes to pg_stat_database for parallel workers activity
Two attributes are added to pg_stat_database:
* parallel_workers_to_launch, counting the total number of parallel
workers that were planned to be launched.
* parallel_workers_launched, counting the total number of parallel
workers actually launched.

The ratio of both fields can provide hints that there are not enough
slots available when launching parallel workers, also useful when
pg_stat_statements is not deployed on an instance (i.e. cf54a2c002).

This commit relies on de3a2ea3b2, that has added two fields to EState,
that get incremented when executing Gather or GatherMerge nodes.

A test is added in select_parallel, where parallel workers are spawned.

Bump catalog version.

b8df690492 Improve fix for not entering parallel mode when holding interrupts.
Commit ac04aa84a put the shutoff for this into the planner, which is
not ideal because it doesn't prevent us from re-using a previously
made parallel plan.  Revert the planner change and instead put the
shutoff into InitializeParallelDSM, modeling it on the existing code
there for recovering from failure to allocate a DSM segment.

However, that code path is mostly untested, and testing a bit harder
showed there's at least one bug: ExecHashJoinReInitializeDSM is not
prepared for us to have skipped doing parallel DSM setup.  I also
thought the Assert in ReinitializeParallelWorkers is pretty
ill-advised, and replaced it with a silent Min() operation.

The existing test case added by ac04aa84a serves fine to test this
version of the fix, so no change needed there.

Patch by me, but thanks to Noah Misch for the core idea that we
could shut off worker creation when !INTERRUPTS_CAN_BE_PROCESSED.
Back-patch to v12, as ac04aa84a was.

87f81a5563 Fix hypothetical bug in ExprState building for hashing
adf97c156 gave ExprStates the ability to hash expressions and return a
single hash value.  That commit supports seeding the hash value with an
initial value to have that blended into the final hash value.

Here we fix a hypothetical bug where if there are zero expressions to
hash, the initial value is stored in the wrong location.  The existing
code stored the initial value in an intermediate location expecting that
when the expressions were hashed that those steps would store the final
hash value in the ExprState.resvalue field.  However, that wouldn't happen
when there are zero expressions to hash.  The correct thing to do instead
is to have a special case for zero expressions and when we hit that case,
store the initial value directly in the ExprState.resvalue.  The reason
that this is a hypothetical bug is that no code currently calls
ExecBuildHash32Expr passing a non-zero initial value.

3974bc3196 Remove unused field from SubPlanState struct
bf6c614a2 did some conversion work to use ExprState instead of manually
calling equality functions to check if one set of values is not distinct
from another set.  That patch removed many of the fields that became
redundant as a result of that change, but it forgot to remove
SubPlanState.tab_eq_funcs.  Fix that.

In passing, fix the header comment for TupleHashEntryData to correctly
spell the field name it's talking about.

de380a62b5 Make table_scan_bitmap_next_block() async-friendly
Move all responsibility for indicating a block is exhuasted into
table_scan_bitmap_next_tuple() and advance the main iterator in
heap-specific code. This flow control makes more sense and is a step
toward using the read stream API for bitmap heap scans.

Previously, table_scan_bitmap_next_block() returned false to indicate
table_scan_bitmap_next_tuple() should not be called for the tuples on
the page. This happened both when 1) there were no visible tuples on the
page and 2) when the block returned by the iterator was past the end of
the table. BitmapHeapNext() (generic bitmap table scan code) handled the
case when the bitmap was exhausted.

It makes more sense for table_scan_bitmap_next_tuple() to return false
when there are no visible tuples on the page and
table_scan_bitmap_next_block() to return false when the bitmap is
exhausted or there are no more blocks in the table.

As part of this new design, TBMIterateResults are no longer used as a
flow control mechanism in BitmapHeapNext(), so we removed
table_scan_bitmap_next_tuple's TBMIterateResult parameter.

Note that the prefetch iterator is still saved in the
BitmapHeapScanState node and advanced in generic bitmap table scan code.
This is because 1) it was not necessary to change the prefetch iterator
location to change the flow control in BitmapHeapNext() 2) modifying
prefetch iterator management requires several more steps better split
over multiple commits and 3) the prefetch iterator will be removed once
the read stream API is used.

7bd7aa4d30 Move EXPLAIN counter increment to heapam_scan_bitmap_next_block
Increment the lossy and exact page counters for EXPLAIN of bitmap heap
scans in heapam_scan_bitmap_next_block(). Note that other table AMs will
need to do this as well

Pushing the counters into heapam_scan_bitmap_next_block() is required to
be able to use the read stream API for bitmap heap scans. The bitmap
iterator must be advanced from inside the read stream callback, so
TBMIterateResults cannot be used as a flow control mechanism in
BitmapHeapNext().

11c87216d1 SQL/JSON: Fix some oversights in commit b6e1157e7
The decision in b6e1157e7 to ignore raw_expr when evaluating a
JsonValueExpr was incorrect.  While its value is not ultimately
used (since formatted_expr's value is), failing to initialize it
can lead to problems, for instance,  when the expression tree in
raw_expr contains Aggref nodes, which must be initialized to
ensure the parent Agg node works correctly.

Also, optimize eval_const_expressions_mutator()'s handling of
JsonValueExpr a bit.  Currently, when formatted_expr cannot be folded
into a constant, we end up processing it twice -- once directly in
eval_const_expressions_mutator() and again recursively via
ece_generic_processing().  This recursive processing is required to
handle raw_expr. To avoid the redundant processing of formatted_expr,
we now  process raw_expr directly in eval_const_expressions_mutator().

Finally, update the comment of JsonValueExpr to describe the roles of
raw_expr and formatted_expr more clearly.

98c7c7152d Fix extreme skew detection in Parallel Hash Join.
After repartitioning the inner side of a hash join that would have
exceeded the allowed size, we check if all the tuples from a parent
partition moved to one child partition.  That is evidence that it
contains duplicate keys and later attempts to repartition will also
fail, so we should give up trying to limit memory (for lack of a better
fallback strategy).

A thinko prevented the check from working correctly in partition 0 (the
one that is partially loaded into memory already).  After
repartitioning, we should check for extreme skew if the *parent*
partition's space_exhausted flag was set, not the child partition's.
The consequence was repeated futile repartitioning until per-partition
data exceeded various limits including "ERROR: invalid DSA memory alloc
request size 1811939328", OS allocation failure, or temporary disk space
errors.  (We could also do something about some of those symptoms, but
that's material for separate patches.)

This problem only became likely when PostgreSQL 16 introduced support
for Parallel Hash Right/Full Join, allowing NULL keys into the hash
table.  Repartitioning always leaves NULL in partition 0, no matter how
many times you do it, because the hash value is all zero bits.  That's
unlikely for other hashed values, but they might still have caused
wasted extra effort before giving up.

Back-patch to all supported releases.

9ca67658d1 Don't store intermediate hash values in ExprState->resvalue
adf97c156 made it so ExprStates could support hashing and changed Hash
Join to use that instead of manually extracting Datums from tuples and
hashing them one column at a time.

When hashing multiple columns or expressions, the code added in that
commit stored the intermediate hash value in the ExprState's resvalue
field.  That was a mistake as steps may be injected into the ExprState
between each hashing step that look at or overwrite the stored
intermediate hash value.  EEOP_PARAM_SET is an example of such a step.

Here we fix this by adding a new dedicated field for storing
intermediate hash values and adjust the code so that all apart from the
final hashing step store their result in the intermediate field.

In passing, rename a variable so that it's more aligned to the
surrounding code and also so a few lines stay within the 80 char margin.

c96de42c4b Further refine _SPI_execute_plan's rule for atomic execution.
Commit 2dc1deaea turns out to have been still a brick shy of a load,
because CALL statements executing within a plpgsql exception block
could still pass the wrong snapshot to stable functions within the
CALL's argument list.  That happened because standard_ProcessUtility
forces isAtomicContext to true if IsTransactionBlock is true, which
it always will be inside a subtransaction.  Then ExecuteCallStmt
would think it does not need to push a new snapshot --- but
_SPI_execute_plan didn't do so either, since it thought it was in
nonatomic mode.

The best fix for this seems to be for _SPI_execute_plan to operate
in atomic execution mode if IsSubTransaction() is true, even when the
SPI context as a whole is non-atomic.  This makes _SPI_execute_plan
have the same rules about when non-atomic execution is allowed as
_SPI_commit/_SPI_rollback have about when COMMIT/ROLLBACK are allowed,
which seems appropriately symmetric.  (If anyone ever tries to allow
COMMIT/ROLLBACK inside a subtransaction, this would all need to be
rethought ... but I'm unconvinced that such a thing could be logically
consistent at all.)

For further consistency, also check IsSubTransaction() in
SPI_inside_nonatomic_context.  That does not matter for its
one present-day caller StartTransaction, which can't be reached
inside a subtransaction.  But if any other callers ever arise,
they'd presumably want this definition.

Per bug #18656 from Alexander Alehin.  Back-patch to all
supported branches, like previous fixes in this area.

c594f1ad2b Track scan reversals in MergeJoin
The MergeJoin struct was tracking "mergeStrategies", which were an
array of btree strategy numbers, purely for the purpose of comparing
it later against btree strategies to determine if the scan direction
was forward or reverse.  Change that.  Instead, track
"mergeReversals", an array of bool, to indicate the same without an
unfortunate assumption that a strategy number refers specifically to a
btree strategy.

de3a2ea3b2 Introduce two fields in EState to track parallel worker activity
These fields can be set by executor nodes to record how many parallel
workers were planned to be launched and how many of them have been
actually launched within the number initially planned.  This data is
able to give an approximation of the parallel worker draught a system

4dd3087300 Remove assertion checking query ID in execMain.c
This assertion has been added by 24f5205948, but Alexander Lakhin has
proved that the ExecutorRun() one can be broken by using a PL function
that manipulates compute_query_id and track_activities, while the ones
in ExecutorFinish() and ExecutorEnd() could be triggered when cleaning
up portals at the beginning of a new query execution.

5deb56387e Expand assertion check for query ID reporting in executor
As formulated, the assertion added in the executor by 24f5205948 to
check that a query ID is set had two problems:
- track_activities may be disabled while compute_query_id is enabled,
causing the query ID to not be reported to pg_stat_activity.
- debug_query_string may not be set in some context.  The only path
where this would matter is visibly autovacuum, should parallel workers
be enabled there at some point.  This is not the case currently.

There was no test showing the interactions between the query ID and
track_activities, so let's add one based on a scan of pg_stat_activity.
This assertion is still an experimentation at this stage, but let's see
if this shows more paths where query IDs are not properly set while they
should.

aac2c9b4fd For inplace update durability, make heap_update() callers wait.
The previous commit fixed some ways of losing an inplace update.  It
remained possible to lose one when a backend working toward a
heap_update() copied a tuple into memory just before inplace update of
that tuple.  In catalogs eligible for inplace update, use LOCKTAG_TUPLE
to govern admission to the steps of copying an old tuple, modifying it,
and issuing heap_update().  This includes MERGE commands.  To avoid
changing most of the pg_class DDL, don't require LOCKTAG_TUPLE when
holding a relation lock sufficient to exclude inplace updaters.
Back-patch to v12 (all supported versions).  In v13 and v12, "UPDATE
pg_class" or "UPDATE pg_database" can still lose an inplace update.  The
v14+ UPDATE fix needs commit 86dc90056d,
and it wasn't worth reimplementing that fix without such infrastructure.

5d56d07ca3 Optimize tuplestore usage for WITH RECURSIVE CTEs
nodeRecursiveunion.c makes use of two tuplestores and, until now, would
delete and recreate one of these tuplestores after every recursive
iteration.

Here we adjust that behavior and instead reuse one of the existing
tuplestores and just empty it of all tuples using tuplestore_clear().

This saves some free/malloc roundtrips and has shown a 25-30% performance
improvement for queries that perform very little work between recursive
iterations.

This also paves the way to add some EXPLAIN ANALYZE telemetry output for
recursive common table expressions, similar to what was done in 1eff8279d
and 95d6e9af0.  Previously calling tuplestore_end() would have caused
the maximum storage space used to be lost.

24f5205948 Add some sanity checks in executor for query ID reporting
This commit adds three sanity checks in code paths of the executor where
it is possible to use hooks, checking that a query ID is reported in
pg_stat_activity if compute_query_id is enabled:
- ExecutorRun()
- ExecutorFinish()
- ExecutorEnd()

This causes the test in pg_stat_statements added in 933848d16d to
complain immediately in ExecutorRun().  The idea behind this commit is
to help extensions to detect if they are missing query ID reports when a
query goes through the executor.  Perhaps this will prove to be a bad
idea, but let's see where this experience goes in v18 and newer
versions.

933848d16d Add missing query ID reporting in extended query protocol
This commit adds query ID reports for two code paths when processing
extended query protocol messages:
- When receiving a bind message, setting it to the first Query retrieved
from a cached cache.
- When receiving an execute message, setting it to the first PlannedStmt
stored in a portal.

An advantage of this method is that this is able to cover all the types
of portals handled in the extended query protocol, particularly these
two when the report done in ExecutorStart() is not enough (neither is an
addition in ExecutorRun(), actually, for the second point):
- Multiple execute messages, with multiple ExecutorRun().
- Portal with execute/fetch messages, like a query with a RETURNING
clause and a fetch size that stores the tuples in a first execute
message going though ExecutorStart() and ExecuteRun(), followed by one
or more execute messages doing only fetches from the tuplestore created
in the first message.  This corresponds to the case where
execute_is_fetch is set, for example.

Note that the query ID reporting done in ExecutorStart() is still
necessary, as an EXECUTE requires it.  Query ID reporting is optimistic
and more calls to pgstat_report_query_id() don't matter as the first
report takes priority except if the report is forced.  The comment in
ExecutorStart() is adjusted to reflect better the reality with the
extended query protocol.

The test added in pg_stat_statements is a courtesy of Robert Haas.  This
uses psql's \bind metacommand, hence this part is backpatched down to
v16.

fc0438b4e8 Add temporal PRIMARY KEY and UNIQUE constraints
Add WITHOUT OVERLAPS clause to PRIMARY KEY and UNIQUE constraints.
These are backed by GiST indexes instead of B-tree indexes, since they
are essentially exclusion constraints with = for the scalar parts of
the key and && for the temporal part.

(previously committed as 46a0cd4cef, reverted by 46a0cd4cefb; the new
part is this:)

Because 'empty' && 'empty' is false, the temporal PK/UQ constraint
allowed duplicates, which is confusing to users and breaks internal
expectations.  For instance, when GROUP BY checks functional
dependencies on the PK, it allows selecting other columns from the
table, but in the presence of duplicate keys you could get the value
from any of their rows.  So we need to forbid empties.

This all means that at the moment we can only support ranges and
multiranges for temporal PK/UQs, unlike the original patch (above).
Documentation and tests for this are added.  But this could
conceivably be extended by introducing some more general support for
the notion of "empty" for other types.

908a968612 Optimize WindowAgg's use of tuplestores
When WindowAgg finished one partition of a PARTITION BY, it previously
would call tuplestore_end() to purge all the stored tuples before again
calling tuplestore_begin_heap() and carefully setting up all of the
tuplestore read pointers exactly as required for the given frameOptions.
Since the frameOptions don't change between partitions, this part does
not make much sense.  For queries that had very few rows per partition,
the overhead of this was very large.

It seems much better to create the tuplestore and the read pointers once
and simply call tuplestore_clear() at the end of each partition.
tuplestore_clear() moves all of the read pointers back to the start
position and deletes all the previously stored tuples.

A simple test query with 1 million partitions and 1 tuple per partition
has been shown to run around 40% faster than without this change.  The
additional effort seems to have mostly been spent in malloc/free.

Making this work required adding a new bool field to WindowAggState
which had the unfortunate effect of being the 9th bool field in a group
resulting in the struct being enlarged.  Here we shuffle the fields
around a little so that the two bool fields for runcondition relating
stuff fit into existing padding.  Also, move the "runcondition" field to
be near those.  This frees up enough space with the other bool fields so
that the newly added one fits into the padding bytes.  This was done to
address a very small but apparent performance regression with queries
containing a large number of rows per partition.

19b861f880 Speedup WindowAgg code by moving uncommon code out-of-line
The code to calculate the frame offsets is only performed once per scan.
Moving this code out of line gives a small (around 4-5%) speedup when testing
with some CPUs.  Other tested CPUs are indifferent to the change.

9758174e2e Log the conflicts while applying changes in logical replication.
This patch provides the additional logging information in the following
conflict scenarios while applying changes:

insert_exists: Inserting a row that violates a NOT DEFERRABLE unique constraint.
update_differ: Updating a row that was previously modified by another origin.
update_exists: The updated row value violates a NOT DEFERRABLE unique constraint.
update_missing: The tuple to be updated is missing.
delete_differ: Deleting a row that was previously modified by another origin.
delete_missing: The tuple to be deleted is missing.

For insert_exists and update_exists conflicts, the log can include the origin
and commit timestamp details of the conflicting key with track_commit_timestamp
enabled.

update_differ and delete_differ conflicts can only be detected when
track_commit_timestamp is enabled on the subscriber.

We do not offer additional logging for exclusion constraint violations because
these constraints can specify rules that are more complex than simple equality
checks. Resolving such conflicts won't be straightforward. This area can be
further enhanced if required.

adf97c1562 Speed up Hash Join by making ExprStates support hashing
Here we add ExprState support for obtaining a 32-bit hash value from a
list of expressions.  This allows both faster hashing and also JIT
compilation of these expressions.  This is especially useful when hash
joins have multiple join keys as the previous code called ExecEvalExpr on
each hash join key individually and that was inefficient as tuple
deformation would have only taken into account one key at a time, which
could lead to walking the tuple once for each join key.  With the new
code, we'll determine the maximum attribute required and deform the tuple
to that point only once.

Some performance tests done with this change have shown up to a 20%
performance increase of a query containing a Hash Join without JIT
compilation and up to a 26% performance increase when JIT is enabled and
optimization and inlining were performed by the JIT compiler.  The
performance increase with 1 join column was less with a 14% increase
with and without JIT.  This test was done using a fairly small hash
table and a large number of hash probes.  The increase will likely be
less with large tables, especially ones larger than L3 cache as memory
pressure is more likely to be the limiting factor there.

This commit only addresses Hash Joins, but lays expression evaluation
and JIT compilation infrastructure for other hashing needs such as Hash
Aggregate.

8d148bb8b8 Fix edge case in plpgsql's make_callstmt_target().
If the plancache entry for the CALL statement is already stale,
it's possible for us to fetch an old procedure OID out of it,
and then fail with "cache lookup failed for function NNN".
In ordinary usage this never happens because make_callstmt_target
is called just once immediately after building the plancache
entry.  It can be forced however by setting up an erroneous CALL
(that causes make_callstmt_target itself to report an error),
then dropping/recreating the target procedure, then repeating
the erroneous CALL.

To fix, use SPI_plan_get_cached_plan() to fetch the plancache's
plan, rather than assuming we can use SPI_plan_get_plan_sources().
This shouldn't add any noticeable overhead in the normal case,
and in the stale-plan case we'd have had to replan anyway a little
further down.

The other callers of SPI_plan_get_plan_sources() seem OK, because
either they don't need up-to-date plans or they know that the
query was just (re) planned.  But add some commentary in hopes
of not falling into this trap again.

Per bug #18574 from Song Hongyu.  Back-patch to v14 where this coding
was introduced.  (Older branches have comparable code, but it's run
after any required replanning, so there's no issue.)

a7f107df2b Evaluate arguments of correlated SubPlans in the referencing ExprState
Until now we generated an ExprState for each parameter to a SubPlan and
evaluated them one-by-one ExecScanSubPlan. That's sub-optimal as creating lots
of small ExprStates
a) makes JIT compilation more expensive
b) wastes memory
c) is a bit slower to execute

This commit arranges to evaluate parameters to a SubPlan as part of the
ExprState referencing a SubPlan, using the new EEOP_PARAM_SET expression
step. We emit one EEOP_PARAM_SET for each argument to a subplan, just before
the EEOP_SUBPLAN step.

It likely is worth using EEOP_PARAM_SET in other places as well, e.g. for
SubPlan outputs, nestloop parameters and - more ambitiously - to get rid of
ExprContext->domainValue/caseValue/ecxt_agg*.  But that's for later.

7f56eaff2f SQL/JSON: Fix casting for integer EXISTS columns in JSON_TABLE
The current method of coercing the boolean result value of
JsonPathExists() to the target type specified for an EXISTS column,
which is to call the type's input function via json_populate_type(),
leads to an error when the target type is integer, because the
integer input function doesn't recognize boolean literal values as
valid.

Instead use the boolean-to-integer cast function for coercion in that
case so that using integer or domains thereof as type for EXISTS
columns works. Note that coercion for ON ERROR values TRUE and FALSE
already works like that because the parser creates a cast expression
including the cast function, but the coercion of the actual result
value is not handled by the parser.

c145f321b6 Propagate query IDs of utility statements in functions
For utility statements defined within a function, the query tree is
copied to a PlannedStmt as utility commands do not require planning.
However, the query ID was missing from the information passed down.

This leads to plugins relying on the query ID like pg_stat_statements to
not be able to track utility statements within function calls.  Tests
are added to check this behavior, depending on pg_stat_statements.track.

This is an old bug.  Now, query IDs for utilities are compiled using
their parsed trees rather than the query string since v16
(3db72ebcbe), leading to less bloat with utilities, so backpatch down
only to this version.

5a1e6df3b8 Show Parallel Bitmap Heap Scan worker stats in EXPLAIN ANALYZE
Nodes like Memoize report the cache stats for each parallel worker, so it
makes sense to show the exact and lossy pages in Parallel Bitmap Heap Scan
in a similar way.  Likewise, Sort shows the method and memory used for
each worker.

There was some discussion on whether the leader stats should include the
totals for each parallel worker or not.  I did some analysis on this to
see what other parallel node types do and it seems only Parallel Hash does
anything like this.  All the rest, per what's supported by
ExecParallelRetrieveInstrumentation() are consistent with each other.

0ffc0acaf3 Fix right-anti-joins when the inner relation is proven unique
For an inner_unique join, we always assume that the executor will stop
scanning for matches after the first match.  Therefore, for a mergejoin
that is inner_unique and whose mergeclauses are sufficient to identify a
match, we set the skip_mark_restore flag to true, indicating that the
executor need not do mark/restore calls.  However, merge-right-anti-join
did not get this memo and continues scanning the inner side for matches
after the first match.  If there are duplicates in the outer scan, we
may incorrectly skip matching some inner tuples, which can lead to wrong
results.

Here we fix this issue by ensuring that merge-right-anti-join also
advances to next outer tuple after the first match in inner_unique
cases.  This also saves cycles by avoiding unnecessary scanning of inner
tuples after the first match.

Although hash-right-anti-join does not suffer from this wrong results
issue, we apply the same change to it as well, to help save cycles for
the same reason.

Per bug #18522 from Antti Lampinen, and bug #18526 from Feliphe Pozzer.
Back-patch to v16 where right-anti-join was introduced.

aa86129e19 Support "Right Semi Join" plan shapes
Hash joins can support semijoin with the LHS input on the right, using
the existing logic for inner join, combined with the assurance that only
the first match for each inner tuple is considered, which can be
achieved by leveraging the HEAP_TUPLE_HAS_MATCH flag.  This can be very
useful in some cases since we may now have the option to hash the
smaller table instead of the larger.

Merge join could likely support "Right Semi Join" too.  However, the
benefit of swapping inputs tends to be small here, so we do not address
that in this patch.

Note that this patch also modifies a test query in join.sql to ensure it
continues testing as intended.  With this patch the original query would
result in a right-semi-join rather than semi-join, compromising its
original purpose of testing the fix for neqjoinsel's behavior for
semi-joins.

716bd12d22 SQL/JSON: Always coerce JsonExpr result at runtime
Instead of looking up casts at parse time for converting the result
of JsonPath* query functions to the specified or the default
RETURNING type, always perform the conversion at runtime using either
the target type's input function or the function
json_populate_type().

There are two motivations for this change:

1. json_populate_type() coerces to types with typmod such that any
   string values that exceed length limit cause an error instead of
   silent truncation, which is necessary to be standard-conforming.

2. It was possible to end up with a cast expression that doesn't
   support soft handling of errors causing bugs in the of handling
   ON ERROR clause.

JsonExpr.coercion_expr which would store the cast expression is no
longer necessary, so remove.

Bump catversion because stored rules change because of the above
removal.

d5f788b41d Expand comments and add an assertion in nodeModifyTable.c.

Fix partition pruning setup during DETACH CONCURRENTLY
When detaching partition in concurrent mode, it's possible for partition
descriptors to not match the set that was recently seen when the plan
was made, causing an assertion failure or (in production builds) failure
to construct a working plan.  The case that was reported involves
prepared statements, but I think it may be possible to hit this bug
without that too.

The problem is that CreatePartitionPruneState is constructing a
PartitionPruneState under the assumption that new partitions can be
added, but never removed, but it turns out that this isn't true: a
prepared statement gets replanned when the DETACH CONCURRENTLY session
sends out its invalidation message, but if the invalidation message
arrives after ExecInitAppend started, we would build a partition
descriptor without the partition, and then CreatePartitionPruneState
would refuse to work with it.

CreatePartitionPruneState already contains code to deal with the new
descriptor having more partitions than before (and behaving for the
extra partitions as if they had been pruned), but doesn't have code to
deal with less partitions than before, and it is naïve about the case
where the number of partitions is the same.  We could simply add that a
new stanza for less partitions than before, and in simple testing it
works to do that; but it's possible to press the test scripts even
further and hit the case where one partition is added and a partition is
removed quickly enough that we see the same number of partitions, but
they don't actually match, causing hangs during execution.

To cope with both these problems, we now memcmp() the arrays of
partition OIDs, and do a more elaborate mapping (relying on the fact
that both OID arrays are in partition-bounds order) if they're not
identical.

This fix was already pushed in backbranches earlier.

0f271e8e8d SQL/JSON: Correct jsonpath variable name matching
Previously, GetJsonPathVar() allowed a jsonpath expression to
reference any prefix of a PASSING variable's name. For example, the
following query would incorrectly work:

SELECT JSON_QUERY(context_item, jsonpath '$xy' PASSING val AS xyz);

The fix ensures that the length of the variable name mentioned in a
jsonpath expression matches exactly with the name of the PASSING
variable before comparing the strings using strncmp().

2dc1deaea0 Fix behavior of stable functions called from a CALL's argument list.
If the CALL is within an atomic context (e.g. there's an outer
transaction block), _SPI_execute_plan should acquire a fresh snapshot
to execute any such functions with.  We failed to do that and instead
passed them the Portal snapshot, which had been acquired at the start
of the current SQL command.  This'd lead to seeing stale values of
rows modified since the start of the command.

This is arguably a bug in 84f5c2908: I failed to see that "are we in
non-atomic mode" needs to be defined the same way as it is further
down in _SPI_execute_plan, i.e. check !_SPI_current->atomic not just
options->allow_nonatomic.  Alternatively the blame could be laid on
plpgsql, which is unconditionally passing allow_nonatomic = true
for CALL/DO even when it knows it's in an atomic context.  However,
fixing it in spi.c seems like a better idea since that will also fix
the problem for any extensions that may have copied plpgsql's coding
pattern.

While here, update an obsolete comment about _SPI_execute_plan's
snapshot management.

144c2ce0cc Fix ON CONFLICT DO NOTHING/UPDATE for temporal indexes
A PRIMARY KEY or UNIQUE constraint with WITHOUT OVERLAPS will be a
GiST index, not a B-Tree, but it will still have indisunique set.  The
code for ON CONFLICT fails if it sees a non-btree index that has
indisunique.  This commit fixes that and adds some tests.  But now
that we can't just test indisunique, we also need some extra checks to
prevent DO UPDATE from running against a WITHOUT OVERLAPS constraint
(because the conflict could happen against more than one row, and we'd
only update one).

a63224be49 Ensure we allocate NAMEDATALEN bytes for names in Index Only Scans
As an optimization, we store "name" columns as cstrings in btree
indexes.

Here we modify it so that Index Only Scans convert these cstrings back
to names with NAMEDATALEN bytes rather than storing the cstring in the
tuple slot, as was happening previously.

b7d35d393e Remove some unnecessary fields from executor nodes.
JsonExprState.input_finfo is only assigned to, never read, and
it's really fairly useless since the value can be gotten out of
the adjacent input_fcinfo field.  Let's remove it before someone
starts to depend on it.

While here, also remove TidScanState.tss_htup and AggState.combinedproj,
which are referenced nowhere.  Those should have been removed by the
commits that caused them to become disused, but were not.

I don't think a catversion bump is necessary here, since plan trees
are never stored on disk.

b4fad46b6b SQL/JSON: Improve some error messages
This improves some error messages emitted by SQL/JSON query functions
by mentioning column name when available, such as when they are
invoked as part of evaluating JSON_TABLE() columns.  To do so, a new
field column_name is added to both JsonFuncExpr and JsonExpr that is
only populated when creating those nodes for transformed JSON_TABLE()
columns.

While at it, relevant error messages are reworded for clarity.

810f64a015 Revert indexed and enlargable binary heap implementation.
This reverts commit b840508644 and bcb14f4abc. These commits were made
for commit 5bec1d6bc5 (Improve eviction algorithm in ReorderBuffer

1fdb0ce9b1 BitmapHeapScan: Use correct recheck flag for skip_fetch
As of 7c70996ebf, BitmapPrefetch() used the recheck flag for
the current block to determine whether or not it should skip prefetching
the proposed prefetch block. As explained in the comment, this assumed
the index AM will report the same recheck value for the future page as
it did for the current page - but there's no guarantee.

This only affects prefetching - if the recheck flag changes, we may
prefetch blocks unecessarily and not prefetch blocks that will be
needed. But we don't need to rely on that assumption - we know the
recheck flag for the block we're considering prefetching, so we can
use that.

The impact is very limited in practice - the opclass would need to
assign different recheck flags to different blocks, but none of the
built-in opclasses seems to do that.

04e72ed617 BitmapHeapScan: Push skip_fetch optimization into table AM
Commit 7c70996ebf introduced an optimization to allow bitmap
scans to operate like index-only scans by not fetching a block from the
heap if none of the underlying data is needed and the block is marked
all visible in the visibility map.

With the introduction of table AMs, a FIXME was added to this code
indicating that the skip_fetch logic should be pushed into the table
AM-specific code, as not all table AMs may use a visibility map in the
same way.

This commit resolves this FIXME for the current block. The layering
violation is still present in BitmapHeapScans's prefetching code, which
uses the visibility map to decide whether or not to prefetch a block.
However, this can be addressed independently.

5bf748b86b Enhance nbtree ScalarArrayOp execution.
Commit 9e8da0f7 taught nbtree to handle ScalarArrayOpExpr quals
natively.  This works by pushing down the full context (the array keys)
to the nbtree index AM, enabling it to execute multiple primitive index
scans that the planner treats as one continuous index scan/index path.
This earlier enhancement enabled nbtree ScalarArrayOp index-only scans.
It also allowed scans with ScalarArrayOp quals to return ordered results
(with some notable restrictions, described further down).

Take this general approach a lot further: teach nbtree SAOP index scans
to decide how to execute ScalarArrayOp scans (when and where to start
the next primitive index scan) based on physical index characteristics.
This can be far more efficient.  All SAOP scans will now reliably avoid
duplicative leaf page accesses (just like any other nbtree index scan).
SAOP scans whose array keys are naturally clustered together now require
far fewer index descents, since we'll reliably avoid starting a new
primitive scan just to get to a later offset from the same leaf page.

The scan's arrays now advance using binary searches for the array
element that best matches the next tuple's attribute value.  Required
scan key arrays (i.e. arrays from scan keys that can terminate the scan)
ratchet forward in lockstep with the index scan.  Non-required arrays
(i.e. arrays from scan keys that can only exclude non-matching tuples)
"advance" without the process ever rolling over to a higher-order array.

Naturally, only required SAOP scan keys trigger skipping over leaf pages
(non-required arrays cannot safely end or start primitive index scans).
Consequently, even index scans of a composite index with a high-order
inequality scan key (which we'll mark required) and a low-order SAOP
scan key (which we won't mark required) now avoid repeating leaf page
accesses -- that benefit isn't limited to simpler equality-only cases.
In general, all nbtree index scans now output tuples as if they were one
continuous index scan -- even scans that mix a high-order inequality
with lower-order SAOP equalities reliably output tuples in index order.
This allows us to remove a couple of special cases that were applied
when building index paths with SAOP clauses during planning.

Bugfix commit 807a40c5 taught the planner to avoid generating unsafe
path keys: path keys on a multicolumn index path, with a SAOP clause on
any attribute beyond the first/most significant attribute.  These cases
are now all safe, so we go back to generating path keys without regard
for the presence of SAOP clauses (just like with any other clause type).
Affected queries can now exploit scan output order in all the usual ways
(e.g., certain "ORDER BY ... LIMIT n" queries can now terminate early).

Also undo changes from follow-up bugfix commit a4523c5a, which taught
the planner to produce alternative index paths, with path keys, but
without low-order SAOP index quals (filter quals were used instead).
We'll no longer generate these alternative paths, since they can no
longer offer any meaningful advantages over standard index qual paths.
Affected queries thereby avoid all of the disadvantages that come from
using filter quals within index scan nodes.  They can avoid extra heap
page accesses from using filter quals to exclude non-matching tuples
(index quals will never have that problem).  They can also skip over
irrelevant sections of the index in more cases (though only when nbtree
determines that starting another primitive scan actually makes sense).

There is a theoretical risk that removing restrictions on SAOP index
paths from the planner will break compatibility with amcanorder-based
index AMs maintained as extensions.  Such an index AM could have the

de3600452b Add basic JSON_TABLE() functionality
JSON_TABLE() allows JSON data to be converted into a relational view
and thus used, for example, in a FROM clause, like other tabular
data.  Data to show in the view is selected from a source JSON object
using a JSON path expression to get a sequence of JSON objects that's
called a "row pattern", which becomes the source to compute the
SQL/JSON values that populate the view's output columns.  Column
values themselves are computed using JSON path expressions applied to
each of the JSON objects comprising the "row pattern", for which the
SQL/JSON query functions added in 6185c9737c are used.

To implement JSON_TABLE() as a table function, this augments the
TableFunc and TableFuncScanState nodes that are currently used to
support XMLTABLE() with some JSON_TABLE()-specific fields.

Note that the JSON_TABLE() spec includes NESTED COLUMNS and PLAN
clauses, which are required to provide more flexibility to extract
data out of nested JSON objects, but they are not implemented here
to keep this commit of manageable size.

b840508644 Add functions to binaryheap for efficient key removal and update.
Previously, binaryheap didn't support updating a key and removing a
node in an efficient way. For example, in order to remove a node from
the binaryheap, the caller had to pass the node's position within the
array that the binaryheap internally has. Removing a node from the
binaryheap is done in O(log n) but searching for the key's position is
done in O(n).

This commit adds a hash table to binaryheap in order to track the
position of each nodes in the binaryheap. That way, by using newly
added functions such as binaryheap_update_up() etc., both updating a
key and removing a node can be done in O(1) on an average and O(log n)
in worst case. This is known as the indexed binary heap. The caller
can specify to use the indexed binaryheap by passing indexed = true.

The current code does not use the new indexing logic, but it will be
used by an upcoming patch.

b1484a3f19 Let table AM insertion methods control index insertion
Previously, the executor did index insert unconditionally after calling
table AM interface methods tuple_insert() and multi_insert().  This commit
introduces the new parameter insert_indexes for these two methods.  Setting
'*insert_indexes' to true saves the current logic.  Setting it to false
indicates that table AM cares about index inserts itself and doesn't want the
caller to do that.

0294df2f1f Add support for MERGE ... WHEN NOT MATCHED BY SOURCE.
This allows MERGE commands to include WHEN NOT MATCHED BY SOURCE
actions, which operate on rows that exist in the target relation, but
not in the data source. These actions can execute UPDATE, DELETE, or
DO NOTHING sub-commands.

This is in contrast to already-supported WHEN NOT MATCHED actions,
which operate on rows that exist in the data source, but not in the
target relation. To make this distinction clearer, such actions may
now be written as WHEN NOT MATCHED BY TARGET.

Writing WHEN NOT MATCHED without specifying BY SOURCE or BY TARGET is
equivalent to writing WHEN NOT MATCHED BY TARGET.

a767cdc84c Fix unnecessary use of moving-aggregate mode with non-moving frame.
When a plain aggregate is used as a window function, and the window
frame start is specified as UNBOUNDED PRECEDING, the frame's head
cannot move so we do not need to use moving-aggregate mode.  The check
for that was put into initialize_peragg(), failing to notice that
ExecInitWindowAgg() calls that function before it's filled in
winstate->frameOptions.  Since makeNode() would have zeroed the field,
this didn't provoke uninitialized-value complaints, nor would the
erroneous decision have resulted in more than a little inefficiency.
Still, it's wrong, so move the initialization of
winstate->frameOptions earlier to make it work properly.

While here, also fix a thinko in a comment.  Both errors crept in in
commit a9d9acbf2 which introduced the moving-aggregate mode.

Spotted by Vallimaharajan G.  Back-patch to all supported branches.

87985cc925 Allow locking updated tuples in tuple_update() and tuple_delete()
Currently, in read committed transaction isolation mode (default), we have the
following sequence of actions when tuple_update()/tuple_delete() finds
the tuple updated by the concurrent transaction.

1. Attempt to update/delete tuple with tuple_update()/tuple_delete(), which
   returns TM_Updated.
2. Lock tuple with tuple_lock().
3. Re-evaluate plan qual (recheck if we still need to update/delete and
   calculate the new tuple for update).
4. Second attempt to update/delete tuple with tuple_update()/tuple_delete().
   This attempt should be successful, since the tuple was previously locked.

This commit eliminates step 2 by taking the lock during the first
tuple_update()/tuple_delete() call.  The heap table access method saves some
effort by checking the updated tuple once instead of twice.  Future
undo-based table access methods, which will start from the latest row version,
can immediately place a lock there.

Also, this commit makes tuple_update()/tuple_delete() optionally save the old
tuple into the dedicated slot.  That saves efforts on re-fetching tuples in
certain cases.

The code in nodeModifyTable.c is simplified by removing the nested switch/case.

6185c9737c Add SQL/JSON query functions
This introduces the following SQL/JSON functions for querying JSON
data using jsonpath expressions:

JSON_EXISTS(), which can be used to apply a jsonpath expression to a
JSON value to check if it yields any values.

JSON_QUERY(), which can be used to to apply a jsonpath expression to
a JSON value to get a JSON object, an array, or a string.  There are
various options to control whether multi-value result uses array
wrappers and whether the singleton scalar strings are quoted or not.

JSON_VALUE(), which can be used to apply a jsonpath expression to a
JSON value to return a single scalar value, producing an error if it
multiple values are matched.

Both JSON_VALUE() and JSON_QUERY() functions have options for
handling EMPTY and ERROR conditions, which can be used to specify
the behavior when no values are matched and when an error occurs
during jsonpath evaluation, respectively.

0960ae1967 Fix EXPLAIN Bitmap heap scan to count pages with no visible tuples
Previously, bitmap heap scans only counted lossy and exact pages for
explain when there was at least one visible tuple on the page.

heapam_scan_bitmap_next_block() returned true only if there was a
"valid" page with tuples to be processed. However, the lossy and exact
page counters in EXPLAIN should count the number of pages represented
in a lossy or non-lossy way in the constructed bitmap, regardless of
whether or not the pages ultimately contained visible tuples.

Backpatch to all supported versions.

c649fa24a4 Add RETURNING support to MERGE.
This allows a RETURNING clause to be appended to a MERGE query, to
return values based on each row inserted, updated, or deleted. As with
plain INSERT, UPDATE, and DELETE commands, the returned values are
based on the new contents of the target table for INSERT and UPDATE
actions, and on its old contents for DELETE actions. Values from the
source relation may also be returned.

As with INSERT/UPDATE/DELETE, the output of MERGE ... RETURNING may be
used as the source relation for other operations such as WITH queries
and COPY commands.

Additionally, a special function merge_action() is provided, which
returns 'INSERT', 'UPDATE', or 'DELETE', depending on the action
executed for each row. The merge_action() function can be used
anywhere in the RETURNING list, including in arbitrary expressions and
subqueries, but it is an error to use it anywhere outside of a MERGE
query's RETURNING list.

84c18acaf6 Remove redundant snapshot copying from parallel leader to workers
The parallel query infrastructure copies the leader backend's active
snapshot to the worker processes. But BitmapHeapScan node also had
bespoken code to pass the snapshot from leader to the worker. That was
redundant, so remove it.

The removed code was analogous to the snapshot serialization in
table_parallelscan_initialize(), but that was the wrong role model. A
parallel bitmap heap scan is more like an independent non-parallel
bitmap heap scan in each parallel worker as far as the table AM is
concerned, because the coordination is done in nodeBitmapHeapscan.c,
and the table AM doesn't need to know anything about it.

This relies on the assumption that es_snapshot ==
GetActiveSnapshot(). That's not a new assumption, things would get
weird if you used the QueryDesc's snapshot for visibility checks in
the scans, but the active snapshot for evaluating quals, for
example. This could use some refactoring and cleanup, but for now,
just add some assertions.

6ee3261e9b Fix confusion about the return rowtype of SQL-language procedures.
There is a very ancient hack in check_sql_fn_retval that allows a
single SELECT targetlist entry of composite type to be taken as
supplying all the output columns of a function returning composite.
(This is grotty and fundamentally ambiguous, but it's really hard
to do nested composite-returning functions without it.)

As far as I know, that doesn't cause any problems in ordinary
functions.  It's disastrous for procedures however.  All procedures
that have any output parameters are labeled with prorettype RECORD,
and the CALL code expects it will get back a record with one column
per output parameter, regardless of whether any of those parameters
is composite.  Doing something else leads to an assertion failure
or core dump.

This is simple enough to fix: we just need to not apply that rule
when considering procedures.  However, that requires adding another
argument to check_sql_fn_retval, which at least in principle might be
getting called by external callers.  Therefore, in the back branches
convert check_sql_fn_retval into an ABI-preserving wrapper around a
new function check_sql_fn_retval_ext.

Per report from Yahor Yuzefovich.  This has been broken since we
implemented procedures, so back-patch to all supported branches.

e629846472 Fix incorrect accessing of pfree'd memory in Memoize
For pass-by-reference types, the code added in 0b053e78b, which aimed to
resolve a memory leak, was overly aggressive in resetting the per-tuple
memory context which could result in pfree'd memory being accessed
resulting in failing to find previously cached results in the hash
table.

What was happening was prepare_probe_slot() was switching to the
per-tuple memory context and calling ExecEvalExpr().  ExecEvalExpr() may
have required a memory allocation.  Both MemoizeHash_hash() and
MemoizeHash_equal() were aggressively resetting the per-tuple context
and after determining the hash value, the context would have gotten reset
before MemoizeHash_equal() was called.  This could have resulted in
MemoizeHash_equal() looking at pfree'd memory.

This is less likely to have caused issues on a production build as some
other allocation would have had to have reused the pfree'd memory to
overwrite it.  Otherwise, the original contents would have been intact.
However, this clearly caused issues on MEMORY_CONTEXT_CHECKING builds.

29ef1dd19b Fix handling of self-modified tuples in MERGE.
When an UPDATE or DELETE action in MERGE returns TM_SelfModified,
there are 2 possible causes:

1). The target tuple was already updated or deleted by the current
    command. This can happen if the target row joins to more than one
    source row, and the SQL standard explicitly says that this must be
    an error.

2). The target tuple was already updated or deleted by a later command
    in the current transaction. This can happen if the tuple is
    modified by a BEFORE trigger or a volatile function used in the
    query, and should be an error for the same reason that it is in a
    plain UPDATE or DELETE command.

In MERGE's primary error handling block, it failed to check for (2),
causing it to return a misleading error message in such cases.

In the secondary error handling block, following a concurrent update
from another session, it failed to check for (1), causing it to
silently ignore target rows joined to more than one source row,
instead of reporting an error.

Fix this, and add tests for both of these cases.

2ed8f9a01e Fix type-checking of RECORD-returning functions in FROM.
In the corner case where a function returning RECORD has been
simplified to a RECORD constant or an inlined ROW() expression,
ExecInitFunctionScan failed to cross-check the function's result
rowtype against the coldeflist provided by the calling query.
That happened because get_expr_result_type is able to extract a
tupdesc from such expressions, which led ExecInitFunctionScan to
ignore the coldeflist.  (Instead, it used the extracted tupdesc
to check the function's output, which of course always succeeds.)

I have not been able to demonstrate any really serious consequences
from this, because if some column of the result is of the wrong
type and is directly referenced by a Var of the calling query,
CheckVarSlotCompatibility will catch it.  However, we definitely do
fail to report the case where the function returns more columns than
the coldeflist expects, and in the converse case where it returns
fewer columns, we get an assert failure (but, seemingly, no worse
results in non-assert builds).

To fix, always build the expected tupdesc from the coldeflist if there
is one, and consult get_expr_result_type only when there isn't one.

Also remove the failing Assert, even though it is no longer reached
after this fix.  It doesn't seem to be adding anything useful, since
later checking will deal with cases with the wrong number of columns.

The only other place I could find that is doing something similar
is inline_set_returning_function.  There's no live bug there because
we cannot be looking at a Const or RowExpr, but for consistency
change that code to agree with ExecInitFunctionScan.

Per report from PetSerAl.  After some debate I've concluded that
this should be back-patched.  There is a small risk that somebody
has been relying on such a case not throwing an error, but I judge
this outweighed by the risk that I've missed some way in which the
failure to cross-check has worse consequences than sketched above.

dbbca2cf29 Remove unused #include's from backend .c files
as determined by include-what-you-use (IWYU)

While IWYU also suggests to *add* a bunch of #include's (which is its
main purpose), this patch does not do that.  In some cases, a more
specific #include replaces another less specific one.

Some manual adjustments of the automatic result:

- IWYU currently doesn't know about includes that provide global
  variable declarations (like -Wmissing-variable-declarations), so
  those includes are being kept manually.

- All includes for port(ability) headers are being kept for now, to
  play it safe.

- No changes of catalog/pg_foo.h to catalog/pg_foo_d.h, to keep the
  patch from exploding in size.

Note that this patch touches just *.c files, so nothing declared in
header files changes in hidden ways.

As a small example, in src/backend/access/transam/rmgr.c, some IWYU
pragma annotations are added to handle a special case there.

ab355e3a88 Redefine backend ID to be an index into the proc array
Previously, backend ID was an index into the ProcState array, in the
shared cache invalidation manager (sinvaladt.c). The entry in the
ProcState array was reserved at backend startup by scanning the array
for a free entry, and that was also when the backend got its backend
ID. Things become slightly simpler if we redefine backend ID to be the
index into the PGPROC array, and directly use it also as an index to
the ProcState array. This uses a little more memory, as we reserve a
few extra slots in the ProcState array for aux processes that don't
need them, but the simplicity is worth it.

Aux processes now also have a backend ID. This simplifies the
reservation of BackendStatusArray and ProcSignal slots.

You can now convert a backend ID into an index into the PGPROC array
simply by subtracting 1. We still use 0-based "pgprocnos" in various
places, for indexes into the PGPROC array, but the only difference now
is that backend IDs start at 1 while pgprocnos start at 0. (The next
commmit will get rid of the term "backend ID" altogether and make
everything 0-based.)

There is still a 'backendId' field in PGPROC, now part of 'vxid' which
encapsulates the backend ID and local transaction ID together. It's
needed for prepared xacts. For regular backends, the backendId is
always equal to pgprocno + 1, but for prepared xact PGPROC entries,
it's the ID of the original backend that processed the transaction.

5f2e179bd3 Support MERGE into updatable views.
This allows the target relation of MERGE to be an auto-updatable or
trigger-updatable view, and includes support for WITH CHECK OPTION,
security barrier views, and security invoker views.

A trigger-updatable view must have INSTEAD OF triggers for every type

An auto-updatable view must not have any INSTEAD OF triggers. Mixing
auto-update and trigger-update actions (i.e., having a partial set of
INSTEAD OF triggers) is not supported.

Rule-updatable views are also not supported, since there is no
rewriter support for non-SELECT rules with MERGE operations.

362de947cd Remove field UpdateContext->updated in nodeModifyTable.c
This field has been redundant ever since it was added by commit
25e777cf8e, which split up ExecUpdate() and ExecDelete() into reusable
pieces. The only place that reads it is ExecMergeMatched(), if the
result from ExecUpdateAct() is TM_Ok. However, all paths through
ExecUpdateAct() that return TM_Ok also set this field to true, so the
return status by itself is sufficient to tell if the update happened.

Removing this field is a modest simplification, and it brings the
UPDATE path in ExecMergeMatched() more into line with ExecUpdate(),
ensuring that ExecUpdateEpilogue() is always called if ExecUpdateAct()
returns TM_Ok, reducing the chance of bugs.

57f59396bb Delay build of Memoize hash table until executor run
Previously this hash table was built during executor startup.  This
could cause long delays in EXPLAIN (without ANALYZE) when the planner
opts to use a large Memoize hash table.

aaaf9449ec Add soft error handling to some expression nodes
This adjusts the code for CoerceViaIO and CoerceToDomain expression
nodes to handle errors softly.

For CoerceViaIo, this adds a new ExprEvalStep opcode
EEOP_IOCOERCE_SAFE, which is implemented in the new accompanying
function ExecEvalCoerceViaIOSafe().  The only difference from
EEOP_IOCOERCE's inline implementation is that the input function
receives an ErrorSaveContext via the function's
FunctionCallInfo.context, which it can use to handle errors softly.

For CoerceToDomain, this simply entails replacing the ereport() in
ExecEvalConstraintNotNull() and ExecEvalConstraintCheck() by
errsave() passing it the ErrorSaveContext passed in the expression's
ExprEvalStep.

In both cases, the ErrorSaveContext to be used is passed by setting
ExprState.escontext to point to it before calling ExecInitExprRec()
on the expression tree whose errors are to be handled softly.

Note that there's no functional change as of this commit as no call
site of ExecInitExprRec() has been changed.  This is intended for
implementing new SQL/JSON expression nodes in future commits.

Extracted from a much larger patch to add SQL/JSON query functions.

14dd0f27d7 Add macros for looping through a List without a ListCell.
Many foreach loops only use the ListCell pointer to retrieve the
content of the cell, like so:

    ListCell   *lc;

    foreach(lc, mylist)
    {
        int         myint = lfirst_int(lc);

        ...
    }

This commit adds a few convenience macros that automatically
declare the loop variable and retrieve the current cell's contents.
This allows us to rewrite the previous loop like this:

    foreach_int(myint, mylist)
    {
        ...
    }

This commit also adjusts a few existing loops in order to add
coverage for the new/adjusted macros.  There is presently no plan
to bulk update all foreach loops, as that could introduce a
significant amount of back-patching pain.  Instead, these macros
are primarily intended for use in new code.

ae69c4fcf1 Fix use of incorrect TupleTableSlot in DISTINCT aggregates
1349d2790 added code to allow DISTINCT and ORDER BY aggregates to work
more efficiently by using presorted input.  That commit added some code
that made use of the AggState's tmpcontext and adjusted the
ecxt_outertuple and ecxt_innertuple slots before checking if the current
row is distinct from the previously seen row.  That code forgot to set the
TupleTableSlots back to what they were originally, which could result in
errors such as:

ERROR:  attribute 1 of type record has wrong type

This only affects aggregate functions which have multiple arguments when
DISTINCT is used.  For example: string_agg(DISTINCT col, ', ')

a0ff37173d Fix BEFORE ROW trigger handling in cross-partition MERGE update.
Fix a bug during MERGE if a cross-partition update is attempted on a
partitioned table with a BEFORE DELETE ROW trigger that returns NULL,
to prevent the update. This would cause an error to be thrown, or an
assert failure in an assert-enabled build.

This was an oversight in 9321c79c86, which failed to properly
distinguish a DELETE prevented by a trigger from one prevented by a
concurrent update. Fix by having ExecDelete() return the TM_Result
status to ExecCrossPartitionUpdate(), so that it can distinguish the
two cases, and make ExecCrossPartitionUpdate() return the TM_Result
status to ExecUpdateAct(), so that it can return the correct status
from a concurrent update.

In addition, ensure that the command tag is correctly updated by
having ExecMergeMatched() pass canSetTag to ExecUpdateAct(), rather
than passing false, so that it updates the command tag if it does a
cross-partition update, making this code path in ExecMergeMatched()
consistent with ExecUpdate().

Per bug #18238 from Alexander Lakhin. Back-patch to v15, where MERGE
was introduced.

d16a0c1e2e Verify that attribute counts match in ExecCopySlot
tts_virtual_copyslot() contained an Assert that checked that the srcslot
contained <= attributes than the dstslot.  This seems to be backwards as
if the srcslot contained fewer attributes then the dstslot could be left
with stale Datum values from the previously stored tuple.  It might make
more sense to allow the source to contain additional attributes and only
copy the leading ones that also exist in the destination, however, that's
not what we're doing here.

Here we just remove the Assert from tts_virtual_copyslot() and add an
Assert to ExecCopySlot() to verify the attribute counts match.  There
does not seem to be any places where the destination contains fewer
attributes, so instead of going to the trouble of making the code
properly handle this, let's just ensure the attribute counts match.  If
this Assert fails then that will indicate that we do have cases that
require us to handle the srcslot with more attributes than the dstslot.
It seems better to only write this code if there's a genuine requirement
for it rather than write it now only to leave it untested.

c1ec02be1d Reuse BrinDesc and BrinRevmap in brininsert
The brininsert code used to initialize (and destroy) BrinDesc and
BrinRevmap for each tuple, which is not free. This patch initializes
these structures only once, and reuses them for all inserts in the same
command. The data is passed through indexInfo->ii_AmCache.

This also introduces an optional AM callback "aminsertcleanup" that
allows performing custom cleanup in case simply pfree-ing ii_AmCache is
not sufficient (which is the case when the cache contains TupleDesc,
Buffers, and so on).

50c67c2019 Use ResourceOwner to track WaitEventSets.
A WaitEventSet holds file descriptors or event handles (on Windows).
If FreeWaitEventSet is not called, those fds or handles are leaked.
Use ResourceOwners to track WaitEventSets, to clean those up
automatically on error.

This was a live bug in async Append nodes, if a FDW's
ForeignAsyncRequest function failed. (In back branches, I will apply a
more localized fix for that based on PG_TRY-PG_FINALLY.)

The added test doesn't check for leaking resources, so it passed even
before this commit. But at least it covers the code path.

In the passing, fix misleading comment on what the 'nevents' argument
to WaitEventSetWait means.

6a72c42fd5 Retire MemoryContextResetAndDeleteChildren() macro.
As of commit eaa5808e8e, MemoryContextResetAndDeleteChildren() is
just a backwards compatibility macro for MemoryContextReset().  Now
that some time has passed, this macro seems more likely to create
confusion.

This commit removes the macro and replaces all remaining uses with
calls to MemoryContextReset().  Any third-party code that use this
macro will need to be adjusted to call MemoryContextReset()
instead.  Since the two have behaved the same way since v9.5, such
adjustments won't produce any behavior changes for all
currently-supported versions of PostgreSQL.

a4f7d33a90 Fix AFTER ROW trigger execution in MERGE cross-partition update.
When executing a MERGE UPDATE action, if the UPDATE is turned into a
cross-partition DELETE then INSERT, do not attempt to invoke AFTER
UPDATE ROW triggers, or any of the other post-update actions in
ExecUpdateEpilogue().

For consistency with a plain UPDATE command, such triggers should not
be fired (and typically fail anyway), and similarly, other post-update
actions, such as WCO/RLS checks should not be executed, and might also
lead to unexpected failures.

Therefore, as with ExecUpdate(), make ExecMergeMatched() return
immediately if ExecUpdateAct() reports that a cross-partition update
was done, to be sure that no further processing is done for that
tuple.

Back-patch to v15, where MERGE was introduced.

237f8765df Fix intra-query memory leak when a SRF returns zero rows.
When looping around after finding that the set-returning function
returned zero rows for the current input tuple, ExecProjectSet
neglected to reset either of the two memory contexts it's
responsible for cleaning out.  Typically this wouldn't cause much
problem, because once the SRF does return at least one row, the
contexts would get reset on the next call.  However, if the SRF
returns no rows for many input tuples in succession, quite a lot
of memory could be transiently consumed.

To fix, make sure we reset both contexts while looping around.

Per bug #18172 from Sergei Kornilov.  Back-patch to all supported
branches.

611806cd72 Add trailing commas to enum definitions
Since C99, there can be a trailing comma after the last value in an
enum definition.  A lot of new code has been introducing this style on
the fly.  Some new patches are now taking an inconsistent approach to
this.  Some add the last comma on the fly if they add a new last
value, some are trying to preserve the existing style in each place,
some are even dropping the last comma if there was one.  We could
nudge this all in a consistent direction if we just add the trailing
commas everywhere once.

I omitted a few places where there was a fixed "last" value that will
always stay last.  I also skipped the header files of libpq and ecpg,
in case people want to use those with older compilers.  There were
also a small number of cases where the enum type wasn't used anywhere
(but the enum values were), which ended up confusing pgindent a bit,
so I left those alone.

387f9ed0a0 Fix problems when a plain-inheritance parent table is excluded.
When an UPDATE/DELETE/MERGE's target table is an old-style
inheritance tree, it's possible for the parent to get excluded
from the plan while some children are not.  (I believe this is
only possible if we can prove that a CHECK ... NO INHERIT
constraint on the parent contradicts the query WHERE clause,
so it's a very unusual case.)  In such a case, ExecInitModifyTable
mistakenly concluded that the first surviving child is the target
table, leading to at least two bugs:

1. The wrong table's statement-level triggers would get fired.

2. In v16 and up, it was possible to fail with "invalid perminfoindex
0 in RTE with relid nnnn" due to the child RTE not having permissions
data included in the query plan.  This was hard to reproduce reliably
because it did not occur unless the update triggered some non-HOT
index updates.

In v14 and up, this is easy to fix by defining ModifyTable.rootRelation
to be the parent RTE in plain inheritance as well as partitioned cases.

While the wrong-triggers bug also appears in older branches, the
relevant code in both the planner and executor is quite a bit
different, so it would take a good deal of effort to develop and
test a suitable patch.  Given the lack of field complaints about the
trigger issue, I'll desist for now.  (Patching v11 for this seems
unwise anyway, given that it will have no more releases after next
month.)

13d00729d4 Rename I/O timing statistics columns to shared_blk_{read|write}_time
These two counters, defined in BufferUsage to track respectively the
time spent while reading and writing blocks have historically only
tracked data related to shared buffers, when track_io_timing is enabled.

An upcoming patch to add specific counters for local buffers will take
advantage of this rename as it has come up that no data is currently
tracked for local buffers, and tracking local and shared buffers using
the same fields would be inconsistent with the treatment done for temp
buffers.  Renaming the existing fields clarifies what the block type of
each stats field is.

pg_stat_statement is updated to reflect the rename.  No extension
version bump is required as 5a3423ad8e has done one, affecting v17~.

d9e46dfb78 Fix runtime partition pruning for HASH partitioned tables
This could only affect HASH partitioned tables with at least 2 partition
key columns.

If partition pruning was delayed until execution and the query contained
an IS NULL qual on one of the partitioned keys, and some subsequent
partitioned key was being compared to a non-Const, then this could result
in a crash due to the incorrect keyno being used to calculate the
stateidx for the expression evaluation code.

Here we fix this by properly skipping partitioned keys which have a
nullkey set.  Effectively, this must be the same as what's going on
inside perform_pruning_base_step().

Sergei Glukhov also provided a patch, but that's not what's being used
here.

1d5caec221 Fix EvalPlanQual rechecking during MERGE.
Under some circumstances, concurrent MERGE operations could lead to
inconsistent results, that varied according the plan chosen. This was
caused by a lack of rowmarks on the source relation, which meant that
EvalPlanQual rechecking was not guaranteed to return the same source
tuples when re-running the join query.

Fix by ensuring that preprocess_rowmarks() sets up PlanRowMarks for
all non-target relations used in MERGE, in the same way that it does
for UPDATE and DELETE.

d060e921ea Remove obsolete executor cleanup code
This commit removes unnecessary ExecExprFreeContext() calls in
ExecEnd* routines because the actual cleanup is managed by
FreeExecutorState(). With no callers remaining for
ExecExprFreeContext(), this commit also removes the function.

This commit also drops redundant ExecClearTuple() calls, because
ExecResetTupleTable() in ExecEndPlan() already takes care of
resetting and dropping all TupleTableSlots initialized with
ExecInitScanTupleSlot() and ExecInitExtraTupleSlot().

After these modifications, the ExecEnd*() routines for ValuesScan,
NamedTuplestoreScan, and WorkTableScan became redundant. So, this
commit removes them.

c2e08b04c9 Fix RLS policy usage in MERGE.
If MERGE executes an UPDATE action on a table with row-level security,
the code incorrectly applied the WITH CHECK clauses from the target
table's INSERT policies to new rows, instead of the clauses from the
table's UPDATE policies. In addition, it failed to check new rows
against the target table's SELECT policies, if SELECT permissions were
required (likely to always be the case).

In addition, if MERGE executes a DO NOTHING action for matched rows,
the code incorrectly applied the USING clauses from the target table's
DELETE policies to existing target tuples. These policies were applied
as checks that would throw an error, if they did not pass.

Fix this, so that a MERGE UPDATE action applies the same RLS policies
as a plain UPDATE query with a WHERE clause, and a DO NOTHING action
does not apply any RLS checks (other than adding clauses from SELECT
policies to the join).

Back-patch to v15, where MERGE was introduced.

03734a7fed Add more SQL/JSON constructor functions
This Patch introduces three SQL standard JSON functions:

JSON()
JSON_SCALAR()
JSON_SERIALIZE()

JSON() produces json values from text, bytea, json or jsonb values,
and has facilitites for handling duplicate keys.

JSON_SCALAR() produces a json value from any scalar sql value,
including json and jsonb.

JSON_SERIALIZE() produces text or bytea from input which containis
or represents json or jsonb;

For the most part these functions don't add any significant new
capabilities, but they will be of use to users wanting standard
compliant JSON handling.

Catversion bumped as this changes ruleutils.c.

d0ce9d0bc7 Remove unnecessary checks for indexes for REPLICA IDENTITY FULL tables.
Previously, when selecting an usable index for update/delete for the
REPLICA IDENTITY FULL table, in IsIndexOnlyExpression(), we used to
check if all index fields are not expressions. However, it was not
necessary, because it is enough to check if only the leftmost index
field is not an expression (and references the remote table column)
and this check has already been done by
RemoteRelContainsLeftMostColumnOnIdx().

This commit removes IsIndexOnlyExpression() and
RemoteRelContainsLeftMostColumnOnIdx() and all checks for usable
indexes for REPLICA IDENTITY FULL tables are now performed by
IsIndexUsableForReplicaIdentityFull().

Backpatch this to remain the code consistent.

edca342434 Allow the use of a hash index on the subscriber during replication.
Commit 89e46da5e5 allowed using BTREE indexes that are neither
PRIMARY KEY nor REPLICA IDENTITY on the subscriber during apply of
update/delete. This patch extends that functionality to also allow HASH
indexes.

We explored supporting other index access methods as well but they don't
have a fixed strategy for equality operation which is required by the
current infrastructure in logical replication to scan the indexes.

b6e1157e7d Don't include CaseTestExpr in JsonValueExpr.formatted_expr
A CaseTestExpr is currently being put into
JsonValueExpr.formatted_expr as placeholder for the result of
evaluating JsonValueExpr.raw_expr, which in turn is evaluated
separately.  Though, there's no need for this indirection if
raw_expr itself can be embedded into formatted_expr and evaluated
as part of evaluating the latter, especially as there is no
special reason to evaluate it separately.  So this commit makes it
so.  As a result, JsonValueExpr.raw_expr no longer needs to be
evaluated in ExecInterpExpr(), eval_const_exprs_mutator() etc. and
is now only used for displaying the original "unformatted"
expression in ruleutils.c.

While at it, this also removes the function makeCaseTestExpr(),
because the code in makeJsonConstructorExpr() looks more readable
without it IMO and isn't used by anyone else either.

Finally, a note is added in the comment above CaseTestExpr's
definition that JsonConstructorExpr is also using it.

98640f960e Fix memory leak in Incremental Sort rescans
The Incremental Sort had a couple issues, resulting in leaking memory
during rescans, possibly triggering OOM. The code had a couple of
related flaws:

1. During rescans, the sort states were reset but then also set to NULL
   (despite the comment saying otherwise). ExecIncrementalSort then
   sees NULL and initializes a new sort state, leaking the memory used
   by the old one.

2. Initializing the sort state also automatically rebuilt the info about
   presorted keys, leaking the already initialized info. presorted_keys
   was also unnecessarily reset to NULL.

43af714def Fix order of operations in ExecEvalFieldStoreDeForm().
If the given composite datum is toasted out-of-line,
DatumGetHeapTupleHeader will perform database accesses to detoast it.
That can invalidate the result of get_cached_rowtype, as documented
(perhaps not plainly enough) in that function's API spec; which leads
to strange errors or crashes when we try to use the TupleDesc to read
the tuple.  In short then, trying to update a field of a composite
column could fail intermittently if the overall column value is wide
enough to require toasting.

We can fix the bug at no cost by just changing the order of
operations, since we don't need the TupleDesc until after detoasting.
(Other callers of get_cached_rowtype appear to get this right already,
so there's only one bug.)

Note that the added regression test case reveals this bug reliably
only with debug_discard_caches/CLOBBER_CACHE_ALWAYS.

Per bug #17994 from Alexander Lakhin.  Sadly, this patch does not fix
the missing-values issue revealed in the bug discussion; we'll need
some more work to cover that.

0f8cfaf892 Retain relkind too in RTE_SUBQUERY entries for views.
47bb9db75 modified the ApplyRetrieveRule()'s conversion of a view's
original RTE_RELATION entry into an RTE_SUBQUERY one to retain relid,
rellockmode, and perminfoindex so that the executor can lock the view
and check its permissions.  It seems better to also retain
relkind for cross-checking that the exception of an
RTE_SUBQUERY entry being allowed to carry relation details only
applies to views, so do so.

Bump catversion because this changes the output format of
RTE_SUBQUERY RTEs.

f24523672d Use per-tuple context in ExecGetAllUpdatedCols
Commit fc22b6623b (generated columns) replaced ExecGetUpdatedCols() with
ExecGetAllUpdatedCols() in a couple places handling UPDATE (triggers and
lock mode). However, ExecGetUpdatedCols() did exec_rt_fetch() while
ExecGetAllUpdatedCols() also allocates memory through bms_union()
without paying attention to the memory context and happened to use the
long-lived ExecutorState, leaking the memory until the end of the query.

The amount of leaked memory is proportional to the number of (updated)
attributes, types of UPDATE triggers, and the number of processed rows
(which for UPDATE ... FROM ... may be much higher than updated rows).

Fixed by switching to the per-tuple context in GetAllUpdatedColumns().
This is fine for all in-core callers, but external callers may need to
copy the result. But we're not aware of any such callers.

Note the issue was introduced by fc22b6623b, but the macros were later
renamed by f50e888990.

Backpatch to 12, where the issue was introduced.

0245f8db36 Pre-beta mechanical code beautification.

This set of diffs is a bit larger than typical.  We've updated to
pg_bsd_indent 2.1.2, which properly indents variable declarations that
have multi-line initialization expressions (the continuation lines are
now indented one tab stop).  We've also updated to perltidy version
20230309 and changed some of its settings, which reduces its desire to
add whitespace to lines to make assignments etc. line up.  Going
forward, that should make for fewer random-seeming changes to existing
code.

70b42f2790 Fix misbehavior of EvalPlanQual checks with multiple result relations.
The idea of EvalPlanQual is that we replace the query's scan of the
result relation with a single injected tuple, and see if we get a
tuple out, thereby implying that the injected tuple still passes the
query quals.  (In join cases, other relations in the query are still
scanned normally.)  This logic was not updated when commit 86dc90056
made it possible for a single DML query plan to have multiple result
relations, when the query target relation has inheritance or partition
children.  We replaced the output for the current result relation
successfully, but other result relations were still scanned normally;
thus, if any other result relation contained a tuple satisfying the
quals, we'd think the EPQ check passed, even if it did not pass for
the injected tuple itself.  This would lead to update or delete
actions getting performed when they should have been skipped due to
a conflicting concurrent update in READ COMMITTED isolation mode.

Fix by blocking all sibling result relations from emitting tuples
during an EvalPlanQual recheck.  In the back branches, the fix is
complicated a bit by the need to not change the size of struct
EPQState (else we'd have ABI-breaking changes in offsets in
struct ModifyTableState).  Like the back-patches of 3f7836ff6
and 4b3e37993, add a separately palloc'd struct to avoid that.
The logic is the same as in HEAD otherwise.

This is only a live bug back to v14 where 86dc90056 came in.
However, I chose to back-patch the test cases further, on the
grounds that this whole area is none too well tested.  I skipped
doing so in v11 though because none of the test applied cleanly,
and it didn't quite seem worth extra work for a branch with only
six months to live.

8c4040edf4 Allocate hash join files in a separate memory context
Should a hash join exceed memory limit, the hashtable is split up into
multiple batches. The number of batches is doubled each time a given
batch is determined not to fit in memory. Each batch file is allocated
with a block-sized buffer for buffering tuples and parallel hash join
has additional sharedtuplestore accessor buffers.

In some pathological cases requiring a lot of batches, often with skewed
data, bad stats, or very large datasets, users can run out-of-memory
solely from the memory overhead of all the batch files' buffers.

Batch files were allocated in the ExecutorState memory context, making
it very hard to identify when this batch explosion was the source of an
OOM. This commit allocates the batch files in a dedicated memory
context, making it easier to identify the cause of an OOM and work to
avoid it.

Based on initial draft by Tomas Vondra, with significant reworks and
improvements by Jehan-Guillaume de Rorthais.

d8c3106bb6 Add back SQLValueFunction for SQL keywords
This is equivalent to a revert of f193883 and fb32748, with the addition
that the declaration of the SQLValueFunction node needs to gain a couple
of node_attr for query jumbling.  The performance impact of removing the
function call inlining is proving to be too huge for some workloads
where these are used.  A worst-case test case of involving only simple
SELECT queries with a SQL keyword is proving to lead to a reduction of
10% in TPS via pgbench and prepared queries on a high-end machine.

None of the tests I ran back for this set of changes saw such a huge
gap, but Alexander Lakhin and Andres Freund have found that this can be
noticeable.  Keeping the older performance would mean to do more
inlining in the executor when using COERCE_SQL_SYNTAX for a function
expression, similarly to what SQLValueFunction does.  This requires more
redesign work and there is little time until 16beta1 is released, so for
now reverting the change is the best way forward, bringing back the
previous performance.

Bump catalog version.

Fix ExecCheckPermissions call in RI_Initial_Check
RI_Initial_Check was setting up a list of RTEPermissionInfo for
ExecCheckPermissions() wrong, and the problem is subtle enough that it
doesn't have any immediate effect in core code.  However, if an
extension is using the ExecutorCheckPerms_hook, then it would get the
wrong parameters and perhaps arrive at a wrong conclusion, or outright
malfunction.  Fix by constructing that list and the RTE list more
honestly.

We also add an assertion check to verify that these lists match.  This
new assertion would have caught this bug.

806fad7573 Fix buffer refcount leak with FDW bulk inserts
The leak would show up when using batch inserts with foreign tables
included in a partition tree, as the slots used in the batch were not
reset once processed.  In order to fix this problem, some
ExecClearTuple() are added to clean up the slots used once a batch is
filled and processed, mapping with the number of slots currently in use
as tracked by the counter ri_NumSlots.

This buffer refcount leak has been introduced in b676ac4 with the
addition of the executor facility to improve bulk inserts for FDWs, so
backpatch down to 14.

Alexander has provided the patch (slightly modified by me).  The test
for postgres_fdw comes from me, based on the test case that the author
has sent in the report.

fce3b26e97 Rename ExecAggTransReparent, and improve its documentation.
The name of this function suggests that it ought to reparent R/W
expanded objects to be children of the persistent aggcontext, instead
of copying them.  In fact it does no such thing, and if you try to
make it do so you will see multiple regression failures.  Rename it
to the less-misleading ExecAggCopyTransValue, and add commentary
about why that attractive-sounding optimization won't work.  Also
adjust comments at call sites, some of which were describing logic
that has since been moved into ExecAggCopyTransValue.

78d5952dd0 Ensure result of an aggregate's finalfunc is made read-only.
The finalfunc might return a read-write expanded object.  If we
de-duplicate multiple call sites for the aggregate, any function(s)
receiving the aggregate result earlier could alter or destroy the
value that reaches the ones called later.  This is a brown-paper-bag
bug in commit 42b746d4c, because we actually considered the need
for read-only-ness but failed to realize that it applied to the case
with a finalfunc as well as the case without.

Per report from Justin Pryzby.  New error in HEAD,
no need for back-patch.

064eb89e83 Fix assignment to array of domain over composite, redux.
Commit 3e310d837 taught isAssignmentIndirectionExpr() to look through
CoerceToDomain nodes.  That's not sufficient, because since commit
04fe805a1 it's been possible for the planner to simplify
CoerceToDomain to RelabelType when the domain has no constraints
to enforce.  So we need to look through RelabelType too.

Per bug #17897 from Alexander Lakhin.  Although 3e310d837 was
back-patched to v11, it seems sufficient to apply this change
to v12 and later, since 04fe805a1 came in in v12.

558c9d75fe Fix PHJ match bit initialization.
Hash join tuples reuse the HOT status bit to indicate match status
during hash join execution. Correct reuse requires clearing the bit in
all tuples. Serial hash join and parallel multi-batch hash join do so
upon inserting the tuple into the hashtable. Single batch parallel hash
join and batch 0 of unexpected multi-batch hash joins forgot to do this.

It hadn't come up before because hashtable tuple match bits are only
used for right and full outer joins and parallel ROJ and FOJ were
unsupported. 11c2d6fdf5 introduced support for parallel ROJ/FOJ but
neglected to ensure the match bits were reset.

b37d051b0e Remove overzealous assertion from PHJ.
We can't assert that we're the only process attached to a barrier after
BarrierArriveAndDetachExceptLast().  Although that'll be true almost
always, a late-starting parallel worker can attach very briefly (that
is, immediately detach after checking the phase) right at that moment.
BarrierArriveAndDetachExceptLast() already contains an assertion like
that, but it holds a spinlock preventing the race.  This thinko caused a
one-off failure on build farm animal chimaera.

1d477a907e Fix row tracking in pg_stat_statements with extended query protocol
pg_stat_statements relies on EState->es_processed to count the number of
rows processed by ExecutorRun().  This proves to be a problem under the
extended query protocol when the result of a query is fetched through
more than one call of ExecutorRun(), as es_processed is reset each time
ExecutorRun() is called.  This causes pg_stat_statements to report the
number of rows calculated in the last execute fetch, rather than the
global sum of all the rows processed.

As pquery.c tells, this is a problem when a portal does not use
holdStore.  For example, DMLs with RETURNING would report a correct
tuple count as these do one execution cycle when the query is first
executed to fill in the portal's store with one ExecutorRun(), feeding
on the portal's store for each follow-up execute fetch depending on the
fetch size requested by the client.

The fix proposed for this issue is simple with the addition of an extra
counter in EState that's preserved across multiple ExecutorRun() calls,
incremented with the value calculated in es_processed.  This approach is
not back-patchable, unfortunately.

Note that libpq does not currently give any way to control the fetch
size when using the extended v3 protocol, meaning that in-core testing
is not possible yet.  This issue can be easily verified with the JDBC
driver, though, with *autocommit disabled*.  Hence, having in-core tests
requires more features, left for future discussion:
- At least two new libpq routines splitting PQsendQueryGuts(), one for
the bind/describe and a second for a series of execute fetches with a
custom fetch size, likely in a fashion similar to what JDBC does.
- A psql meta-command for the execute phase.  This part is not strictly
mandatory, still it could be handy.

16dc2703c5 Support "Right Anti Join" plan shapes.
Merge and hash joins can support antijoin with the non-nullable input
on the right, using very simple combinations of their existing logic
for right join and anti join.  This gives the planner more freedom
about how to order the join.  It's particularly useful for hash join,
since we may now have the option to hash the smaller table instead
of the larger.

SQL/JSON: support the IS JSON predicate
This patch introduces the SQL standard IS JSON predicate. It operates
on text and bytea values representing JSON, as well as on the json and
jsonb types. Each test has IS and IS NOT variants and supports a WITH
UNIQUE KEYS flag. The tests are:

IS JSON [VALUE]
IS JSON ARRAY
IS JSON OBJECT
IS JSON SCALAR

These should be self-explanatory.

The WITH UNIQUE KEYS flag makes these return false when duplicate keys
exist in any object within the value, not necessarily directly contained
in the outermost object.

11c2d6fdf5 Parallel Hash Full Join.
Full and right outer joins were not supported in the initial
implementation of Parallel Hash Join because of deadlock hazards (see
discussion).  Therefore FULL JOIN inhibited parallelism, as the other
join strategies can't do that in parallel either.

Add a new PHJ phase PHJ_BATCH_SCAN that scans for unmatched tuples on
the inner side of one batch's hash table.  For now, sidestep the
deadlock problem by terminating parallelism there.  The last process to
arrive at that phase emits the unmatched tuples, while others detach and
are free to go and work on other batches, if there are any, but
otherwise they finish the join early.

That unfairness is considered acceptable for now, because it's better
than no parallelism at all.  The build and probe phases are run in
parallel, and the new scan-for-unmatched phase, while serial, is usually
applied to the smaller of the two relations and is either limited by
some multiple of work_mem, or it's too big and is partitioned into
batches and then the situation is improved by batch-level parallelism.

554841699f Fix oversights in array manipulation.
The nested-arrays code path in ExecEvalArrayExpr() used palloc to
allocate the result array, whereas every other array-creating function
has used palloc0 since 18c0b4ecc.  This mostly works, but unused bits
past the end of the nulls bitmap may end up undefined.  That causes
valgrind complaints with -DWRITE_READ_PARSE_PLAN_TREES, and could
cause planner misbehavior as cited in 18c0b4ecc.  There seems no very
good reason why we should strive to avoid palloc0 in just this one case,
so fix it the easy way with s/palloc/palloc0/.

While looking at that I noted that we also failed to check for overflow
of "nbytes" and "nitems" while summing the sizes of the sub-arrays,
potentially allowing a crash due to undersized output allocation.
For "nbytes", follow the policy used by other array-munging code of
checking for overflow after each addition.  (As elsewhere, the last
addition of the array's overhead space doesn't need an extra check,
since palloc itself will catch a value between 1Gb and 2Gb.)
For "nitems", there's no very good reason to sum the inputs at all,
since we can perfectly well use ArrayGetNItems' result instead of
ignoring it.

Per discussion of this bug, also remove redundant zeroing of the
nulls bitmap in array_set_element and array_set_slice.

Patch by Alexander Lakhin and myself, per bug #17858 from Alexander
Lakhin; thanks also to Richard Guo.  These bugs are a dozen years old,
so back-patch to all supported branches.

d435f15fff Add SysCacheGetAttrNotNull for guaranteed not-null attrs
When extracting an attr from a cached tuple in the syscache with
SysCacheGetAttr the isnull parameter must be checked in case the
attr cannot be NULL.  For cases when this is known beforehand, a
wrapper is introduced which perform the errorhandling internally
on behalf of the caller, invoking an elog in case of a NULL attr.

3c05284d83 Invent GENERIC_PLAN option for EXPLAIN.
This provides a very simple way to see the generic plan for a
parameterized query.  Without this, it's necessary to define
a prepared statement and temporarily change plan_cache_mode,
which is a bit tedious.

One thing that's a bit of a hack perhaps is that we disable
execution-time partition pruning when the GENERIC_PLAN option
is given.  That's because the pruning code may attempt to
fetch the value of one of the parameters, which would fail.

8fba928fd7 Improve the naming of Parallel Hash Join phases.
* Commit 3048898e dropped -ING from PHJ wait event names.  Update the
  corresponding barrier phases names to match.

* Rename the "DONE" phases to "FREE".  That's symmetrical with
  "ALLOCATE", and names the activity that actually happens in that phase
  (as we do for the other phases) rather than a state.  The bug fixed by
  commit 8d578b9b might have been more obvious with this name.

* Rename the batch/bucket growth barriers' "ALLOCATE" phases to
  "REALLOCATE", a better description of what they do.

* Update the high level comments about phases to highlight phases
  are executed by a single process with an asterisk (mostly memory
  management phases).

No behavior change, as this is just improving internal identifiers.  The
only user-visible sign of this is that a couple of wait events' display
names change from "...Allocate" to "...Reallocate" in pg_stat_activity,
to stay in sync with the internal names.

11470f544e Allow locking updated tuples in tuple_update() and tuple_delete()
Currently, in read committed transaction isolation mode (default), we have the
following sequence of actions when tuple_update()/tuple_delete() finds
the tuple updated by concurrent transaction.

1. Attempt to update/delete tuple with tuple_update()/tuple_delete(), which
   returns TM_Updated.
2. Lock tuple with tuple_lock().
3. Re-evaluate plan qual (recheck if we still need to update/delete and
   calculate the new tuple for update).
4. Second attempt to update/delete tuple with tuple_update()/tuple_delete().
   This attempt should be successful, since the tuple was previously locked.

This patch eliminates step 2 by taking the lock during first
tuple_update()/tuple_delete() call.  Heap table access method saves some
efforts by checking the updated tuple once instead of twice.  Future
undo-based table access methods, which will start from the latest row version,
can immediately place a lock there.

The code in nodeModifyTable.c is simplified by removing the nested switch/case.

When we lock tuple using table_tuple_lock() then we at the same time fetch
the locked tuple to the slot.  In this case we can skip extra

8d578b9b2e Fix race in parallel hash join batch cleanup, take II.
With unlucky timing and parallel_leader_participation=off (not the
default), PHJ could attempt to access per-batch shared state just as it
was being freed.  There was code intended to prevent that by checking
for a cleared pointer, but it was racy.  Fix, by introducing an extra
barrier phase.  The new phase PHJ_BUILD_RUNNING means that it's safe to
access the per-batch state to find a batch to help with, and
PHJ_BUILD_DONE means that it is too late.  The last to detach will free
the array of per-batch state as before, but now it will also atomically
advance the phase, so that late attachers can avoid the hazard.  This
mirrors the way per-batch hash tables are freed (see phases
PHJ_BATCH_PROBING and PHJ_BATCH_DONE).

An earlier attempt to fix this (commit 3b8981b6, later reverted) missed
one special case.  When the inner side is empty (the "empty inner
optimization), the build barrier would only make it to
PHJ_BUILD_HASHING_INNER phase before workers attempted to detach from
the hashtable.  In that case, fast-forward the build barrier to
PHJ_BUILD_RUNNING before proceeding, so that our later assertions hold
and we can still negotiate who is cleaning up.

Revealed by build farm failures, where BarrierAttach() failed a sanity
check assertion, because the memory had been clobbered by dsa_free().
In non-assert builds, the result could be a segmentation fault.

Back-patch to all supported releases.

19d8e2308b Ignore BRIN indexes when checking for HOT updates
When determining whether an index update may be skipped by using HOT, we
can ignore attributes indexed by block summarizing indexes without
references to individual tuples that need to be cleaned up.

A new type TU_UpdateIndexes provides a signal to the executor to
determine which indexes to update - no indexes, all indexes, or only the
summarizing indexes.

This also removes rd_indexattr list, and replaces it with rd_attrsvalid
flag. The list was not used anywhere, and a simple flag is sufficient.

This was originally committed as 5753d4ee32, but then got reverted by
e3fcca0d0d because of correctness issues.

579ee5df14 Fix memory leak in Memoize cache key evaluation
When probing the Memoize cache to check if the current cache key values
exist in the cache, we perform an evaluation of the expressions making up
the cache key before probing the hash table for those values.  This
operation could leak memory as it is possible that the cache key is an
expression which requires allocation of memory, as was the case in bug
17844.

Here we fix this by correctly switching to the per tuple context before
evaluating the cache expressions so that the memory is freed next time the
per tuple context is reset.

483bdb2afe Support [NO] INDENT option in XMLSERIALIZE().
This adds the ability to pretty-print XML documents ... according to
libxml's somewhat idiosyncratic notions of what's pretty, anyway.
One notable divergence from a strict reading of the spec is that
libxml is willing to collapse empty nodes "<node></node>" to just
"<node/>", whereas SQL and the underlying XML spec say that this
option should only result in whitespace tweaks.  Nonetheless,
it seems close enough to justify using the SQL-standard syntax.

89e46da5e5 Allow the use of indexes other than PK and REPLICA IDENTITY on the subscriber.
Using REPLICA IDENTITY FULL on the publisher can lead to a full table scan
per tuple change on the subscription when REPLICA IDENTITY or PK index is
not available. This makes REPLICA IDENTITY FULL impractical to use apart
from some small number of use cases.

This patch allows using indexes other than PRIMARY KEY or REPLICA
IDENTITY on the subscriber during apply of update/delete. The index that
can be used must be a btree index, not a partial index, and it must have
at least one column reference (i.e. cannot consist of only expressions).
We can uplift these restrictions in the future. There is no smart
mechanism to pick the index. If there is more than one index that
satisfies these requirements, we just pick the first one. We discussed
using some of the optimizer's low-level APIs for this but ruled it out
as that can be a maintenance burden in the long run.

This patch improves the performance in the vast majority of cases and the
improvement is proportional to the amount of data in the table. However,
there could be some regression in a small number of cases where the indexes
have a lot of duplicate and dead rows. It was discussed that those are
mostly impractical cases but we can provide a table or subscription level
option to disable this feature if required.

9321c79c86 Fix concurrent update issues with MERGE.
If MERGE attempts an UPDATE or DELETE on a table with BEFORE ROW
triggers, or a cross-partition UPDATE (with or without triggers), and
a concurrent UPDATE or DELETE happens, the merge code would fail.

In some cases this would lead to a crash, while in others it would
cause the wrong merge action to be executed, or no action at all. The
immediate cause of the crash was the trigger code calling
ExecGetUpdateNewTuple() as part of the EPQ mechanism, which fails
because during a merge ri_projectNew is NULL, since merge has its own
per-action projection information, which ExecGetUpdateNewTuple() knows
nothing about.

Fix by arranging for the trigger code to exit early, returning the
TM_Result and TM_FailureData information, if a concurrent modification
is detected, allowing the merge code to do the necessary EPQ handling
in its own way. Similarly, prevent the cross-partition update code
from doing any EPQ processing for a merge, allowing the merge code to
work out what it needs to do.

This leads to a number of simplifications in nodeModifyTable.c. Most
notably, the ModifyTableContext->GetUpdateNewTuple() callback is no
longer needed, and mergeGetUpdateNewTuple() can be deleted, since
there is no longer any requirement for get-update-new-tuple during a
merge. Similarly, ModifyTableContext->cpUpdateRetrySlot is no longer
needed. Thus ExecGetUpdateNewTuple() and the retry_slot handling of
ExecCrossPartitionUpdate() can be restored to how they were in v14,
before the merge code was added, and ExecMergeMatched() no longer
needs any special-case handling for cross-partition updates.

While at it, tidy up ExecUpdateEpilogue() a bit, making it handle
recheckIndexes locally, rather than passing it in as a parameter,
ensuring that it is freed properly. This dates back to when it was
split off from ExecUpdate() to support merge.

Per bug #17809 from Alexander Lakhin, and follow-up investigation of
bug #17792, also from Alexander Lakhin.

Back-patch to v15, where MERGE was introduced, taking care to preserve
backwards-compatibility of the trigger API in v15 for any extensions
that might use it.

7fee7871b4 Fix some more cases of missed GENERATED-column updates.
If UPDATE is forced to retry after an EvalPlanQual check, it neglected
to repeat GENERATED-column computations, even though those might well
have changed since we're dealing with a different tuple than before.
Fixing this is mostly a matter of looping back a bit further when
we retry.  In v15 and HEAD that's most easily done by altering the API
of ExecUpdateAct so that it includes computing GENERATED expressions.

Also, if an UPDATE in a partitioned table turns into a cross-partition
INSERT operation, we failed to recompute GENERATED columns.  That's a
bug since 8bf6ec3ba allowed partitions to have different generation
expressions; although it seems to have no ill effects before that.
Fixing this is messier because we can now have situations where the same
query needs both the UPDATE-aligned set of GENERATED columns and the
INSERT-aligned set, and it's unclear which set will be generated first
(else we could hack things by forcing the INSERT-aligned set to be
generated, which is indeed how fe9e658f4 made it work for MERGE).
The best fix seems to be to build and store separate sets of expressions
for the INSERT and UPDATE cases.  That would create ABI issues in the
back branches, but so far it seems we can leave this alone in the back
branches.

Per bug #17823 from Hisahiro Kauchi.  The first part of this affects all
branches back to v12 where GENERATED columns were added.

b803b7d132 Fill EState.es_rteperminfos more systematically.
While testing a fix for bug #17823, I discovered that EvalPlanQualStart
failed to copy es_rteperminfos from the parent EState, resulting in
failure if anything in EPQ execution wanted to consult that information.

This led me to conclude that commit a61b1f748 had been too haphazard
about where to fill es_rteperminfos, and that we need to be sure that
that happens exactly where es_range_table gets filled.  So I changed the
signature of ExecInitRangeTable to help ensure that this new requirement
doesn't get missed.  (Indeed, pgoutput.c was also failing to fill it.
Maybe we don't ever need it there, but I wouldn't bet on that.)

No test case yet; one will arrive with the fix for #17823.
But that needs to be back-patched, while this fix is HEAD-only.

141225b251 Mop up some undue familiarity with the innards of Bitmapsets.
nodeAppend.c used non-nullness of appendstate->as_valid_subplans as
a state flag to indicate whether it'd done ExecFindMatchingSubPlans
(or some sufficient approximation to that).  This was pretty
questionable even in the beginning, since it wouldn't really work
right if there are no valid subplans.  It got more questionable
after commit 27e1f1456 added logic that could reduce as_valid_subplans
to an empty set: at that point we were depending on unspecified
behavior of bms_del_members, namely that it'd not return an empty
set as NULL.  It's about to start doing that, which breaks this
logic entirely.  Hence, add a separate boolean flag to signal
whether as_valid_subplans has been computed.

Also fix a previously-cosmetic bug in nodeAgg.c, wherein it ignored
the return value of bms_del_member instead of updating its pointer.

462bb7f128 Remove bms_first_member().
This function has been semi-deprecated ever since we invented
bms_next_member().  Its habit of scribbling on the input bitmapset
isn't great, plus for sufficiently large bitmapsets it would take
O(N^2) time to complete a loop.  Now we have the additional problem
that reducing the input to empty while leaving it still accessible
would violate a planned invariant.  So let's just get rid of it,
after updating the few extant callers to use bms_next_member().

87f3667ec0 Fix MULTIEXPR_SUBLINK with partitioned target tables, yet again.
We already tried to fix this in commits 3f7323cbb et al (and follow-on
fixes), but now it emerges that there are still unfixed cases;
moreover, these cases affect all branches not only pre-v14.  I thought
we had eliminated all cases of making multiple clones of an UPDATE's
target list when we nuked inheritance_planner.  But it turns out we
still do that in some partitioned-UPDATE cases, notably including
INSERT ... ON CONFLICT UPDATE, because ExecInitPartitionInfo thinks
it's okay to clone and modify the parent's targetlist.

This fix is based on a suggestion from Andres Freund: let's stop
abusing the ParamExecData.execPlan mechanism, which was only ever
meant to handle initplans, and instead solve the execution timing
problem by having the expression compiler move MULTIEXPR_SUBLINK steps
to the front of their expression step lists.  This is feasible because
(a) all branches still in support compile the entire targetlist of
an UPDATE into a single ExprState, and (b) we know that all
MULTIEXPR_SUBLINKs do need to be evaluated --- none could be buried
inside a CASE, for example.  There is a minor semantics change
concerning the order of execution of the MULTIEXPR's subquery versus
other parts of the parent targetlist, but that seems like something
we can get away with.  By doing that, we no longer need to worry
about whether different clones of a MULTIEXPR_SUBLINK share output
Params; their usage of that data structure won't overlap.

Per bug #17800 from Alexander Lakhin.  Back-patch to all supported
branches.  In v13 and earlier, we can revert 3f7323cbb and follow-on
fixes; however, I chose to keep the SubPlan.subLinkId field added
in ccbb54c72.  We don't need that anymore in the core code, but it's
cheap enough to fill, and removing a plan node field in a minor
release seems like it'd be asking for trouble.

d0460a31de Add missing support for the latest SPI status codes.
SPI_result_code_string() was missing support for SPI_OK_TD_REGISTER,
and in v15 and later, it was missing support for SPI_OK_MERGE, as was
pltcl_process_SPI_result().

The last of those would trigger an error if a MERGE was executed from
PL/Tcl. The others seem fairly innocuous, but worth fixing.

Back-patch to all supported branches. Before v15, this is just adding
SPI_OK_TD_REGISTER to SPI_result_code_string(), which is unlikely to
be seen by anyone, but seems worth doing for completeness.

0d3b49d4af Fix Assert failure for MERGE into a partitioned table with RLS.
In ExecInitPartitionInfo(), the Assert when building the WITH CHECK
OPTION list for the new partition assumed that the command would be an
INSERT or UPDATE, but it can also be a MERGE. This can be triggered by
a MERGE into a partitioned table with RLS checks to enforce.

Fix, and back-patch to v15, where MERGE was introduced.

80a48e0f21 Fix MERGE command tag for cross-partition updates.
This ensures that the row count in the command tag for a MERGE is
correctly computed. Previously, if MERGE updated a partitioned table,
the row count would be incorrect if any row was moved to a different
partition, since such updates were counted twice.

Back-patch to v15, where MERGE was introduced.

Don't rely on uninitialized value in MERGE / DELETE
On MERGE / WHEN MATCHED DELETE it's not possible to get cross-partition
updates, so we don't initialize cpUpdateRetrySlot; however, the code was
not careful to ignore the value in that case.  Make it do so.

Backpatch to 15.

The logic in this area was recently changed in 7da51590e, however, in that
commit, I neglected to consider that the conditions in which we should
pfree the old Datum needed to be updated after that change.  This could

7da51590ed Fix incorrect presorted DISTINCT aggregate if condition
Here we fix a faulty "if" condition which failed to correctly handle two
or more consecutive NULL transition values when checking if the new value
is DISTINCT from the old value for presorted aggregates.  Given a suitably
non-strict aggregate transition function, a byref aggregate could cause a
crash due to calling the type's equality function and passing along a
(Datum) 0 value to test for equality, the equality function would then try
to dereference that 0 Datum and segfault.  For byval types, there'd have
been no crash and the equality function would have seen that the two 0
Datums matched, which (only by chance) meant the calling code would have
worked correctly.

Here we ensure that we only call the equality function when neither of
the input values are NULL.

This code is all new as of 1349d2790, so no backpatch needed.
