Bruce A. Mah	1b938d0980	In several instances, adjacent, related release notes were combined. A useless entry was removed, as per its comment. Fixed a number of typos and grammos. Old (pre-4.6) security advisories were marked as historic. Hyperlinks were removed from these release notes to work around a buglet in footnote numbering for printed output. These changes eliminated three pages of only marginally-useful utility. Clarify a note on procfs(5) mounts. The games/freebsd-games port now exists, so refer to it when talking about the removal of the traditional BSD games. lukemftpd was deactivated, so remove its release note. John Baldwin	d9d84e0728	Rework the checking out of the doc, src, and ports trees a bit to make it more manageable. - Add some helper variables (CVS_{SRC,DOC,PORTS}ARGS) to be used when using CVS to checkout files. We stick release tags in these helper variables if they are defined and then use only one cvs command instead of two cvs commands with an .ifdef to choose between them. - rm the old src/doc/ports directories as separate commands from the CVS comands so that the rm commands don't need to be duplicated. - Simplify the DOMINIMALDOCPORTS case by overriding RELEASEPORTSMODULE to be ${MINIMALDOCPORTS} thus removing yet another nearly-duplicate cvs command in an .ifdef. - Add support for grabbing src/ and doc/ from external directories specified via EXTSRCDIR and EXTDOCDIR instead of from CVS. The same is not done for ports/ quite yet as the DOMINIMALDOCPORTS case is a bit tricky. CDROM booting instructions are cut-and-pasted from the older sparc64/install.sgml file, which is now unlinked from the document build. This involves moving all networking drivers to floppy 2, all RAID nfsclient && cd9660 to floppy 3 (and adding ispfw). COMPAT_FREEBSD4 had to come back, maxusers is down to 2. AHC is out until somebody can make it a module for alpha. TurboLaser is out because it rarely has a floppy and probably no longer works anyway. There's probably some cleanup that can be done because I was told that things in drivers.conf don't have to be removed via dokern.sh, but because I formally tested the release build with this version and don't want to spend another half day on it, it's going in. Removed the now no-op commands to copy ${RD}/trees/base/dev bits to ${RD}/mfsfd/dev, now that DEVFS is the default. Removed UFS_ACL, PSEUDOFS, and COMPAT_FREEBSD4 options from the BOOTMFS kernel. Moved miibus network module to the drivers floppy. isp(4) and mpt(4) now have corresponding modules, move them to the third floppy as well. Caution! Peter Wemm	66422f5b7a	Initiate deorbit burn for the i386-only a.out related support. Moves are under way to move the remnants of the a.out toolchain to ports. As the comment in src/Makefile said, this stuff is deprecated and one should not expect this to remain beyond 4.0-REL. It has already lasted WAY beyond that. Notable exceptions: gcc - I have not touched the a.out generation stuff there. ldd/ldconfig - still have some code to interface with a.out rtld. old as/ld/etc - I have not removed these yet, pending their move to ports. some includes - necessary for ldd/ldconfig for now. Unfortunately pcn(4) also needs mii(4) so that would also have to added to install kernel, which will bloat it up so that it doesn't fit on the floppy any more. There is a problem however in that pcn(4) was moved out of the install kernel so that the module would be used. Following a suggestion by Ruslan, the initial creation of the includes and libraries (and build tools) is now done by invoking "make buildworld" (with -DPICOBSD which eventually will limit the amount of stuff built with a 2-line change in Makefile.inc1). The correct environment is then used for subsequent builds. Also remove write_mfs_in_kernel.c in favour of using dd All the above is conditional on __FreeBSD_version, as the previous method still worked for versions earlier than 500035, and I am unsure on how the "new" method works for earlier versions. Kirk McKusick	1c85e6a35d	This commit adds basic support for the UFS2 filesystem. The UFS2 filesystem expands the inode to 256 bytes to make space for 64-bit block pointers. It also adds a file-creation time field, an ability to use jumbo blocks per inode to allow extent like pointer density, and space for extended attributes (up to twice the filesystem block size worth of attributes, e.g., on a 16K filesystem, there is space for 32K of attributes). UFS2 fully supports and runs existing UFS1 filesystems. New filesystems built using newfs can be built in either UFS1 or UFS2 format using the -O option. In this commit UFS1 is the default format, so if you want to build UFS2 format filesystems, you must specify -O 2. This default will be changed to UFS2 when UFS2 proves itself to be stable. In this commit the boot code for reading UFS2 filesystems is not compiled (see /sys/boot/common/ufsread.c) as there is insufficient space in the boot block. Once the size of the boot block is increased, this code can be defined. Things to note: the definition of SBSIZE has changed to SBLOCKSIZE. The header file <ufs/ufs/dinode.h> must be included before <ufs/ffs/fs.h> so as to get the definitions of ufs2_daddr_t and ufs_lbn_t. Still TODO: Verify that the first level bootstraps work for all the architectures. Convert the utility ffsinfo to understand UFS2 and test growfs. Add support for the extended attribute storage. Update soft updates to ensure integrity of extended attribute storage. Switch the current extended attribute interfaces to use the extended attribute storage. This commit shouldn't have any immediate effect, but we'll eventually use some stylesheet magic to remove the historic release notes from the output stream. This will have the effect of making the 5.0-RELEASE release notes contain material only relevent to -CURRENT or recently MFC-ed to 4-STABLE. The stylesheet fixes will follow later, once I work out a couple more details. I wanted to get this commit done now, before anything gets MFC-ed in the post-4.6 world (so we don't need to go back later and figure this out). However, if you are not make(1) guy, it is hard to understand that TARGET/TARGET_ARCH are appropriately set in a chroot environment (as environment variables). Now, the only environment variable need to be set explicitly is 'PATH'. If we set PATH in /mk script, we can make pristine sandbox for release build (i.e., "env -i /usr/sbin/chroot ${CHROOT} /mk" will work). Ruslan Ermilov	6bde859f40	Milestone #1 in cross-arch make releases. Do not install games and profiled libraries to the ${CHROOTDIR} with the initial installworld. Eliminate the need in the second installworld. For that, make sure _everything_ is built in the "world" environment, using the right tool chain. Added SUBDIR_OVERRIDE helper stuff to Makefile.inc1. Split the buildworld process into stages, and skip some stages when SUBDIR_OVERRIDE is set (used to build crypto, krb4, and krb5 dists). Added NO_MAKEDB_RUN knob to Makefile.inc1 to avoid running makewhatis(1) at the end of installworld (used when making crypto, krb4, and krb5 dists). In release/scripts/doFS.sh, ensure that the correct boot blocks are used. Moved the creation of the "crypto" dist from release.5 to release.2. In release.3 and doMFSKERN, build kernels in the "world" environment. KERNELS now means "additional" kernels, GENERIC is always built. Ensure we build crunched binaries in the "world" environment. Obfuscate release/Makefile some more (WMAKEENV) to achieve this. Inline createBOOTMFS target. Use already built GENERIC kernel modules to augment mfsfd's /stand/modules. GC doMODULES as such. Assorted fixes: Get rid of the "afterdistribute" target by moving the single use of it from sys/Makefile to etc/Makefile's "distribute". Makefile.inc1: apparently "etc" no longer needs to be last for "distribute" to succeed. gnu/usr.bin/perl/library/Makefile.inc: do not override the "install" and "distribute" targets, do it the "canonical" way. release/scripts/{man,cat}pages-make.sh: make sure Perl manpages and catpages appear in the right dists. Note that because Perl does not respect the MANBUILDCAT (and NOMAN), this results in a loss of /usr/share/perl/man/cat* empty directories. This will be fixed soon. Turn MAKE_KERBEROS4 into a plain boolean variable (if it is set it means "make KerberosIV"), as documented in the make.conf(5) manpage. Most of the userland makefiles did not test it for "YES" anyway. XXX Should specialized kerberized libpam versions be included into the krb4 and krb5 dists? (libpam.a would be incorrect anyway if both krb4 and krb5 dists were choosen.) Make sure "games" dist is made before "catpages", otherwise games catpages settle in the wrong dist. (for the last resort, fixit.flp still has /dev/MAKEDEV.) - increase FIXITINODE size to 10 times (40000). After this change, we have 42kbytes of free space, and 38 of free inodes (confirmed with 5.0-CURRENT-20020327-JPSNAP). The structure is now the following: * /etc/rc (from MFS) loads the rest of /etc and /root from /fd and then from floppy (if present), then transfers control to /etc/rc1 * /etc/rc1 loads defaults from /etc/rc.conf.defaults, tries to set the hostname basing on the MAC address of the first ethernet interface, and then sources /etc/rc.conf and /etc/rc.conf.local for local configurations * The rest of the startup process is then performed (rc.network and so on). Everything except the initial /etc/rc (from MFS) can be overridden with a local version loaded from floppy. But in most cases, you should only need to customize the following files in /etc: rc.conf rc.firewall hosts Previously there were a number of inconsistencies in the calling between files, and also a lot of clutter in rc.conf and rc.firewall. Remove some somewhat-lacking-in content release notes: PCI subsystem cleanup, netgraph(4) updates. Then if RELEASEDISTFILES is defined, ${CHROOTDIR}/usr/ports/distfiles directory is created by cp(1). However, if you don't specify RELEASEDISTFILES, there is no chance to create ${CHROOTDIR}/usr/ports/distfiles directory. Makoto Matsushita	40227c902b	Change variable name from DOCDISTFILES to RELEASEDISTFILES. Respect DOCDISTFILES if defined. No impact should happen with this change. DOCDISTFILES is introduced by rev. 1.541, to point the directory that contains the distfiles for ports/textproc/docproj. It's good, but we also build ports/sysutils/mkisofs during the release (if MAKE_ISOS is defined). It is natural that cdrtools tarball is prefetched, then copy it under ${CHROOTDIR}/usr/ports/distfiles. As a result, DOCDISTFILES variable is somewhat abused for non-doc tarballs; DOCDISTFILES is no longger appropriate name for that. Makoto Matsushita	65718a83c9	In revision 1.351, All files/directories in ${CHROOTDIR}/usr/ports/distfiles are removed, because ports.tgz includes distfiles by accident. However, removing files/directories is not mandatory. The only requirement is "ports.tgz doesn't include distfiles/* but distfiles directory itself". If this is correct, the right way is to set an option to tar(1), not to include these files. This commit is based on PR: 34194, but a little bit of modification is made by me (original patch doesn't include 'distfiles' directory).
