44ebbb8458 Fix missing histogram copy in sampleRing
The specialized version of sample add to the ring:
func addH(s hSample, buf []hSample, r *sampleRing) []hSample
func addFH(s fhSample, buf []fhSample, r *sampleRing) []fhSample
already correctly copy histogram samples from the reused hReader, fhReader
buffers, but the generic version does not. This means that the
data is overwritten on the next read if the sample ring has seen histogram
and float samples at the same time and switched to generic mode.

The `genericAdd` function (which was commented anyway) is by now quite
different from the specialized functions so that this commit deletes
it.

0f760f63dd lint: Revamp our linting rules, mostly around doc comments
Several things done here:

- Set `max-issues-per-linter` to 0 so that we actually see all linter
warnings and not just 50 per linter. (As we also set
`max-same-issues` to 0, I assume this was the intention from the
  beginning.)

- Stop using the golangci-lint default excludes (by setting
`exclude-use-default: false`. Those are too generous and don't match
our style conventions. (I have re-added some of the excludes
explicitly in this commit. See below.)

- Re-add the `errcheck` exclusion we have used so far via the
  defaults.

- Exclude the signature requirement `govet` has for `Seek` methods
because we use non-standard `Seek` methods a lot. (But we keep other
requirements, while the default excludes completely disabled the
  check for common method segnatures.)

- Exclude warnings about missing doc comments on exported symbols. (We
used to be pretty adamant about doc comments, but stopped that at
some point in the past. By now, we have about 500 missing doc
comments. We may consider reintroducing this check, but that's
outside of the scope of this commit. The default excludes of
golangci-lint essentially ignore doc comments completely.)

- By stop using the default excludes, we now get warnings back on
malformed doc comments. That's the most impactful change in this
commit. It does not enforce doc comments (again), but _if_ there is
a doc comment, it has to have the recommended form. (Most of the
changes in this commit are fixing this form.)

- Improve wording/spelling of some comments in .golangci.yml, and
  remove an outdated comment.

- Leave `package-comments` inactive, but add a TODO asking if we
  should change that.

- Add a new sub-linter `comment-spacings` (and fix corresponding
comments), which avoids missing spaces after the leading `//`.

Native histograms: fix spurios counter reset when merging recoded chunk to normal chunk (#14513)
* chunkenc: allow missing empty buckets on histogram append

Allow appending to chunks when the histogram to be added is missing
some buckets, but the missing buckets are empty in the chunk.
For example bucket at index 5 is present in the chunk, but its value
is 0 and the new histogram doesn't have a bucket at index 5.

This fixes an issue of merging chunks where one chunk was recoded to
retroactively have some empty buckets in all the histograms and we are
merging in a histogram that doesn't have the empty bucket (because it
was not recoded yet).

The operation alters the histogram that is being added, however this has
already been the case when appending gauge histograms. Thus the test
TestHistogramSeriesToChunks in storage package is changed to explicitly
test what happened to the appended histogram - Compact(0) call is removed.

The new expandIntSpansAndBuckets and expandFloatSpansAndBuckets functions
are a merge of expandSpansForward and counterResetInAnyBucket and
counterResetInAnyFloatBucket.

Per the iostat man page:

%idle
Show the percentage of time that the CPU or CPUs were idle and the
system did not have an outstanding disk I/O request.

%iowait
Show the percentage of time that the CPU or CPUs were idle during
which the system had an outstanding disk I/O request.

%steal
Show the percentage of time spent in involuntary wait by the
virtual CPU or CPUs while the hypervisor was servicing another

Calling `*armnetwork.InterfacesClient.Get()` doesn't work for Scale Set
VM NIC, because these use a different Resource ID format.

Use `*armnetwork.InterfacesClient.GetVirtualMachineScaleSetNetworkInterface()`
instead. This needs both the scale set name and the instance ID, so
add an `InstanceID` field to the `virtualMachine` struct. `InstanceID`
is empty for a VM that isn't a ScaleSetVM.

* fix(discovery): allow requireUpdate util to timeout in discovery/file/file_test.go.

The loop ran indefinitely if the condition isn't met.

Before, each iteration created a new timer channel which was always outpaced by
the other timer channel with smaller duration.

minor detail: There was a memory leak: resources of the ~10 previous timers were
constantly kept. With the fix, we may keep the resources of one timer around for defaultWait
but this isn't worth the changes to make it right.

* storage: skip merging when no remote storage configured

Prometheus is hard-coded to use a fanout storage between TSDB and
a remote storage which by default is empty.
This change detects the empty storage and skips merging between
result sets, which would make `Select()` sort results.

Bottom line: we skip a sort unless there really is some remote storage
configured.

* Optimize histogram iterators (#13340)

Optimize histogram iterators

Histogram iterators allocate new objects in the AtHistogram and
AtFloatHistogram methods, which makes calculating rates over long
ranges expensive.

In #13215 we allowed an existing object to be reused
when converting an integer histogram to a float histogram. This commit follows
the same idea and allows injecting an existing object in the AtHistogram and
AtFloatHistogram methods. When the injected value is nil, iterators allocate
new histograms, otherwise they populate and return the injected object.

The commit also adds a CopyTo method to Histogram and FloatHistogram which
is used in the BufferedIterator to overwrite items in the ring instead of making
new copies.

Note that a specialized HPoint pool is needed for all of this to work
(`matrixSelectorHPool`).

* Labels: Add DropMetricName function, used in PromQL (#13446)

This function is called very frequently when executing PromQL functions,
and we can do it much more efficiently inside Labels.

In the common case that `__name__` comes first in the labels, we simply
re-point to start at the next label, which is nearly free.

`DropMetricName` is now so cheap I removed the cache - benchmarks show
everything still goes faster.

* Name @beorn7 and @krajorama as maintainers for native histograms

I have been the de-facto maintainer for native histograms from the
beginning. So let's put this into MAINTAINERS.md.

In addition, I hereby proposose George Krajcsovits AKA Krajo as a
co-maintainer. He has contributed a lot of native histogram code, but
more importantly, he has contributed substantially to reviewing other
contributors' native histogram code, up to a point where I was merely
rubberstamping the PRs he had already reviewed. I'm confident that he
is ready to to be granted commit rights as outlined in the
"Maintainers" section of the governance:
https://prometheus.io/governance/#maintainers

According to the same section of the governance, I will announce the
proposed change on the developers mailing list and will give some time
for lazy consensus before merging this PR.

Mutex is 8 bytes; RWMutex is 24 bytes and much more complicated. Since

* Fix last_over_time for native histograms

The last_over_time retains a histogram sample without making a copy.
This sample is now coming from the buffered iterator used for windowing functions,
and can be reused for reading subsequent samples as the iterator progresses.

I would propose copying the sample in the last_over_time function, similar to
how it is done for rate, sum_over_time and others.

* Add ShardedPostings() support to TSDB (#10421)

This PR is a reference implementation of the proposal described in #10420.

In addition to what described in #10420, in this PR I've introduced labels.StableHash(). The idea is to offer an hashing function which doesn't change over time, and that's used by query sharding in order to get a stable behaviour over time. The implementation of labels.StableHash() is the hashing function used by Prometheus before stringlabels, and what's used by Grafana Mimir for query sharding (because built before stringlabels was a thing).

Follow up work
As mentioned in #10420, if this PR is accepted I'm also open to upload another foundamental piece used by Grafana Mimir query sharding to accelerate the query execution: an optional, configurable and fast in-memory cache for the series hashes.

fc34570b06 prometheusremotewrite: Move TimeSeries method to timeseries.go
To facilitate generating OTel translation code for other Prometheus
compatible backends, modify the prometheusremotewrite sources slightly
so that the PrometheusConverter.TimeSeries method is in a file called
timeseries.go. The rationale is to allow other backends to define their
own implementation of this method.

otlp: Prometheus to own its own copy of the otlptranslator package (#13991)
After a lot of productive discussion between the Prometheus and
OpenTelemetry community we decided that it made sense for Prometheus to
own its own copy of the code in charge for handling OTLP ingestion
traffic.

This commit is removing the README and update-copy.sh files that had the
previous steps to update the code.

Also it is updating the licensing of all the files to make sure the
OpenTelemetry provenance is explicit and to state the new ownership.

storage/remote: disable resharding during active retry backoffs (#13562)
* storage/remote: disable resharding during active retry backoffs

Today, remote_write reshards based on pure throughput. This is
problematic if throughput has been diminished because of HTTP 429s;
increasing the number of shards due to backpressure will only exacerbate
the problem.

This commit disables resharding for twice the retry backoff, ensuring
that resharding will never occur during an active backoff, and that
resharding does not become enabled again until enough time has elapsed
to allow any pending requests to be retried.

This change introduces a second atomic int64 to roughly track when

disabled timestamp if resharding was previously enabled.

Add ShardedPostings() support to TSDB (#10421)

Optimize histogram iterators (#13340)

Change ChunkReader.Chunk() to ChunkOrIterable()
The ChunkReader interface's Chunk() has been changed to ChunkOrIterable().

This is a precursor to OOO native histogram support - with OOO native histograms, the chunks.Meta passed to Chunk() can result in multiple chunks being returned rather than just a single chunk (e.g. if oooMergedChunk has a counter reset in the middle).

To support this, ChunkOrIterable() requires either a single chunk or an iterable to be returned. If an iterable is returned, the caller has the responsibility of converting the samples from the iterable into possibly multiple chunks. The OOOHeadChunkReader now returns an iterable rather than a chunk to prepare for the native histograms case. Also as a beneficial side effect, oooMergedChunk and boundedChunk has been simplified as they only need to implement the Iterable interface now, not the full Chunk interface.

4696b46dd5 storage: Fix mixed samples handling in sampleRing
Two issues are fixed here, that lead to the same problem:

1. If `newSampleRing` is called with an unknown ValueType including
ValueNone, we have initialized the interface buffer (`iBuf`).
However, we would still use a specialized buffer for the first
sample, opportunistically assuming that we might still not
encounter mixed samples and we should go down the more efficient
   road.

2. If the `sampleRing` is `reset`, we leave all buffers alone,
including `iBuf`, which is generally fine, but not for `iBuf`, see
   below.

In both cases, `iBuf` already contains values, but we will fill one of
the specialized buffers first. Once we then actually encounter mixed
samples, the content of the specialized buffer is copied into `iBuf`
using `append`. That's by itself the right idea because `iBuf` might
be `nil`, and even if not, it might or might not have the right
capacity. However, this approach assumes that `iBuf` is empty, or more
precisely has a length of zero.

This commit makes sure that `iBuf` does not get needlessly initialized
in `newSampleRing` and that it is emptied upon `reset`.

A test case is added to demonstrate both issues above.

Add warnings (and annotations) to PromQL query results (#12152)
Return annotations (warnings and infos) from PromQL queries

This generalizes the warnings we have already used before (but only for problems with remote read) as "annotations".

Annotations can be warnings or infos (the latter could be false positives). We do not treat them different in the API for now and return them all as "warnings". It would be easy to distinguish them and return infos separately, should that appear useful in the future.

The new annotations are then used to create a lot of warnings or infos during PromQL evaluations. Partially these are things we have wanted for a long time (e.g. inform the user that they have applied `rate` to a metric that doesn't look like a counter), but the new native histograms have created even more needs for those annotations (e.g. if a query tries to aggregate float numbers with histograms).

The annotations added here are not yet complete. A prominent example would be a warning about a range too short for a rate calculation. But such a warnings is more tricky to create with good fidelity and we will tackle it later.

Another TODO is to take annotations into account when evaluating recording rules.

Add a chunk size limit in bytes (#12054)
Add a chunk size limit in bytes

This creates a hard cap for XOR chunks of 1024 bytes.

The limit for histogram chunk is also 1024 bytes, but it is a soft limit as a histogram has a dynamic size, and even a single one could be larger than 1024 bytes.

This also avoids cutting new histogram chunks if the existing chunk has fewer than 10 histograms yet. In that way, we are accepting "jumbo chunks" in order to have at least 10 histograms in a chunk, allowing compression to kick in.

aa82fe198f tsdb: Fix histogram validation
So far, `ValidateHistogram` would not detect if the count did not
include the count in the zero bucket. This commit fixes the problem
and updates all the tests that have been undetected offenders so far.

Note that this problem would only ever create false negatives, so we
never falsely rejected to store a histogram because of it.

On the other hand, `ValidateFloatHistogram` has been to strict with
the count being at least as large as the sum of the counts in all the
buckets. Float precision issues could create false positives here, see
products of PromQL evaluations, it's actually quite hard to put an
upper limit no the floating point imprecision. Users could produce the
weirdest expressions, maxing out float precision problems. Therefore,
this commit simply removes that particular check from
`ValidateFloatHistogram`.

Fix encoding samples in ChunkSeries (#12185)
The storage.ChunkSeries iterator assumes that a histogram sample can always be
appended to the currently open chunk. This is not the case when there is a counter reset,
or when appending a stale sample to a chunk with non-stale samples. In addition, the open chunk sometimes
needs to be recoded before a sample can be appended.

This commit addresses the issue by implementing a RecodingAppender which can recode incoming
samples in a transparent way. It also detects cases when a sample cannot be appended at all and
returns `false` so that the caller can open a new chunk.

5b53aa1108 style: Replace else if cascades with switch
Wiser coders than myself have come to the conclusion that a `switch`
statement is almost always superior to a statement that includes any
`else if`.

The exceptions that I have found in our codebase are just these two:

* The `if else` is followed by an additional statement before the next
  condition (separated by a `;`).
* The whole thing is within a `for` loop and `break` statements are
used. In this case, using `switch` would require tagging the `for`
loop, which probably tips the balance.

Why are `switch` statements more readable?

For one, fewer curly braces. But more importantly, the conditions all
have the same alignment, so the whole thing follows the natural flow
of going down a list of conditions. With `else if`, in contrast, all
conditions but the first are "hidden" behind `} else if `, harder to
spot and (for no good reason) presented differently from the first
condition.

I'm sure the aforemention wise coders can list even more reasons.

In any case, I like it so much that I have found myself recommending
it in code reviews. I would like to make it a habit in our code base,
without making it a hard requirement that we would test on the CI. But
for that, there has to be a role model, so this commit eliminates all
`if else` occurrences, unless it is autogenerated code or fits one of
the exceptions above.

c3c7d44d84 lint: Adjust to the lint warnings raised by current versions of golint-ci
We haven't updated golint-ci in our CI yet, but this commit prepares
for that.

There are a lot of new warnings, and it is mostly because the "revive"
linter got updated. I agree with most of the new warnings, mostly
around not naming unused function parameters (although it is justified
in some cases for documentation purposes – while things like mocks are
a good example where not naming the parameter is clearer).

I'm pretty upset about the "empty block" warning to include `for`
loops. It's such a common pattern to do something in the head of the
`for` loop and then have an empty block. There is still an open issue
about this: https://github.com/mgechev/revive/issues/810 I have
disabled "revive" altogether in files where empty blocks are used
excessively, and I have made the effort to add individual
`// nolint:revive` where empty blocks are used just once or twice.
It's borderline noisy, though, but let's go with it for now.

I should mention that none of the "empty block" warnings for `for`
loop bodies were legitimate.

817a2396cb Name float values as "floats", not as "values"
In the past, every sample value was a float, so it was fine to call a
variable holding such a float "value" or "sample". With native
histograms, a sample might have a histogram value. And a histogram
value is still a value. Calling a float value just "value" or "sample"
or "V" is therefore misleading. Over the last few commits, I already
renamed many variables, but this cleans up a few more places where the
changes are more invasive.

Note that we do not to attempt naming in the JSON APIs or in the
protobufs. That would be quite a disruption. However, internally, we
can call variables as we want, and we should go with the option of
avoiding misunderstandings.

This utilizes the fact that most sampleRings will only contain samples

630bcb494b storage: Use separate sample types for histogram vs. float
Previously, we had one “polymorphous” `sample` type in the `storage`

`fhSample`, each still implementing the `tsdbutil.Sample` interface.

This reduces allocations in `sampleRing.Add` but inflicts the penalty
of the interface wrapper, which makes things worse in total.

This commit therefore just demonstrates the step taken. The next
commit will tackle the interface overhead problem.

b987afa7ef labels: simplify call to get Labels from Builder
It took a `Labels` where the memory could be re-used, but in practice
this hardly ever benefitted. Especially after converting `relabel.Process`
to `relabel.ProcessBuilder`.

Comparing the parameter to `nil` was a bug; `EmptyLabels` is not `nil`
so the slice was reallocated multiple times by `append`.

Lastly `Builder.Labels()` now estimates that the final size will depend
on labels added and deleted.

remote.Client: store urlString
During remote write, we call url.String() twice:
- to add the Endpoint() to the span
- to actually know where whe should send the request

This value does not change over time, and it's not really that
lightweight to calculate. I wrote this simple benchmark:

    func BenchmarkURLString(b *testing.B) {
        u, err := url.Parse("https://remote.write.com/api/v1")
        require.NoError(b, err)

        b.Run("string", func(b *testing.B) {
            count := 0
            for i := 0; i < b.N; i++ {
                count += len(u.String())
            }
        })
    }

And the results are ~200ns/op, 80B/op, 3 allocs/op.

Yes, we're going to go to the network here, which is a huge amount of
resources compared to this, but still, on agents that send 500 requests
per second, that is 1500 wasteful allocations per second.

Mark Histogram.(Positive|Negative)Spans as non-nullable.
As far as I understand it, we'd never expect to receive a nil span,
and remote.spansProtoToSpans would panic if we received a nil span.

Marking the fields as non-nullable also means the generated Golang
code doesn't use pointers for these fields, reducing allocations.

1cfc8f65a3 histograms: Return actually useful counter reset hints
This is a bit more conservative than we could be. As long as a chunk
isn't the first in a block, we can be pretty sure that the previous
chunk won't disappear. However, the incremental gain of returning
NotCounterReset in these cases is probably very small and might not be
worth the code complications.

Wwith this, we now also pay attention to an explicitly set counter
reset during ingestion. While the case doesn't show up in practice
yet, there could be scenarios where the metric source knows there was
a counter reset even if it might not be visible from the values in the
histogram. It is also useful for testing.

Attempt to append ooo sample at the end first (#11615)
This is an optimization on the existing append in OOOChunk.

What we've been doing so far is find the place inside the out-of-order
slice where the new sample should go in and then place it there and move
any samples to the right if necessary. This is OK but requires a binary
search every time the slice is bigger than 0.

The optimization is opinionated and suggests that although out-of-order
samples can be out-of-order amongst themselves they'll probably be in
order thus we can probably optimistically append at the end and if not
do the binary search.

OOOChunks are capped to 30 samples by default so this is a small
optimization but everything adds up, specially if you handle many active
timeseries with out-of-order samples.

In most cases, there is no sample at `maxt`, so `PeekBack` has to be
used. So far, `PeekBack` did not return a float histogram, and we

also tweaks the unit test to discover the problem (by using an earlier

abd9909595 Update package storage/remote for new labels.Labels type
`QueueManager.externalLabels` becomes a slice rather than a `Labels` so
we can index into it when doing the merge operation.

Note we avoid calling `Labels.Len()` in `labelProtosToLabels()`.
It isn't necessary - `append()` will enlarge the buffer and we're
expecting to re-use it many times.

Also, we now validate protobuf input before converting to Labels.
This way we can detect errors first, and we don't place unnecessary
requirements on the Labels structure.

Re-do seriesFilter using labels.Builder (albeit N^2).

* Correct key used to retrieve metadata from cache

When we're setting metadata entries in the scrapeCace, we're using the
p.Help(), p.Unit(), p.Type() helpers, which retrieve the series name and
use it as the cache key. When checking for cache entries though, we used
p.Series() as the key, which included the metric name _with_ its labels.
That meant that we were never actually hitting the cache. We're fixing
this by utiling the __name__ internal label for correctly getting the
cache entries after they've been set by setHelp(), setType() or
setUnit().

87351f2318 prompb: Modify layout of histograms
Note: This is deliberately an incompatible change. Since we have never
used histograms in remote read/write yet, there is no point in keeping
compatibility. This _is_, however, compatible to the state in the main
branch.

This commit flattens the bucket message into top-level fields. This
has the disadvantage of now having two triples of fields prefixed with
`negative_...` or `positive_...`. However, with this structure, we
save one tag on the wire. And, perhaps more importantly, we mirror the
structure of the `histogram.Histogram` Go type.

This commit also adjusts `repeated` fields to use names in the plural
form, as it is also the case for the fields that already existed.

This also adds a doc comment to `HistogramProtoToHistogram` and
changes its return type to a pointer (which is more convenient and
probably more efficient).

Fix deadlock between adding to queue and getting batch
Do not block when trying to write a batch to the queue. This can cause
appends to lock forever if the only thing reading from the queue needs
the mutex to write. Instead, if batchQueue is full pop the sample that
was just added from the partial batch and return false. The code doing
the appending already handles retries with backoff.

Fix deadlock when stopping a shard (#10279)
If a queue is stopped and one of its shards happens to hit the
batch_send_deadline at the same time a deadlock can occur where stop
holds the mutex and will not release it until the send is finished, but
the send needs the mutex to retrieve the most recent batch. This is
fixed by using a second mutex just for writing.

In addition, the test I wrote exposed a case where during shutdown a
batch could be sent twice due to concurrent calls to queue.Batch() and
queue.FlushAndShutdown(). Protect these with a mutex as well.

Update sent timestamp when write irrecoverably fails.
We have an alert that fires when prometheus_remote_storage_highest_timestamp_in_seconds - prometheus_remote_storage_queue_highest_sent_timestamp_seconds
becomes too high. But we have an agent that fires this when the remote "rate-limits" the user.

This is because prometheus_remote_storage_queue_highest_sent_timestamp_seconds doesn't get updated
when the remote sends a 429.

I think we should update the metrics, and the change I made makes sense. Because if the requests fails
because of connectivity issues, etc. we will never exit the `sendWriteRequestWithBackoff` function. It only
exits the function when there is a non-recoverable error, like a bad status code, and in that case, I think
the metric needs to be updated.

50878ebe5e remote-write: buffer struct instead of interface
This reduces the amount of individual objects allocated, allowing sends
to run a bit faster.

c478d6477a remote-write: benchmark just sending, on 20 shards
Previously BenchmarkSampleDelivery spent a lot of effort checking each
sample had arrived, so was largely showing the performance of test-only
code.

Increase the number of shards to be more realistic for a large
workload.

Subtract from enqueued samples/exemplars upon send
Right now the values for enqueuedSamples and enqueuedExemplars is never
subtracted leading to inflated values for failedSamples/failedExemplars
when a hard shutdown of a shard occurs.

Batch samples before sending them to channels
Channels can cause bottlenecks and tons of context switches when reading
hundreds of thousands of samples per second from a single queue.
Instead, pre-batch the samples to amortize the cost of the concurrency
overhead.
