* rebased all prev commits into one (see commit desc)

add UsePreferredUsername support to gitlab; tests

resort en.json

update an out of date comment

webapp i18n

simplify username logic

new arguments needed in tests

debug statements -- revert

* merge conflicts

* fix i18n
