With the parent-centric resolver, dns_view_bestzonecut() consults the
delegation DB (view->deleg) rather than the main cache for the closest
zonecut. Root is never the target of a referral, so it never lands in
delegdb; bestzonecut therefore falls through to the hints lookup on
every query whose closest ancestor is root. prime_done() only called
dns_root_checkhints(), which logs discrepancies but does not update
any store bestzonecut looks at, so the fresh root NS records obtained
by priming were never used and priming kept re-firing.
Rename view->hints to view->rootdb and refresh it when a priming
fetch completes: the '.' NS rdataset is replaced with the fetched
one, and for each listed nameserver the matching A/AAAA glue is
copied from the response's ADDITIONAL section. Only glue for names
that actually appear as NS targets is accepted, so a hostile response
cannot inject unrelated records. Glue the response did not carry is
left untouched, so the hints-file records loaded at startup remain as
a fallback.
Each view gets its own rootdb: the previous shared
named_g_server->in_roothints is gone, and configure_view() calls
dns_rootns_create() per view when the class-IN defaults are needed.
That keeps the priming writer one-per-DB, so concurrent priming in
different views cannot race on the same zone-DB version.
The rootdb refresh runs synchronously from the resolver response path,
so records go straight from the wire into rootdb with no cache round
trip and no dependency on DNSSEC validation state. A new
DNS_FETCHOPT_PRIMING option marks the priming fetch; prime_done()
itself is now pure cleanup.
Track the rootdb freshness window in view->rootdb_expires and trigger
re-priming lazily from dns_view_find() and bestzonecut_rootdb() only
when the window has elapsed. Stale records are still served while the
fresh priming fetch is in flight.
Drop dns_root_checkhints() and its helpers; the rootdb is now the
authoritative source the resolver consults.

All databases in the codebase follow the same structure: a database is
an associative container from DNS names to nodes, and each node is an
associative container from RR types to RR data.
Each database implementation (qpzone, qpcache, sdlz, builtin, dyndb) has
its own corresponding node type (qpznode, qpcnode, etc). However, some
code needs to work with nodes generically regardless of their specific
type - for example, to acquire locks, manage references, or
register/unregister slabs from the heap.
Currently, these generic node operations are implemented as methods in
the database vtable, which creates problematic coupling between database
and node lifetimes. If a node outlives its parent database, the node
destructor will destroy all RR data, and each RR data destructor will
try to unregister from heaps by calling a virtual function from the
database vtable. Since the database was already freed, this causes a
crash.
This commit breaks the coupling by standardizing the layout of all
database nodes, adding a dedicated vtable for node operations, and
moving node-specific methods from the database vtable to the node
vtable.
replace the pattern `for (result = dns_rdataset_first(x); result ==
ISC_R_SUCCES; result = dns_rdataset_next(x)` with a new
`DNS_RDATASET_FOREACH` macro throughout BIND.
The offsets were meant to speed-up the repeated dns_name operations, but
it was experimentally proven that there's actually no real-world
benefit. Remove the offsets and labels fields from the dns_name and the
static offsets fields to save 128 bytes from the fixedname in favor of
calculating labels and offsets only when needed.
Remove the complicated mechanism that could be (in theory) used by
external libraries to register new categories and modules with
statically defined lists in <isc/log.h>. This is similar to what we
have done for <isc/result.h> result codes. All the libraries are now
internal to BIND 9, so we don't need to provide a mechanism to register
extra categories and modules.
by default, QPDB is the database used by named and all tools and
unit tests. the old default of RBTDB can now be restored by using
"configure --with-zonedb=rbt --with-cachedb=rbt".
some tests have been fixed so they will work correctly with either
database.
CHANGES and release notes have been updated to reflect this change.
replace the string "rbt" throughout BIND with "qp" so that
qpdb databases will be used by default instead of rbtdb.
rbtdb databases can still be used by specifying "database rbt;"
in a zone statement.
To reduce the amount of log spam when root servers change their
addresses keep a table of upcoming changes by expected date and time
and suppress reporting differences for them until then.
Add initial entry for B.ROOT-SERVERS.NET, Nov 27, 2023.
This is a simple replacement using the semantic patch from the previous
commit and as added bonus, one removal of previously undetected unused
variable in named/server.c.
Gcc 7+ and Clang 10+ have implemented __attribute__((fallthrough)) which
is explicit version of the /* FALLTHROUGH */ comment we are currently
using.
Add and apply FALLTHROUGH macro that uses the attribute if available,
but does nothing on older compilers.
In one case (lib/dns/zone.c), using the macro revealed that we were
using the /* FALLTHROUGH */ comment in wrong place, remove that comment.
This commit converts the license handling to adhere to the REUSE
specification. It specifically:
1. Adds used licnses to LICENSES/ directory
2. Add "isc" template for adding the copyright boilerplate
3. Changes all source files to include copyright and SPDX license
header, this includes all the C sources, documentation, zone files,
configuration files. There are notes in the doc/dev/copyrights file
on how to add correct headers to the new files.
4. Handle the rest that can't be modified via .reuse/dep5 file. The
binary (or otherwise unmodifiable) files could have license places
next to them in <foo>.license file, but this would lead to cluttered
repository and most of the files handled in the .reuse/dep5 file are
system test files.
Remove the dynamic registration of result codes. Convert isc_result_t
from unsigned + #defines into 32-bit enum type in grand unified
<isc/result.h> header. Keep the existing values of the result codes
even at the expense of the description and identifier tables being
unnecessary large.
Additionally, add couple of:
switch (result) {
[...]
default:
break;
}
statements where compiler now complains about missing enum values in the
switch statement.
this corrects some style glitches such as:
```
long_function_call(arg, arg2, arg3, arg4, arg5, "str"
"ing");
```
...by adjusting the penalties for breaking strings and call
parameter lists.
Replace dns_fixedname_init() calls followed by dns_fixedname_name()
calls with calls to dns_fixedname_initname() where it is possible
without affecting current behavior and/or performance.
This patch was mostly prepared using Coccinelle and the following
semantic patch:
@@
expression fixedname, name;
@@
- dns_fixedname_init(&fixedname);
...
- name = dns_fixedname_name(&fixedname);
+ name = dns_fixedname_initname(&fixedname);
The resulting set of changes was then manually reviewed to exclude false
positives and apply minor tweaks.
It is likely that more occurrences of this pattern can be refactored in
an identical way. This commit only takes care of the low-hanging fruit.
